***** you, I'm not signing up for spam on your stupid ***** website. - TechHerder, on 10/12/2007, -8/+44I don't know why digg has not added this feature themselves. Maybe they are afraid of the bandwidth? Maybe they don't know how to generate the screenshots themselves?
This was created to give users a preview of a site before they click on it. Hopefully this will inspire digg's developers to add this as a permanent feature to digg.com in the future.
Feel free to contact us to talk about implementing this functionality on your site.
Enjoy!
-WebShotsPro.com Admins - xose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26More like preventing system gaming than bandwidth.
Websites could return different content to Digg's IP to get a better or more "catchy" picture than the actual site. - mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23TechHerder
How many times do people need to tell you they don't want to give you their email address? You're not Google and I don't trust that you wouldn't sell my email address to spammers.
What kind of privacy policy do you have? None? Am I supposed to trust you? That policy always works out well on the Internet.
Why do you need to send me emails? The answer is you don't. - zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23I would be surprised if the digg team wasn't already working on this.
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20itanshi
It uses the official Digg icon which is a no-no. - Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic, but thanks for the laugh regardless.
- piratepete, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20This doesn't work with my IE
- xose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I've done some changes to the extension myself, mostly to fix eye-candy and some usability oddities:
- Removed double-thumb on video links that alredy have a thumb.
- Clicking on thumbs opens a new window (or tab)
- Fixed thumb position on stories with short descriptions.
- Local thumb-back.png file to reduce server load.
- Some small style changes to integrate better with other Digg thumbs.
I don't know if the devs are alredy fixing those themselves, but as there's no mention of a specific license on the website I'm not uploading it yet. - andyperfect, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14looks nice and I like the idea, it's just it doesn't do enough to hassle with it.
- AltReality, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15What's this about it needing a token from webshotspro.com?
I don't wanna have to sign up for anything to use this.
-AltReality - mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Or, you know...we could keep our personal information private because there's no legitimate reason for you to be collecting it.
- daborg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I dugg him based on my assumption that he was being sarcastic and I thought it was funny.
Then again, if he wasn't being sarcastic it's even more funny and still worthy of being dugg for that reason. :-D - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11This is a great feature that Digg should implement themselves, if for no other reason than it would be easier to identify submissions as blog posts about stories or direct links to actual stories.
That being said, I'm not getting a token. I don't need a token to use the "Google Preview" extension. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I don't mean to be a jerk but honestly I've never seen the advantage of thumbnails of screenshots of web pages. I've seen that kinda thing in different sites in different uses and it's never really enticed me to click on anything. Just my own personal taste.
- jmz635, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Haven't you guys ever heard of catch-all / disposable email accounts? Sheesh, I though you guys knew everything.. You sure act like it..
- cgseller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10yeah - signing up for a token is too much intrusion for my blood. Just not enough bang for my buck.
- rejectpenguin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Interesting but doesnt it violate diggs copyright like digggames?
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Seriously, I don't want to give this clown my email address. Even asking for that is too much.
- xose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I didn't signup. It's too easy to "OMG H4X!" it :-P
But really, if you want more users remove the signups. - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -2/+9Digg don't mind you using the icon, they provide all the images you can use on one page: http://digg.com/tools/buttons
- logicslayer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Dude if I didn't have to register at one more damn site just to use this plugin i'd probably use it.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Some sites Digg links to are NSFW. This might help some figure that out before they click."
....
So option 1: Decide whether or not a link is safe to click at work.
Option 2: Have a thumbnail of obscene material automatically shown for me at work. Plus, have the browser make background requests to whatever site is being thumbed, which the corporate firewall will pick up.
Hm... I think not. - daborg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That's pretty much my thought. Interesting idea but not something I want to register for.
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I need a token...uh, no thanks...uninstall.
- argus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This will add to the Digg effect if every user gets a thumbnail from the originating site.
- Roykirk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Sorry. I never had to register for any of the other extensions I use, so I don't see why I need to on this one.
And it's not compelling enough to tempt me to change my mind. - Krispy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I enjoy not having previews
- truck87bp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If an Extension is not in the Mozilla Extension List, I won't install it. Must be APPROVED !
- andrewtr89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6good idea. too much trouble to just see screenshots though.
- jvicinanza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Register to use a Firefox PLUGN IN??? Ha Ha no thanks. Good luck through.
- daborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ahawks: lol good point except that the browser wouldn't be making background requests to the site in question, it would be making background requests to the DiggThumbs site network.
(Correct me if I'm wrong.) - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am not signing up for this. It makes Digg look just like Netscape. :)
No, I'm really not signing up for this. "Signing up" being the keywords here.
Digg should add this feature, as well as quite a few others. I have no doubt there will be a Digg v4 eventually. - itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You know, maybe I am not alone, but when I saw 'digg thumbs' I thought it had picture of a thumb up and another of a thumb down you can click on. Yeah real thumbs, pretty cosmetic.
Is this a bad idea? - r3neGaDe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6just put in 12345678 as the token, it worked for me. It's a cool feature, I agree that I should not have to register an extension tho.
Works in Firefox 2 Beta 2 btw, for anyone who was curious. I don't know about the install because I used Nightly Tester Tools to force the install. - TechHerder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8ok, if you would like to try out the extension without registering simply put the word 'token' in the token field.
This token will last for 24 hours and you can decide if it's worth registering after that.
Have fun! - daborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah that was another thing that struck me as I visited the page. Why are they not linking to a mozilla page where you can download the plugin? Why try to get you to download it from their page? I'm sure it's nothing but laziness, but it just makes it less attractive.
- xose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Make it easier to get a token (ask for email only, for example), or even remove the token system altogether. You'll get advertised enough thanks to the extension, no need to force users to register if they don't want to.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"We would appreciate it if you shared any changes you make with the community."
...and your email. - TechHerder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7We have provided something free for the digg community. How is this spam?
The whole point of the token system was to prevent abuse.
We have disabled the tokens for now, so go ahead and beat it up for a while, when it starts to get abused (of course it will, it's a free service on our bandwidth), we will re-enable them. - Inbal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3TechHerder,
Your attitude is just ugly. We understand you're trying to cover expenses, and it's true nobody is forced to use your service, but you also weren't forced to build it in the first place, and I assume you built it to be used. If people are telling you that a certain aspect of your service makes it useless for them, just try to fix it as much as you can, instead of telling everybody off. It's called "feedback", not a "complaint".
Honestly, what reason does anybody have to trust you with their e-mail? - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hmmm true. Good point, although personally I'm not usually at the NSFW sites posted here. I can admit that's an advantage though. Another advantage I just thought of is that if site is ridiculously ad-ridden I can tell from the screen shot.
See, digg comments have made me into a better person! - theundone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Same here. You're not the only one. We'll just have to wait for them to fix it, I guess.
- graywave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4where's the Greasemonkey script? ;-)
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Stupid sign up!
"DiggThumbs will be uninstalled when Firefox is restarted" - wildthing202200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't install this extension, I click to install it and I end up with the code instead of the usual plug-in install screen.
- goblindegook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nice, now you can see the site and still not RTFA.
- AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4good this will help me for mistakeing a blog for a real website. i hate blogs
- lonewalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Copyright issues i think, even web sites like archive.org get sued for archiving pages.
Screenshots might not be very different in this case - Endpoint, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's be even nicer if when you clicked on the image it showed you a full version of the screenshot in a lightbox kind of way; especially useful for those NSFW pages! :-D
