- brianpeiris, on 11/19/2008, -2/+7Dear Google,
Please buy Twitter and put it on your distributed servers.
Seriously, it's almost 2009 - scalability should be a solved problem. - theOster, on 11/19/2008, -3/+8i find it great for short att...ooh look! (runs outside)
- orlyfactor, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4Why is this even a story...?
- KeithBarrett, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4In recent months I have moved from a very casual user of twitter to main stream. However these outages (why is delete always down when I make an error, why is search always down when I have time to use it) are extremely frequently, lengthly, and uninformative. Twitter is now at the point where it can take off big time, yet it can't handle the reliability of it's normal services to existing users.
It also needs badly missing features:
- The ability to add a person as a friend without being forced to follow them. There are people I want to track ot demonstrate a relationship to, but their actual tweets are clutter to my stream.
- A GOOD flash badge where you can control the font size during generation. All those people that were trying to put that badge on sites where only flahs would work (like myspace) were forced to use a badge no one could read
- Filter options.- maybe I want to see tweets from ThinkGeek only when the word "Jedi" is mentioned, or maybe I never want to see a "Paris Hilton" reference ever again.
- Groups (or flocks). I'd like to have separate work and friend feeds, - cgibbo, on 11/19/2008, -3/+7Second that.
- arjie, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Look at the bright side. It wasn't Twittr.
- n3demonic, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2A ... failpillar perhaps? Hahahahaha... ha...

- imasuperDOTcom, on 11/19/2008, -3/+5Did anyone get "Twitter is down" from that fail whale crap?
- InorganicMatter, on 11/19/2008, -1/+3This is what happens when you jump to Ruby on Rails in a kneejerk reaction because it's cool and shiny, and don't quite think the transition through all the way.
Why they are using Mongrel in a heavy-load production environment escapes me. Ever heard of Apache? mod_rails? - ultrafez, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2We carry our harpoons!
- jiqiren, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2they just want to sell more tshirts
- ceramufary, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Indeed. One of the commenters at the link bemoans "How could this possibly happen?" as though 'twere of dire, nay cataclysmic, scale.
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -1/+2They should just have a picture of McCain
- satrac, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1hi InorganicMatter, you are absolutely right ruby on rails is notorious for caving under heavy load however, I never heard of what they are using behind in their infrastructure. If its ruby I feel sorry for them.
- kismetropolis, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1TweetDeck lets you pick people and group them. It's an Adobe AIR application.
- Zippo, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1The twitter caterpillar is all off-kilter.
- nkassi, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1So you went out an pick up a book on rails and figured you could build a site of Twitters size with the hindsight. I congratulate you. When they started, mod_rails didn't exists. Who knows what they use now. And they have stated multiple times, Rails isn't the issue.
- PhoenixTril, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1First tweet on the page: "Ear there any bi fems in portland oregon here"
Classy. - arjie, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Twit-pic? Wow, that's a smart domain name. Does it host only annoying pictures?
- InorganicMatter, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I never said Rails was the problem. Twitter jumped onboard the Rails while it was still an underdeveloped technology without all the kinks worked out. That's kneejerk.
The point stands: Twitter's developers are morons. These are the kind of hotheadded programming clowns who include "Cool Open Source Web Browser 0.0.1-prealpha" in a major release of a prestigious Linux distro (looking right at you, Canonical). - bluethundr, on 11/19/2008, -1/+2a good alternative to twitter is Upoc. Upoc stands for "Universal Point Of Contact". Works just like twitter, just less downtime! It was even founded with money from the same investor who started twitter! It just never caught on as much as twitter did, but it's just as good.
http://upoc.com/ - Zippo, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Alternatively, the killer caterpillar.
- revjustin2, on 11/19/2008, -2/+3..and you would have gotten away with it, too if it wasn't for those meddling kids!
- arjie, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1It appears they have a bug.
- mxpxpx, on 11/19/2008, -6/+6more like caterFAILliar
- RudeTurnip, on 11/19/2008, -2/+2But, but...how will I follow the rantings and whereabouts of my favorite Web 2.0 celebrities? EVERYBODY PANIC!!!
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1I do not know when someone over there is going to finally understand this:
MYSQL IS *NOT* FOR HEAVY INSERT APPLICATIONS! IT DOES NOT SCALE LIKE THAT! IF YOU WANT FREE AND GOOD FOR THAT, USE POSTGRESQL. I swear to god I don't know why people still keep using MySQL for this stuff. It's awesome for holding blogs and so forth, but peaks of 7,000 inserts per second, no. - roflbrothel, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1How the ***** is this on frontpage? Damnit Digg, cut this ***** out!
- XtheXlanternX, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1Who owns Twitter? If it isn't a huge company (like Google or Newscorp or something), are there companies who have made offers? Thanks!
- kismetropolis, on 11/18/2008, -2/+1I think the LJ downtime is what took Twitter down today.
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -5/+3You see I never seem to get those fail messages anymore because I quite using Twitter 6 months ago.
- Testiculese, on 11/19/2008, -8/+4Twitter? Tweeting? A name as monumentally retarded as that can stay down.
- Santiak, on 11/19/2008, -6/+1Whaling anyone?
