- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -7/+83The only way to stop this is for all the young people, especially ones who are too busy with life to care about politics, to go out and vote in every election. Lets start to make a difference. It matters!

Iran wasn't always a threat, in fact they were a great ally not that long ago. We even started their Nuclear program all before the Iranian Revolution.
see - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_program_of_Iran
on a side note I wonder if this will be modded down because it appears "Anti-American" to those who are so ignorant of our own nations history. - AHIGHERGOD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31That's our job, The People. But for some reason Americans dont care....enough......yet.
- thepharmacist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Your government only has to designate them as terrorists, and that militia will be history. Besides, what could they do ? Kill the president ? Kind of extreme and not really possible.
edit: I just noticed I said "kill the president" on the internet.... I wouldn't be surprised to see SWAT teams arriving any time now. - cheeseron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Maybe because this stuff actually matters to the world.

- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19> when hasn't the govt. done whatever the hell they want??
That's the whole point of separating the judicial branch of the government from the executive branch of the government. Nixon resigned because he knew he couldn't do "whatever the hell he wanted" and get away without being impeached. The judicial branch has legal power over the executive branch, and things like this "secrecy" rubbish are newsworthy because they totally undermine what normally works quite well. - mordain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18panem et circenses

"The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society;
and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret
societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings.
We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive
and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed
the dangers which are cited to justify it."
-- John F. Kennedy - aphexcoil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The United States is a Republic - but I think you will get the point!
How Long Do We Have?
About the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution, in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:
"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship."
"The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;
6. From complacency to apathy;
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage ." - jerwong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Direct press release from EFF: http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/004741.php

- ptbw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14No one cares enough to revolt. Plus, they'd just build more jails to fit all the naysayers, and the people are scared of that. Including me. I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon in our Paris Hilton and Johnny Carson ruled country. No one is interested
- mikeyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Just another example of the bush administration wiping their collective asses with our Constitution.

I thought they renamed it to Wii? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Ah, so using your logic the government cannot be found to have commited any crime or Constitutional violation because the only people that know about it -- the government agents who committed the acts -- aren't talking. Looks like you forgot who the government represents. There's a reason it's a representative form of government, they represent US. In any other case, one could go in front of a judge and subpoena the documents or witnesses, but the government also thinks they're above that. If the judge doesn't think there is enough evidence supporting the investigation, he or she will not grant the subpoena. What's the government afraid of here?
- Kickboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Time for a revolution.

His the only one with the balls to stand up to the White House. If the Democratic party would stand up behind him, he could get things done but they scury to their holes like the cockroaches they are.
He voted agianst PATRIOT Act(only person), War in Iraq, and has called for the censure of Bush and if they get that he want to go for impeachment. And his been trying to get stong Campaign finance reform for the past 10 years but it keep getting thrown out a one step or another. Over 90% of his campaion money comes from individuals not PACs or Business. - hankyone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12yea, what is the point of a constitution if your can modify it to fit your needs
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Whats sad, at this point the rebulicans have pissed off the usa, and if the democrats have some idiot run he will win, so i am hoping for a good independant or democrat. I dont see why independants dont win more often? why vote for someone based on party? Nader for life! i hope he runs, he could win this time, people are sick of bush, Nader could undo all that bush has done, at this point I would Vote Gore, he really didnt seem that bad
- lefthandedlinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10anymore i have lost complete confidence in the US Government, and someone says get out and vote? HAH! i say, consider the fact that Dibold voting machines are worse than an unpatched MS-Windows box and easily exploited with a laptop or PDA, (blackboxvoting.org) i think the entire executive branch of the US Government is corrupted beyond any redemption and it would tickle me to see the US Armed Forces to march in to Washington DC and toss the president & admin and the senate and congress out and start over from scratch.
- QACJared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Sounds Like Richard Nixon.
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9geekee is right. FDR was almost a dictator. Just like Bush. Just like Lincoln, for that matter.
However, that doesn;t mean that it is right. FDR's dictatorial streak is one reason we have term limits for the presidency.
Bush's shennanigans mean that it is time to take the power of presidents and the government in general down a few notches.
But I am not an optimist. If change comes, it may well be violent revolution this time. - jgreath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Or, maybe instead of running, we can stick around and fight, maybe change this country for the better. Perhaps you bleeding heart conservatives are the problem. If you'd prefer to live in a country where the government has complete and total authority to do as it pleases, regardless of what that nation's constitution has set forth as basic rights, then move to ***** Cuba.
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11People forget that Iran is ruled by a theocracy, Iraq was completely different because Saddam was secular. Think about it, do you know how much ***** we would be in if we even attacked Iran? We attack one ayatollah, he sends a million men to fight, we attack another, that one sends a million more. U.S. army planes will be working around the clock to bring all the soldiers back in coffins.
I hate to sound so pessismistic, but that is the trouble waters we are in. Iran isn't a nation to mess with, and whoever even thinks that we went into Iraq to get Iran must have been the dumbest son of a bitch on the face of this planet. Whoever thought of the war plan understand how powerful Islam is in Iran and the trouble we have had with Iran since the Iranian hostage crisis.
What do we have now? We have North Korea firing long range missiles. How is that protecting our nation anymore?
Iraq was a distraction, that allowed us to turn a blind eye to these other "axis of evils" who managed to kick start everything we feared they would start. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Watch the trailer here:

I just get the feeling that everything we are going through has happened before - everything:
- knowing that we are slipping into something bad, between a rock and a hard place
- knowing that things like this have happened before and we must learn from history but seeing it happen anyway
- getting the feeling that one or even two parts of society are becoming increasingly suspicious
- wondering if certain leaders will ever actually leave office
- wondering what other people are thinking
- starting to actually see people who don't vote like us as traitors or a growing problem
- actually wondering if you should accept some loss of liberty - because it will stop the bombs going off
- people actually saying the above with a completely straight face
- realising that actually yes, the police _can_ now hold you for a couple of weeks without charge
- saying to yourself "thank god im not dark skinned and don't have a big beard"
- being torn when you see dark-skinned bearded guys raided and shot because on the one hand you know they must be guilty of _something_ but on the other hand you know that there are plenty of racist police officers. - warox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Apathy? Mordain answered why nobody cares: panem et circnses, bread and circuses, the Latin saying for the mob entertainment of Rome. It's so easy for the government to divert us now, and people tend to be easily diverted. Uncle Sam keeps us busy with McDonald's, American Idol, and Gay Marriage. People don't care about corruption or the erosion of their privacy, they care about whatever ***** government and mass media feeds us. And you wonder why the gov't supports all these broadcast and media cartels, they supply the panem et circenses. History repeats itself yet again, and a dying empire fails to realize it's own failings.
Good use of vocab, mordain, hope you get dugg back up.
Edit: I never answered what we do to solve it.... Stay informed and tell everyone you know of your opinions. Be an outspoken advocate. I don't know how much one person can help, but I hope that motivated advocates across the country will make a difference. Somehow, the republicans managed to accuse the democrats of not supporting our troops while attacking a war veteran's record to favor election of someone who hadn't left the country in military service.
I'm not sure how it happened, but it involved wearing flip-flops on hands. - SpyDerMann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The government is essentially digging their own grave. Why? Because if they're above the law, it means that to serve justice, people will have to BREAK the law. Good work, government. You just pressed the self-destruct button. Now it's only matter of time.
