I took down the one of the baby by itself and blurred his face in the group photo. Hope that addresses everyones' concerns. I know I would be quite anxious to get my camera back if I had lost it, more for the pics I guess, and I have spent several hours on this and even though the restaurant doesn't return messages (Osteria Serafina in NYC, which you'll see in the Flickr comments that someone recognized about 10 mins after I posted them - pretty impressive!).
Again. Very sorry to make some of you angry. If you feel that strongly that I should take them down I will. I don't want people wanting to sue me or angry at me. However, I daresay that your vitriol would be better (but still quite misdirected, as everyone makes mistakes) addressed to those who left their camera lying about to begin with.
Secretivecoward hopes I get sued for copyright infringement, although I'm not sure how that would work, being that there was no copyright that was infringed. Or was there? Perhaps he understands far more about this sort of thing that I do - I am quite ready to admit that I am no copyright attorney and my knowledge of the subject is cursory at best.
Again, I apologize profusely if my attempts to return this have bothered some people, and again if it is a majority opinion that this was a bad idea, I'll take the pictures down ASAP. - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"^^ And your point was what? That you know how to look at an Exif? Good 4 u!"
His point was that with no effort he was able to obtain a considerable bit of info that was supposed to be used by the owners to identify themselves as the rightful owners.
Did you think to do it? No. Neither did I. - tofuman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I mean here - http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/29121
- rlutterb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Shame on you paranoid a-holes.
This is a very thoughtful and kind thing to do, and you've screwed it up. Congrats. Just because you are hiding from the feds because of your pot-growing and song-stealing, doesn't mean the majority of the populace are.
A couple inoffensive pictures posted for ID purposes is fine... if these folks are on the lam, or have the infintessimal chance of being in the witness protection program, then they shouldn't have left their camera in a public place.
You people suck. This is definitely the dark side of Digg. - TheGooseyOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow my respect of the digg community has fell greatly...this guy is just trying to do something nice and you all threaten him
sad - ericscampbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Xplorer, yeah, it's a funny thing; I really like Digg & use it all the time, but I know surprisingly little about its technical aspects... (why some pages fall off quickly & others stick around, what the feedback really does, how some people wind up with high feedback numbers & others stay at zero)
it also continues to crack me up that "Digg" keeps getting caught by Digg's spell checker.... I mean if someone was really pouring resources into Digg, wouldn't they have fixed that by now? don't get me wrong, I love Digg, but I wonder what's behind the curtain? Is it really a wizard or is it just a little man pulling levers? - tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Punishing rogue camera retailers, returning lost property, etc. Digg is a new brand of superhero. Who says the internet is bad for society? Next stop, eradication of terrorism...
- DogHumpsMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The 'rate comment' thing must remove the posts, because I just scanned through all of the comments, and couldn't find a post from secretivecoward.
And it's pretty lame to rip this person and try and make them feel bad, let alone make them worried they are going to get sued (for something the plaintiff would have absolutely no grounds for suit, at least in the state of New York)for trying to do the right thing. The 'net would be a lot more fun if more people treated it like real life instead of using the anomymity that it provieds to act like assbags and say all the things they would never have the balls to say on the street. Just my $.02 - Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So much for the witness relocation program.
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ABout the restaurant that has the Forbes award. You know, I have read Forbes for years, and max number of resaurants that they survey is 3. Thats 3 a month, and I don't recall ever seeing but ONE that they said to stay away from. All the rest were green, for go, and yellow, for go with caution.... So, don't take the forbes sign for a reason to stop by there. Get a heads up from the locals. hehehehe
What camera? Sued? I doubt it seriously. You would the laughing stock of the entire internet if you tried to sue the German for finding it and trying to get it back to the owners!!!!
Cyborg
Yes, for trying to do good.... - Feedback65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think you people talking about suing someone over pictures , that aren't porn or other wise some form of cruelty are ***** , so what
the kid was in the picture. And even if there was some perv out there looking at them , please tell me how he is going to find where that kid lives. I mean get over it the person who found the camera should be thanked and not be treated like some criminal. This world needs more caring people and this person is one of them . - Psalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Digg for good purpose. Uhm, I woudlnt' turn it into the cops ... one of them would steal it. Cops are dishonest, well most are."
Thats just a horrible insinuation. - datapoohbah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What a crock, a reasonable person, trying to do the right thing which is rare enough as it is. Yet he gets intimidated chased away from his cause by a bunch of yahoo's who more than likely would have kept the camera and probably would have photo-shopped the photos and posted them somewhere on the net just for the fun of it.
Sheesh. What a bunch of tards. - Nu_Metalz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with goosey too...Sad!
- imajilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The camera costs $250. These folks look to be pretty well financed. It's been half a year since those pics were taken. Wouldn't be suprised if they just went a bought another camera. The pirate guy looks pissed.
- Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Must have been a hell of a party. They got a pirate and everything.
- hcetrepus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To hell with everyone bitching about what he did. he was trying to help, and sadly, those of you who all whined about it are why too few people help others today.
- jesusfreak216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1we need some kind of page to report this kind of crap and possibly get secretivecoward and the others banned from digg
- ericscampbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as far as a way to report trolls, I've been assuming the "Rate Comment" does the trick...
of course, I don't really know how the "Rate Comment" thing works -- does it just rate a specific post as a flame, or does it add cumulatively? ...and what happens if the person gets rated as a flamer on a regular basis?
