- Universal, on 10/12/2007, -10/+200Spoiler: Gmail wins.
Again. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -18/+91Yeah Gmail is a bitch for those people who don't care about ease of use and convenience.
- Borfo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+67ok but what does Ron Paul think about all this!!?!? why the hell doesn't the article even mention that he's running for chrissakes!
- NICU, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40I use Hotmail and Gmail, the only thing I don't like about Gmail is the lack of folders, but with filters and labels its actually more useful after getting used to it. The search in Hotmail sucks horribly compared to Gmail. The Hotmail interface looks a little nicer, but works very poorly in Firefox so Gmail has been taking over for me lately.
- SebHughes, on 10/12/2007, -8/+38IMO Gmail pwns Windows Live anyday. Gmail loads quicker and has better funtionality and runs smoothly and it also has built in googletalk, the layout is clean and simple and enjoyable to use, with Live it seems laggy and theres not much funky AJAX in it and its just meh. Gmail FTW.
- AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Gmail: 5 (Interface, Storage, Organization, Chat Integration, Advertising)
Live Hotmail: 3 (Integrated Calendar, Personalization, Mobile)
Tie: 1 (POP3 Account Access)
TBD: 1 (Search)
Neither: 1 (RSS Reader) - grooviekenn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23RRS Reader - Gmail wins if you've installed BetterGmail Firefox extension :)
- doublsh0t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19unlimited + 1 storage, you mean
- daven1986, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23cos yahoo mail is *****
- axxxul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19it's just a link to Google Calendar, which isn't theorically a part of GMail
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Its gmail hands down for me, simply because its supports POP3 so I can use it in whatever email program I want.
Hotmail on the other hand has been needlessly crippled by MS so you can ONLY access it via your web browser so they can display more advertising!
Why the hell did they remove this feature?!?!
Till MS re-enable POP3 capability they come in a distant 2nd place!
Hotmail still seems faster though. - DesiGUY, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23why shame? I disagree.
whats wrong in borrowing/copying something that is good and improvising?
still, Google kicks M$ ass.
--Google Whore - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17"Live.com is basicially a google clone"
What? That makes no sense whatsoever. I use and like both, but the two couldn't possibly be more different in their implementation. When the hell did it become so trendy to accuse any product you don't like of being a copy, regardless of whether there's any truth to it? - sickswaystop, on 10/12/2007, -16/+29well since Live.com is basicially a google clone with some tweaks I shame them.
long live Gmail and our unlimited storage. - Ratatosk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16live mail is a pathetic approach. I think it's so funny that a 100 man strong team can't make an ajax client fast enough to be used... thus they had to slim it down to this (it's worse than gmail anyways).
fun fact: 33% of hotmail users apparantly have dial-up. wow - lancert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I used to respect Digg users overall but the flagrant fanboy/girl stuff is just juvenile. We know, we know, you hate Microsoft, but c'mon, can't a product stand on its own merits without people Digging down anyone who doesn't like what they like??
I tried Hotmail Live and it's OK. It's MILES better than the previous untouched 7 year old version. I still prefer Gmail but who knows, I might actually use both... - m4rs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10no forwarding with Hotmail....gmail of course wins..why waste time comparing
- ilovethissite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Gmail, no doubt.
I did notice yesterday that my MSN account was now at 1GB, after being at a measly 2MB for the longest. I remember signing up for MSN internet back '00 and they increased my email storage to 20MB but soon as I canceled it, it was back down to 2MB, and if you go a month without using the account, they will reset it, and clear all of your e-mails. : |
Google is like at 3GB now, and lets you keep everything forever, so Microsoft has a lot of catching up to do if it ever hopes to reach Gmail. - mixartdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"You can't even access Hotmail via POP"
- It's the other way around - accessing POP accounts FROM hotmail. - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15@Scyth3:
just because you don't use the chat features doesn't mean they're not features. they're included in both web mail clients and many users do use them, so why isn't it fair to compare them? you can ignore that area of comparison when you decide which one you like for yourself, but claiming that they shouldn't compare a feature that both clients have is just plain stupid. i think the only bias here is your own head.
and of course advertising is going to be taken into consideration when comparing the two clients. some people don't like to look at big ugly graphical ads. gmail is supported by very unobtrusive text ads, whereas hotmail's interface is marred by a very distracting graphical banner that takes far more time to load. this is probably one of the more important areas of comparison for most people. most people much prefer google's subtle text ads over graphical banners, and this alone would make gmail much more appealing to a lot of people over hotmail.
sorry, but your complaints are dumb. the comparison is not "amazingly biased." you are. there's nothing wrong with preferring hotmail for yourself, but your strained arguments make you look really stupid. - doublsh0t, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11why would they make the pictures in this story links to the same size gif of the image...retards
- dubbleenerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8the article missed out on the actual content of the email. Gmail makes it so much easier to view documents, pdfs, excel files, images etc from the browser itself. Multiple attachments can be downloaded in a single click (Gmail even nicely zips them up for you!). MP3 attachments can be played right from the browser without downloading, which works as an excellent preview. Who would really care if Live Hotmail came out with 3GB of storage? These smaller features are the ones that actually make Gmail a winner.
oh, and the fact that Gmail can automatically forward a copy of the email you receive, to another account. Live Hotmail will not implement that any time soon, as far as I can tell. - Danyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8worlds apart. but gmail needs imap support.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12WTF? How do they tie for POP access? You can't even access Hotmail via POP, even if you *pay* AFAIK, unless you use Outlook or some hack or extension to get it work with your email client. For that reason alone Hotmail isn't even an option.
