fricking.
time. - DearInternets, on 08/21/2008, -2/+56FTA, "The strict limits won't stop robocalls from political campaigns" ... those are the only robocalls I get.
- Fracture98, on 08/21/2008, -0/+38Think about that. They can still call you and interrupt you, they just then have to have a way to let you opt out.
Hi, this is Bob's Carpet Cleaning calling to tell you about our new 10% off deal for three rugs or more. We use biodegradable solutions, and guarantee our work.
If you wish to opt out of this call about Bob's Carpet Cleaning and their 10% off deal for three rugs using biodegradable solutions (all work guaranteed!)... please dial '9' to opt-out and we won't tell you about Bob's Carpet Cleaning 10% off deal... otherwise stay on the line! - ap1983, on 08/21/2008, -2/+26This is friggin awesome, theres nothing worse then trying to tell a telemarketer you're not interested but, of course, they're not programmed to respond to human interruption. And people think the Matrix isn't real
- random12345, on 11/16/2008, -0/+21Wow! It only took 100 years for telemarketers to be taken care of! I have a positive outlook on future fights against e-mail spam.
- sims5487, on 08/21/2008, -0/+19Lucky you. Every day seems to me to be "the second warning that your automobile may be nearing the end of its warranty!!!" for a model car I don't even own.
- GMills, on 08/21/2008, -8/+25I'm actually pretty angry about this. I love looking at the caller id and seeing that its a telemarketer so I get to insult a robotic voice.
- nullcodes, on 08/21/2008, -4/+2110 PRINT "As a robot, this sucks."
20 GOTO 10
As a robot, this sucks.
As a robot, this sucks.
As a robot, this sucks.
As a robot, this sucks.
As a robot, this sucks.
.. - tucsonsun13, on 08/21/2008, -4/+21***** it........WE'LL DO IT LIVE !!!
- DigSomeMore, on 08/21/2008, -2/+17Oh thank you, this is good news to read....
- Darkaged, on 08/21/2008, -0/+14One thing that I really hate about human telemarketers Is that they get offended when you tell them to leave you alone. And don't give me any of that "It's their job" BS because they know what they are doing and they know that they are annoying.
- ryan83189, on 08/21/2008, -2/+15It's a glitch in the Matrix!
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -1/+13Dugg for your bravery in posting something in BASIC.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -1/+13I have managed phone banks for political campaigns. Cold calling you at home is a mainstay of every political campaign. No politician on earth will ever make political solicitations illegal. Democrats, Progressives, Republicans, Neocons, all hop on the phone to get into office.
A ballot prop is the only way to get these to stop, and even a do not call ballot prop would require numerous phonebanks cold calling voters to pass. "Hello how would you like this to be the last political phone call you ever recieve, vote yes on prop 327 - Atomic1fire, on 08/21/2008, -1/+12those need to go as well.
both sides are more then likely guilty of using them - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10I've learned to enjoy telemarketer calls. I simply say "Yes" to every single question they ask you.
It's hilarious to listen to the telemarketer struggle after asking you 5 times to answer a question that doesn't have a yes or no answer. - purkel, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9I thought if you add your phone number to the Do Not Call registry... companies couldnt call you. But I still get tons of telemarketer calls... its terrible.
- ZeeZee2k, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8I know, im on do not call list and i still get tons of those annoying calls everyday. They even got my dads cellphone #.
- mikedoth, on 08/21/2008, -1/+9ROBOCOP!
- mishaneah, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8Black list capabilities should be included in every phone. Imagine having an email service that doesn't allow SPAM filtering.
- talonstriker, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8Nice to see this but where are the ***** fines?!?!? I have my number on the do-not-call list and I still get these god damn calls. Has FTC completely forgotten about the do-not-call registry?
On a sidenote, I urge everyone to boycott companies who don't mind annoying us in order to spew their advertisements at us. - mbraynard, on 08/22/2008, -0/+7Have a heart. Sometimes old people just need someone to talk to.
- TheClassic, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6My wife and I've started getting these calls on our cell phones. I'm sure its just a mistake on the callers part, but unlike a human telemarketer, I haven't had a way of telling them to stop calling.
- ObeseSnake, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6If you're number(s) is on the list then file a complaint for every call you receive...
https://www.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck ... - ThaDRD, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6"This is our 2nd and final call about the warranty on your car...." No, actually, this is about the 527th time you've called me about the warranty on my 2007 vehicle.
