- johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm not sensationalising, that pees me off too. The fact is there were chemical explosions and they were very costly.
The explosions caused a lot of damage. The fire itself should have been handled by the ultra-modern fire system designed exactly to handle the sort of chemicals that are stored there, but for some reason they failed. The fire reached chemicals, leading to explosions which caused further damage. Had the fire system worked, and the fire not-reached the chemicals, only minor damage would have been done. There is also a lot of concern now about the handling of the incident as the fire crews had no awareness of the types of chemicals that were stored there, and neither did any available staff.
I graduated from there during the summer. I've been reading up on this all day, talking to people and listening to the university radio, and the linked BBC article doesn't cover the whole story. I'm just reporting what is known so far. - johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh, there's also a big collection of photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mad_gemma/sets/1245162/
you can see that the building was ripped to shreds, and there are still lots of fire crews there. - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hopefully for the university they don't find they were storing hazardous chemicals inappropriately.
- ironmonkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To keep it simple, that just sucks for the Internet all around. I wonder how this is going to play into the whole multinational effort to try and take some of the control of the Internet from the U.S.?
- cybertron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys are a bunch of ***** morons. Grow the hell up. This is a huge set back for fiber technology. Stop with the stupid "pwnd" *****, or go back to CS. I pray to god Digg doesnt get so popular that its a primary source of information because with idiots like these, who needs Big News trying to skew every story.
- innternal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think it's sabotage, too >_>
- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but they were pwned
- johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WackyT: the BBC article is only brief and is not complete. I've been talking to people I know at the Uni. I've been listening to the official radio station run by it's student union, who have been talking directly to the admin, management and maintenance stafffor the latest news. That's where my information comes from and I have no reason to doubt it's accuracy. Most of this stuff will turn up in the news tomorrow once the press get back to work.
- eyckzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yikes...
thats so not cool...
I would of loved to see an explosion. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The gov knew they were getting to close.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this mean we will never see cheap fiber in US now?
I keed... - MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that would be the idiots who don't digg
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aww. That sucks for them and for us.
- Assiez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's horrible. I have a friend who goes to that university.
sadness. - MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i meant the idiots who don't READ digg. why won't they let us edit our comments?
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It was a fire that started in an electronics laboratory. The only mention of explosions in the article is:
"The building contained gas cylinders and a number of explosions could be heard, but no-one was injured."
Please don't try to sensationalize. It reduces your credibility to a supermarket tabloid. Thank you for trying. Hopfully you are more truthful in the future. - snapya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0lol the US is pwned!
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0 It sucks, but no one was hurt and I'm sure they have the money to rebuild it.
It's not very often you hear "computer science" and "explosion" in the same sentence.
You know this is like the opening of a comic book. Next comes crimefighter Optic-Man! - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0pwned? Well doofus proved to us that he's a 12-year old bedwetter.
johnsto, no mention in the article of any chemicals being stored there except for liquid nitrogen tanks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Vin Diesel paid me to set the C4 charges at that laboratory.
