- SmokeChiba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14So we can spend over $81 BILLION dollars on the war in Iraq, and cant give the FBI $56 million to fight crime right here in America? Now thats screwed up.
- dgaspard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9LockHeed Martin is creating the application. I wonder how much they are charging the FBI for opensource software.
- stephenv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Sentinel is being built by Lockheed Martin contractors in four phases. Its designers currently are building an electronic records repository and a security network to limit its access."
Translation: they set up and configured some SQL servers and added some user accounts. - malkir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It would be screwed up if the FBI hadn't already wasted hundreds of millions on a computer system that doesn't work.

At what point do you tell the people in charge of the FBI's technology that they are bumbling idiots and that they aren't allowed to waste anymore money? - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Do a deal with Google, start running ads on VICAP and get it finished by second quarter 2007. Easy Peasy.
- briguymaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4they should hold a bake sale.
- anthonybruno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5sounds like someone is trying to upgrade to vista.
- Anpheus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When are you allowed to say that to the military?
The point the poster made is still valid, the FBI has wasted _ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE_ less money. - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Using free open source software whenever possible would be a good start.
- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or... Buy a godaddy account and store it in a MySQL database.
/Sarcasm
Although it would be the last place a hacker would look! - stephenv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4$425m total price tag?!! No wonder these asshats can't find OBL... they're spending all the money on vaporware.
- tashpool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With those awesome brownies my grandma always makes. They always tasted so...special. I guess it was just the love.
- Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So when will this be finished? It seems like this new system has taken the better part of a decade!
- glock22ownr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It will never be finished, it sounds like a crappy software project with too many managers, too few workers... and a crapload of beaurocracy to boot. Anyone that has worked at a large enterprise... think of the worst project that you have been on.. now times that by 100, and the best part is.. we're paying for it!
- duerra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The FBI doesn't need any more money, just like every other Federal Department. The government is wasting too much money these days on hundreds and thousands of other intrusive ideas that are evading and threatening our personal privacy (hell, probably this software, too). They, and every other federal department needs a budget CUT, not an increase.
- BrewmasterC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ack. I actually browsed the report. Those in charge should be immediately sacked. Seems like case wikis with permission levels on each document is all they need.

You get the picture - willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its going to be replaced with MySpace/Google
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guess a PPP (Public-Private Partnership) is out of the question to share the costs. As the unit appears to have issues sharing anything. It also has a history of keeping 'public' matters very private and private matters very public!
- d03boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MySQL is not free. Postgresql is. Why does everyone urge to use MySQL?
- SmokeChiba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@skyshock211
I never said give them 81 Billion to create a police state. I'm just pointing out that we are spending our money in all the wrong places. - BrewmasterC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Argh. They are probably doing a bunch of model checking stuff to verify permissions, otherwise I can't fathom the cost. Might be cheaper just to give a select group of super-users a few google search boxes, and let them go willy-nilly answering requests. Make a two tier system. One for branch office info, and one for the whole department.
The only privacy concerns I can think of are witness protection and entrapment operations. Both of which they should avoid at all costs due to the administrative headache in maintaining them. - o2o2o2o2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>> MySQL is not free. Postgresql is. Why does everyone urge to use MySQL?
Because MySQL has allot of support and users. When places like Godaddy and Powweb start offering point and click installs of software for Postgresql, then more people will hop onboard. Until then, MySQL is the hot item. - growler1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Too bad all the best people who would be best at building and maintaining the best systems and system management in the world are the same people who hold the FBI as their mortal enemies.
Oh well. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So you would rather the 86 Billion be invested in creating a police state here at home? No thanks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2How can we have billions to spend in Iraq and not have 50 million for the FBI?
Looks like SmokeChiba beat me to it...