I got so pissed off one time that I told them I didn't need their warranty because I am rich, drive high line cars, and I just throw the car away and buy another when it breaks. They didn't know what to say. - Jeremyz0r, on 08/21/2008, -1/+7"Hi, this is Bob's Carpet Cleaning..", "Go ***** yourself." *click*
- Kohaxx, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6It's a family tradition.
- Darkaged, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Awesome:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Oh4EPcOpSy8 - ap1983, on 08/21/2008, -5/+10Friggin awesome! There's nothing worse than trying to tella telemarketer you're not interested but, of course, they're not programmed to respond to human interruption
- locke2002, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Do you frequently find yourself eating pie with your family?
- Kohaxx, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6At least email spam has easy ignore options, including literally ignoring them. Can't do that as easily with phone calls in the middle of eating pie with the family.
- simplyintricate, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6Okay first of all, this may or may not work. If it works, great, I will enjoy my peace and quiet. If it doesn't, there are a couple scenarios as to why it won't:
1. Offshore telemarketers, FTC can't do crap about that.
2. Telemarketers simply won't obey
3. Telemarketers would obey but put the message at the very end of a super long message and make the process extremely hard but possible to do.
With that in mind, we'll see what happens when those deadlines pass. If they don't work, well just another example why the FTC fails and why we should have businesses and consumer groups protecting us instead. (For example.. email companies have anti spam software. Why can't we have a phone company that filters out telemarketers? Skype does this I believe.) - Rikkochet, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Just write the politician a letter saying that while you appreciate their hard work, due to them utilizing impersonal recorded messages to annoy you at home in YOUR free time while THEY don't even have to lift a finger, they will not be getting your vote.
If enough (and enough doesn't have to be even 10%) people complain, NOT having wardialers will be a campaign point, along the same lines as animal testing or organic foods. - EtherGnat, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Be careful of entering contests, signing up for mailing lists, providing your telephone number when you purchase something, and the like. Companies are allowed to contact you if they have a business relationship with you even if you're on the Do Not Call list, so they've become very aggressive about establishing the most tenuous of connections.
If you ask them to take you off their list and they still call, or if you have no relation with you (it could be really tough to know), you can sue them and collect some pretty substantial damages. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Could block them in your PBX from numbers listed at http://www.whocalled.us/ That should stop some. Spammers and telemarketers do not obey rules. There are probably better lists. I don't answer the phone.
- braclark, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5What I hate most is the telemarketer calls where no one is there right when I pick up the phone. After 5-10 seconds someone is there and asks for me. I wish they'd ban these calls. If you want to get a hold of me, then have someone waiting for me to answer.
After they ask for someone, I usually just say "please hold", put them on hold, and then see how long they wait. It's usually under a minute, but some can be as long as two minutes. - altgeeky1, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5Yes, but after December if they call you, they will be breaking TWO rules.. not one, TWO!
Seriously, the only robo calls I get are political ones. I was on the Mass do not call list before the US Federal list went live. I know some other people get tons of garbage calls but I've been lucky. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -2/+6Robocall Robocall *****
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -2/+6"more then likely"
Correction: then -> than - ThaDRD, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5That opt out ***** never works.
- Kohaxx, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4More exciting is the idea of requiring written consent to be contacted by Sept '09. About damn time, I'm tired of getting on "do not call lists" just to end up called by different people who get info from those lists. Just have to be careful what you sign for now on, well you should have been anyway but you get the point.
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4They need to instantly revoke the phone service and business license of any business who spoofs or hides their phone number on call display.
- redfred18t, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4***** telemarketers suck
- digiguy, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4If you have call forwarding, just forward the call to the police department during dinner time
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4But how else will I know that the factory warranty on my vehicle is about to expire if the robot from the warranty department doesn't call me ten times a ***** day?!
- sirjoebob, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5correcting wrongs on the internet is like subtracting one from infinity....
- mcarrera, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4https://www.donotcall.gov/
- random12345, on 11/16/2008, -0/+4Dugg for pie.
- afx1, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3"Dick, you're fired!"
"Thank you." - PseudoThink, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4I agree that this kind of regulation seems to go against traditional Libertarian views. However, much like the Internet, the national telecom infrastructure is just too big for any company or conglomerate to hope to offer a viable alternative. Even if they could, would we really want another set of telephone poles and lines installed everywhere, just to allow competition to fix things? It would be a huge waste of our natural resources (copper, for example), and would further diminish the attractiveness of our landscape. It's just not feasible or responsible for any company to say "the phone system is broken, let's build a new one that works like it should". In circumstances like these, I think it's important for government to step in and make sure the peoples' interests are represented.
That said, I think it's also critical that due process is used to make sure it's actually in everyone's best interests. -