- gquaglia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Live mail is optimized to run on IE and Windows, just like every other MS creation. This fact alone makes it a ***** product that I have no use for. I've been using gmail now for a year and its the best web based email around.
- danc4498, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Interface - advantage: Gmail
That's all I needed to see. I absolutely love Gmail's interface, and nothing can come close (especially not something that mimics Outlook). - ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@NICU said: "The only thing I don't like about Gmail is the lack of folders, but with filters and labels its actually more useful after getting used to it."
Agreed. I wish that there were BOTH folders and labels. - gquaglia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Lots of MS fanboy shills around here digging down the pro Google comments.
- crazydiode, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7just dont forget NOT to login atleast once a month. Else you will be left with only gmail..
- Scyth3, on 10/12/2007, -22/+28It may be kinda odd, but that review seemed awkwardly biased...like, amazingly biased.
I hate MS, but comparing things like "Chat" as a feature (which I don't want -- since it's my email), and "Advertising" seems kinda awkward.
//feel free to digg me down, but I still think it wasn't a very fair comparison. - saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If there's something that looks like an event in an email, GMail gives you an option on the right to add it to your calendar. It also understands meeting invitations from outlook and the like. What makes live's calendar more integrated?
- ducttapekz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No, it is integrated (loosely). If I get an email with Date and time info gmail asks me if I want to add it to my calendar.
- Drgn547, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I find it interesting that the new Live Mail is supported just fine in Windows (all browsers) but isn't supported in any browser in OS X besides Firefox (doesn't let you use the new Live Mail in Safari or Camino.)
bitches. - vafada, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yahoo! mail beta is a JS bloat! Firefox hangs for a few second when I open my Yahoo! mail.
I ended up going back to the old interface.
GMail FTW! Fast, simple and clean - glypht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From a hotmail account, can I…
Export my contacts? Nope.
Access via POP? Nope (apparently later this month you will be able to access hotmail from Outlook (only) on your desktop).
Forward messages? Nope.
Autoreply? Nope.
Sigh…
I'm sure that this prevents a good number of hotmail users from switching to gmail, microsoft have certainly done the best they could to make it very hard to ever leave. I came across all these problems when recently 'switching' a friend to gmail, in the end there was no pretty solution, she had to email everyone in her address book with her new address and she will have to check back every now and then to be sure she's not missing any stray messages.
For the record, should she ever want to leave gmail she will be able to export all her contacts, set up forwarding to her new address, or set an autoreply with a link to her new address, or continue to access gmail via POP either from a desktop client or a webmail service that allows POP retrieval (like gmail does!).
It's good to compare the two on their advertised features but it's also worth mentioning some of the issues that you might run into later on. - dvshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4gcal is still a better calendar though....
- gquaglia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They do? News to me. I thought more people used Yahoo's email then MS.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Free POP3 access for mail clients, mail alerters and mobile devices.
Gmail yes, windows live no.
Good game. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10"When the hell did it become so trendy to accuse any product you don't like of being a copy, regardless of whether there's any truth to it?"
When it became the trendy way to bash Microsoft.
It's free email for Christ's sake! I have accounts with Yahoo, Gmail, Live, and God knows what else. It's nothing more than a fancy way to send text messages. - jcheng, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5(Microsoft employee) Actually Hotmail works just as well in Firefox. I thought I heard someone around here say that Windows Live applications don't get to ship unless they work just as well under Firefox as IE, and at least have a fallback experience that works under Safari.
- furst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All that spam in my hotmail account kills it for me.
- hudef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Even if hotmail was a match for gmail, I'd be too embarrassed to use it. Like hanging a sign around my neck saying "I'M A MORON!".
- freakout1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like Gmail because it's simple to use, has a good spam filter, and has more than enough space than I could ever use. I've stuck with it ever since I've switched from Yahoo.
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"just dont forget NOT to login atleast once a month. Else you will be left with only gmail.."
Rewritten:
"Just remember to login at least once a month; else, you will be left with only Gmail."
Gotta love double negatives. - blue02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There should be an automatic point deduction from Windows Live Hotmail for that ridiculous name.
- uzytkownik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Folders could be emulated by labels (ie. one message can have one label).
- Katana314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How is it biased? There are a number of things that they hand over to Hotmail, and even declare a tie for purposes of being unable to test.
- Grumby24, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6In the case of Live Hotmail (in typical MS fashion) it's too little too late to try to surpass Gmail.
- SpriteMV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How disappointing...was hoping MS would finally allow me to access my long-time hotmail account through POP so I can send/receive through my gmail inbox. Anyone else waiting for this? *sigh*
- crazydiode, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i was unable to access my hotmail account for more than 2 months and i find that my account has been deleted. I stopped using hotmail then.
