- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16In my opinion, Google is the only one who actually "acquires" users.
Yahoo and MSN (I believe they are the others in the top 3) use tactics like default homepages, browsers, subdomains, etc.
Honestly, how many people do you know who "go" to MSN?
When was the last time you saw someone type in search.yahoo.com to search for something?
Yahoo has Yahoo! Mail which is where a lot of their users come from, but still. - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Yahoo

Hopefully next year brings as much innovation as this last one... - Twinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Google has a monopoly on the internet search engine industry. I've been hearing, "Use Google" since for about 4 years now, ever since it first came out.
- uriah923, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Do you think this makes it the best stock to buy and keep for two years? Even when compared to stocks like Home Depot, ExxonMobil, Apple, and the like?
http://www.omninerd.com/2006/12/27/polls/128 - subxero37, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6A monopoly is only bad when it prevents new, useful products from appearing. As of yet, Google is simply cleaning the web of crappy, useless products like MSN and Yahoo search. A monopoly is also bad when the product that is responsible for the monopoly is a terrible or poorly-supported product (Windows...)
As I see it, until these conditions become otherwise, I welcome Google's search engine monopoly. - Pulp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did it really take "experts" to figure this out?
This maybe be my naive perspective, but if YouTube was operated under the Google domain like Yahoo! Movies, I'm pretty sure Google would be the current number one.
Also, I don't know too much about this stuff, so I was wondering if google.ca and the like are considered a separate entities, because I know the Canadian division of Yahoo! (ca.yahoo.com) is still part of yahoo.com. - tehdoom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Arg... don't misuse the term monopoly. Monopoly means 'exclusive control of a commodity or service in a particular market.' There are lots of alternatives to Google, but not as many people use them.
Google isn't the *only* search engine out there, just the most popular. - bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A major reason why we are doing so well is because of you, the users. As a Googler and an avid Digg'er I'm proud to be a part of both. Happy holidays and a new year everybody.
- HRF1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tell us something we wouldn't be able to figure on our own.
- hattrick35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really don't understand how microsoft is the most visited site. Even with software updates. I have a PC, and I've only been there a few times in my life.

- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well Google used to be an engine that pointed to content, but after youtube was acquired as well as services like gmail and such it is a Content company as well.
- Bigbro69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"...Google, which defied gravity this year..."
More plans towards world domination? - FederalSource, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who clicks on the freakin adds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- fugazi48, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't me looking at this Digg article if it wasn't for my Google personalized homepage.
- ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think he was meaning Google Earth....
(jk) - Darkness123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If on www.google.com there was a "Make Google Your Homepage" script, Google would be #1 site on the internet overnight. Since most people just leave it as IEs Default page.
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want to be the expert that said that, he must have the easiest job EVER!
- tehdoom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Also, I wouldn't use monopoly to describe Google because of the negative connotation the word has. The situation with Google now is good for the search engine market because it encourages other search engines to become better so that they can compete.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1sacsate...what did they innovate this year? Buying existing sites?
G-Razor...wow..you have seriously left reality. Google "Acquired" users by being one of the first to get heir toolbar offered on a zillion pages. Take all the peopel using Google toolbar for searches (as well as people using Yahoo toolbars, etc.) and it is a much closer race.
They did not "acquire" those people at all.
Newsflash for people in fatnasy land. Most people do not give a ***** what search engine they use, ebcuase 99% of hte time, they will find what they want on ANY site. - amandaL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, at one point, people praised Microsoft for being new and innovative and sooo much better than the old, stodgy, slow moving IBM..
Google is certainly in it's heyday, but nothing stays at the top forever.
However, that's not to say it's going to crumble anytime soon.. bravo Google! (though as an article pointed out a few weeks ago, it's certainly time for a new giant to emerge) - jangeloca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is a solid company and with the purchase of Youtube it should actually be able to save money that is if Youtube can at least maintain its traffic and search volume.
The reason I say this is that Search Revenue is a very large source of revenue to the various sites that work with Google. If you do the math and use Myspace as a measuring tool here is my thought
Myspace is getting 500M per year for access to its daily reach that goes from 30-40K
Youtube purchased for 1.5B has a daily reach of 60-70K
Just based on search traffic its probable that Google will have broke even on just what it could have been paying Youtube for search in under 2 years , and thats not even counting the revenue that Youtube was making excluding Google.
Also so good things about Google that I like ,,
they have an easy way to look at company financials in the Finance area of Google example
As for Yahoo , its still a good over all information web site. - yano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well Google is the fastest loading search engine site between them, Microsoft and Yahoo...
What other website will load in 0.609seconds. - erdizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1we need only Google + FireFox in 2007. It enough for future Internet users :))
my respect to google team! Happy New Year
http://browserswar.com - ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1With that sort of comment...I don't think you'll be waking up tomorrow morning...
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Oh, what a shocker!!
- arcterex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Google isn't really a place to go though, it's a place to get to other places right?
Also, does the #1 spot really matter to anyone but execs? - jgarifuna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this would happen around August 2007, if the following article, titled, "Google projected King of the Web by August 2007" is correct:
http://www.jgari.com/?q=node/32 - xy7luke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Google is awesome. One day they may have world domination :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yes that s true google is going to be Number one next year, Becos its flexible and fast. Always changing algorithm thats a great advantage for them.
http://www.seopromotionlinks.com/contract_management.asp - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0A monopoly? They don't even have a MAJORITY. They have a plurality. But not 50%
- DenDen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Google sucks. All you fan-girls out there will one day wake up and say "OMG they're worse than microsoft".
- micklerlop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1big deal..... biatch