Digg's info page doesn't really address how this works. any info is appreciated. - Pharoah6905, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i doubt a person who was stupid enough to lose their camera and not realize till now will be smart enough to think about going to flickr to see if the pictures got uploaded, and they probably wouldnt be reading digg anyway
- ericscampbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1secretivecoward is an obvious troll -- please stop feeding him & the others.
...and is it just me or do there seem to be a lot more trolls on Digg recently?
for those of you wondering what I'm talking about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll - DrumsNWhistles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is a terrific application for Flickr -- Given that it's probably the highest-profile photo sharing service on the web, it's a wonderful place to start getting the camera back into the hands of its rightful owner.
kudos to the finders for being creative in thier efforts to return it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1linsys would probably sue the person who posted pictures of his lost dog around the neigbhorhood.
some people are just losers. linsys is one of those people. - TheGooseyOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1im glad 2 sane people visit digg, geoboy
digg is way, way too liberal some times, get a grip people
today, someone could have helped someone else find their digital camera, instead a good effort is lost because of all your useless threats - jesusfreak216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think it was a good idea! i see at least 11 people and say all of those people have 10 friends that would recognize them at a glance. so thats 110 people that might look at flicker or digg. one of them will tell the person they know in the photo and the info will thus get to the owner of the camera. simple
- bookishboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Copyright infringement? With traditional film photos, copyright is assumed to belong to the person who owns the negatives. Wouldn't ownership of digital photos revert to the person who owns the original instance of them? IE, the camera itself, with the photos still in it?
As far as I can tell, this guy OWNS the copyright to these photos, unless someone can produce evidence to the contrary.... evidence that only he has, since he's in possession of the camera. - fredgarvin1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good intentions, dugg,
secretivecoward, your a *****. You, my friend, are what is wrong with this world. - SolidGun1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Turn this into police? Good luck having them work so hard to find its owner....it will end up at an auction in no time.
What a nice guy....I did something like this for an iPod I found and found the owner just fine. - hewnandhammered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well one reason we didn't leave it at the police station lost and found is that 2 cabdrivers told us that those items would simply be sold off or given to anyone who came in and asked for them, without having to prove ownership. and since i wanted the owner to get them, and not some random greedy person, i thought this had a far better chance of more people seeing it than the owner. believe me, i'm schooled - i won't do this again, and am very sorry to those i offended - case closed, no need to talk about this any more.
- eschatonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@hewnandhammered: I think it's clear that you have good intentions, but don't forget the old saying "no good deed goes unpunished".
While I would be inclined to do exactly what you did, don't forget that there are a lot of uptight assclowns out there like "secretivecoward" who would see this as an opportunity to sue your ass. It's unfortunate that we live in a world where people act like that, but you should be aware that not everyone will see things your way, and among those, there will always be a few zealots who will attempt to take advantage of the situation. Just be careful! - F20Z3N, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1psalm, so you are telling me that it is impossible for someone that knows any of the people in the picture and visits digg or flickr to get in contact with the person and let them know what is going on?? Come on now.
- FunkyChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is awesome. It's nice to see that there are still good people in the World.
- jesusfreak216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1excatly F20Z3N, the odds say this guy will get his camera back^^^
- hewnandhammered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, I guess you are right. Sorry. I just always treat people well and expect the same from them, and because I live in a community where people tend to be kind to one another, I guess I just assume that the rest of the world is like that too. I will try not to let this change the way I treat others, though. I appreciate your note.
- NiteMayr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's another spin, pictures taken by people who stole a digital camera
http://flickr.com/photos/nitemayr/sets/1331176/ - hewnandhammered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0okay, since people hope that i get sued for putting the pics up, I will take them down now. I apologize to all I offended. Again, sorry.
- HajRdu, on 08/01/2008, -0/+0or just go to www.lostyourcamera.se
- TheGooseyOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, 3 sane people now rlutterb...good post
- amitrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"if you know any of the folks in these pictures, have them email me with the following info for the return of their very nice camera: tell me where & when I found it/where it was lost (city and particular circumstance)"
this is funny for if the guys who lost the camera KNEW where and when it was lost, wouldn't they rather find it out themselves?? - Xplorer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree ericscampbell I have been doing the same for all the stupid trash on here, I have a bad feeling that it dosent do much other than hide it on your screen. But I could be wrong.
Did anyone make a mirror of the pictures?
I hate it when idiots strongarm people that are trying to do the right thing.... - VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0once again, the 2000lawsuit babys are crying again about taking down shiz because they are crying.
- wtfunkymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's see, the pictures are time stamped. the menus are clearly visible in at least one shot, you can see the name on the door, and it's won a Forbes award in 1997. You know the time, you know the place. Obviously a large party, had to have made a reservation.
This is a mystery how? - hewnandhammered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, I should have been clearer since you probably didn't read the comments on Flickr. I have called the restaurant twice (Osteria Serafina) and have not gotten a return call. I tried during business hours but they were too busy to talk to me and said they would call me back. So, hopefully they will.
- ajaykilkenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What ass holes are gonna complain about somebody elses pictures being posted on the web. good god man get a lif this guy was doing a good deed and got threatined with lawsuits by people who were not even posted.
- hewnandhammered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, so many of you have a better way of doing this than I do. I wish I had asked here before I tried to find the owner. I've really gotten an education - don't worry, I won't try to do something like this again! Jeesh.
- NiteMayr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oddball: That's not my sister.
Go ahead and have a ball or two. - oddball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Here's another spin, pictures taken by people who stole a digital camera

Thanks nitemayr, I really enjoyed looking at all your photos, especially your family, I'm gonna print out this picture of your sister and use it when i masturbate.
