- martoq, on 04/10/2008, -4/+58Actually the first decent idea I have heard in awhile. The government modernizing on technology to replace or supplement old antiquated systems is a good thing.
- laserblazer, on 04/10/2008, -3/+55run 4 ur Lifes!11
- colinmhayes, on 04/10/2008, -2/+35you die.
- santaliqueur, on 04/10/2008, -2/+30Does it bother you that your keyboard has no question mark?
- Shabow, on 04/10/2008, -6/+33More importantly, why should the government know my cellphone number?
- MrErr, on 04/10/2008, -10/+37What if we homeland security starts broadcasting their terror levels on cells phones. That would convert all of us in fearful people (just what they want).
- doctechnical, on 04/10/2008, -0/+24"This is a test. This is only a test. Had this been an actual emergency you'd be a pile of radioactive dust by now. This is only a test."
- bills534, on 04/10/2008, -1/+21They wont. The govt sends the message to your cell phone provider and then the provider pushes the message to all the customers who opted in.
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -0/+19If you have a phone that doesnt have the ability to get a text message, its time to hitch your ***** chariot up to the god damn stegosaurus and go out and trade some furs and shiny rocks for a new one.
- vpshockwave, on 04/10/2008, -2/+19Assuming it was used to reasonable standards, this seems quite practical.
- 955701, on 04/10/2008, -0/+15I would receive it warmly - the tornado sirens aren't very loud where we are and since I've moved to Georgia I've had two tornadoes come within 2 miles of the house. Also, although the cable box will unmute during a tornado warning, the television itself doesn't.
The phone would have succeeded on both occasions. - edwartica, on 04/10/2008, -1/+16Ok, Amber alerts?!?!?! I'm sorry, but I would rather not get a text everytime a child is missing.
- Memnochxx, on 04/10/2008, -2/+17Then you need to get with the ***** times.
- daEvan, on 04/10/2008, -0/+13idk, my bff Jill?
- lava, on 04/10/2008, -0/+12SOME1 SET US UP THE BOMB - POTUS
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -1/+13As long as I get to opt out.
- Aleman360, on 04/10/2008, -2/+12This would be much better than those annoying screens that interrupt my TV shows.
- KMartSheriff, on 04/10/2008, -0/+10I can see it now...
"EMERGENCY TEXT ALERT: Never gonna give you up..."
A nation-wide rickroll? I can think of no better way to go to prison. - Conwaysb0718, on 04/10/2008, -2/+12Neither of you have teenage daughters do you?
- Osirus1156, on 04/10/2008, -1/+11It will most likely be a free text message if it's going to work.
- Chompy, on 04/10/2008, -0/+10OMFG I M iN MDAIR!!! TELL WIFE I HEART H
- colinmhayes, on 04/10/2008, -2/+11Well, I trust my university to use their system correctly, and they do. I get a text when school's delayed or cancelled for snow or if there's some crazy bitch who just killed her two kids taking a mental health councelor hostage at gunpoint in the student health center. You know, useful things.
Somehow, I don't trust the gov't to be as good with it. - bctrainers, on 04/10/2008, -1/+10Oh yay! More unneeded junk on my phone that I press delete a few moments later on.
- Chompy, on 04/10/2008, -0/+9Seven hurricanes? I've got a great idea for you: move.
- pyrotix, on 04/10/2008, -4/+13The last thing I want is government propaganda delivered to my SMS inbox. Oy.
- Genady, on 04/10/2008, -0/+9Down lower in the thread I think I hit on it. Make every cell tower an EBS broadcaster. Ignore the GPS, ignore the phone numbers for that matter. Have an EBS message sent to every handset talking to a tower. Gets away from phone numbers, gets away from gps, takes the idea of 'broadcast' back to it's roots rather than 'insanely large and complicated multicast'.
Yeah, I could get behind the idea that every cell tower has to have an EBS thingy that can alert all phones in it's range. Then it makes localization of EBS even easier. - Armstrong3, on 04/10/2008, -0/+9Put me on the Do Not Text list for this one.
- Chompy, on 04/10/2008, -0/+8Alert! The Humor Value of this post has been lowered to teal.
- ControlcChris, on 04/10/2008, -5/+13And what if your phone doesn't have texting on it.
- timusca, on 04/10/2008, -2/+10Dis is a txt. Dis is only a txt. Had dis been an actl emer u would b a pile of rdioactv dust by now. Dis is only a txt.
- Barbarino, on 04/10/2008, -2/+10I think it's a great idea, I've been in 7 serious Hurricanes, and it would come in handy. Then again, a generator and direct tv works even better..
- silentboom, on 04/10/2008, -0/+7So you want the government to warn of things like Katrina? ha , enjoy swimming.
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -0/+7Fail. You lack an even basic understanding of how a system like this would work.
- edwartica, on 04/10/2008, -1/+8I actually do. I went for a cheaper plan, and since I don't text that often - made more sense to go with the bare minimum.
- seeyouinteatime, on 04/10/2008, -6/+12See, they text you once and THEN you're alerted every single time Akon comes comes out with a new ringtone.
- ZeroSumDivide, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6Somehow I imagine such service messages will be provided free of charge/covered by taxes, like 911.
- sfacets, on 04/10/2008, -1/+7And the culture of terror continues.
- enclaved, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5The IRS
- alittleroy101, on 04/10/2008, -1/+6Can you imagine if some spammers got their hands on this registry?
- Conwaysb0718, on 04/10/2008, -2/+7You think they already dont?
- trying2hide, on 04/10/2008, -1/+6I think the idea is impractical at best. How often is there a valid emergency that applies to all citizens? Regionally who would control it? The local homeland security? Who would pay for the extra jobs?
Seriously, I KNOW those lovely folks on the East coast want to be warned for every Midwestern flood of tornado that comes rippin' through. - nugx, on 04/10/2008, -3/+8Sounds like nothing more than the FCC throwing their giant Telecom buddies a bone. The last thing I am worried about, and therefore, willing to pay for, is insurance for a hypothetical national emergency. 9/11 went down and everyone in the nation with at least 2 brain cells knew about it while it was going down. Everyone saw it on TV. Word spread pretty fast. I don't think we need a Federal infrastructure to deal with this. What a waste of money.
- TheSuperunknown, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5There are other kinds of emergencies. Tornadoes? Even today we're hearing people bitch about how there's no warning, when the NWS typically issues a warning 15-20 minutes in advance!
- GruntboyX, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5great...so every time a child is abducted every cellphone in a meeting is going to go off.... Now if it sends a picture message of the abducted child...that could be pretty useful. But a simple text message of an amber alert go to...www.seethis.com ...that will just be annoying.
- Genady, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5Screw the phone numbers. Make it a system that lives on the towers. Send a special 'EBS' message to any handset communicating with the tower. No phone numbers involved.
- Speed, on 04/10/2008, -1/+5"How does the government know where your phone is to send it an EBS message? Do you really want them knowing where your phone is?"
Most cell phones have a GPS type chip in them, so when you call 911, they know approx where you are. I imagine it'd use the same chip. - hydroplane, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4Another reason to ditch the cell phone.
- Chompy, on 04/10/2008, -2/+6Agreed. That said, I think this is a good idea if it's limited to, say, a tornado/hurricane/etc warning in my area.
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -2/+6If you cant see how this could be very useful in many cases, then you have your ***** foil hat on to tight. During any big disaster getting information to people is damn near impossible. We have an EBS for our TVs for a reason, I fail to see why having one that works for battery operated devices that almost everyone has is a bad thing.
