- Spanq, on 11/07/2009, -0/+24Everything I need to know except when it's coming out. And what the ***** is this Dragon Age ***** plastered all over the background. Really, Digg? Six ads isn't enough?
- killerbob2323, on 11/07/2009, -4/+13I got my droid this morning. Thing is amazing!
My bro has an iphone and he even thinks the droid is better.
I am actualy posting this with my droid. - yocouchdigga, on 11/07/2009, -5/+14A physical keyboard is an absolute MUST, you're out of your damn mind.
- thegamingguy, on 11/06/2009, -2/+10Looking at maybe getting the Droid today.
- UKLooney, on 11/07/2009, -0/+8They didn't mention that the current HTC G1 handsets (over 1/2 million sold) can't be upgraded to 2.0 due to memory constraints... And that Samsung have no plans to provide upgrades for their current handsets (only 2 months on the market, and folk with 2 year contracts) past version 1.6.
- hank22, on 11/07/2009, -0/+8Wheres the story?......................... can't see pass all these ads!
- lydiasky, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7Let me know what you think!
- AngelBunny, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6Ironically my current phone died yesterday night. I'm with sprint (still have over a year left on my contract) and am interested in getting an android phone. Does the HTC Hero (isn't that what it is called?) or samsung motion (or whatever it is called) support upgrading to android 2.0 or are they stuck at 1.6?
I know, noob question but a legit one. - electrichead, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6Have you not noticed how scrunched up the text is when you are two levels deep? It's a bit ridiculous. At the very least, the ad should disappear when you reload.
- thesportoflife, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6***** off.
- Battlecry, on 11/07/2009, -0/+51.6 was too big to fit on the G1, too, but they made it work. They'll do the same with 2.0. Every android phone will get a version of 2.0.
And even on the off chance that we won't get an OTA update of 2.0, there's plenty of ROM hackers out there that will give it to us in one form or another. That's what's great about android. - xelloss, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5Loving my Droid I picked up today, came from a BB Pearl so its a huge difference. The screen is awesome so sharp and clear and touch screen and touch keyboard works nicely, and love Gmails app sync with contact (and Google's voice recognition works incredibly). The physical keyboard is nice, but I wish it as centered with the phone rather then offset to the left when holding it widescreen and just did away with the arrow dpad thing. That's my only complaint though so far. Also had to buy the GPS car unit should get that Tuesday. If you don't want AT&T and need a phone I would have to recommend this phone.
- Cyberdactyl, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4If this the new digg. . .
<<----------------------------------------------->>
maybe it's time find a new website aggregate. - belfastbiker2, on 11/07/2009, -1/+5You people talking about the positive reviews, have you NOT readjust how ***** the autofocus and in general camera is?
- reiggin, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4I'm not usually an early-adopter but the plethora of positive reviews has won me over. Just ordered mine online 30 min. ago.
New Every Two discount + my company's Verizon discount program = $99 ($107, including tax) shipped, no rebates & no fees.
Couldn't pass that up. Should be here Monday. - robojerk, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4It has multi-touch. A lot of review sites are getting this just plain wrong. It just doesnt do pinch zoom.
http://androidandme.com/2009/11/phones/idont-do-pi ... - cowninja, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3I got one to replace my ADP1 and am very impressed. I especially like the new screen resolution.
- mogydy, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3if you want a nice android 2.0 phone without a keyboard, check Sony Ericsson's Xperia X3, full specs and image on gizmodo's site http://bit.ly/12aCK9
- silentsammy, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3My wife just picked one up yesterday. She loves it... very cool phone
- robojerk, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3You just grasping now for reason to bash the phone. You obviously didn't know it had multi-touch and now 4 minutes later you say the multi touch is weak in comparison to the competition.
Have you atually used the phone.. I doubt it. Troll else where. - dragossh, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2Get the Droid Eris, it will be upgradeable to 2.0.
- Swingdown, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2HTC said on their twitter feed that they will be updating the Hero to 2.0. Not sure about the Samsung Moment. I have the Hero and I love it.
- relvlix, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2I ordered the cliq(dext) today due to tmobile contract, I do hope it gets the eclair update.
- freediverx, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Don't get me wrong... The droid is a nifty phone, and would be downright revolutionary - if it had come out two years ago and there had never been an iPhone. But there IS an iPhone and it's quite obvious which is the superior product and who is playing catch-up.
I also hate AT&T's service. But I can't say I'm a fan of Verizon's policies. Let's not forget that they had the opportunity to carry the iPhone but turned it down because they insisted on fully controlling the branding, interface and price structure on the device. Now they are forced to make concessions in order to offer something - anything - that at least comes close to the iPhone.
I lash out against the droid in large part because of the extremely misleading advertising behind it. - freediverx, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Poor analogy. We're not talking about advertising equating product ownership with bliss. We're talking about touting one product as superior to another based on a specific list of features or lack thereof while leaving out far more important details.
Is it all "just marketing"? Perhaps. But even there, Apple marketing "seduces" while others merely "deceive". It ultimately comes down to laziness and incompetence.
History has shown Apple products to be vastly superior to competing products with seemingly equal or superior "spec sheets." Apple's success stems in large part from their focus on the user experience before during and after the product purchase - something their would-be competitors still fail to grasp. - dagamer34, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Every Droid owner knows the best thing about the phone is the screen. Once you take a look at that bright, 263 DPI screen, you'll wonder why your still carrying around your POS phone and haven't switched already.
- dagamer34, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2Keyboardless version is coming next year. But really, I think the keyboard helps when you need it. And you have to realize that it's still the same dimensions as the iPhone and ways maybe 30 grams more.
- binaryloop, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1The original HTC phone was called "Dream". T-mobile renamed it to the G1.
- JJNam, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1The big one I didn't see talked about was the lack of voice dialing via bluetooth. My 2 year old Moto had that feature and I just assumed the Droid would. I was wrong. It's still a fantastic phone, but with hands-free laws these days, I just don't understand what they were thinking.
- robojerk, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Then why did CNet declare the iPhone to be the worst "phone" in the world?
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/0,39029453,4930375 ... - jv2k, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1You can download a better camera on the market. They even have the ability to zoom.
- ReinMasamuri, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Why do the phone companies need to set up the upgrades? I thought Android was set up so that it would have a very simple API and that hardware connections to the software backend would be a minimal process, and practically non-existent if the phone already has an Android distro...
- cschoeps, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1I've replaced my Samsung Sway four times...
I need to make it break so I can demand a new phone. - freediverx, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1...here's a quote from the article you referenced:
"[The iPhone's] the best handheld computer there is. Web browsing is a revelation, it's a fantastic music- and movie-playing iPod, and it's easy as pie to install thousands of apps that do everything from editing your photos to tuning your guitar. And unlike its competitors, its responsive touchscreen and crystal-clear user interface make tapping away on the iPhone a real pleasure." - SPECOPS, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1You also better know you can't be on any sort of data and start/take a phone call at the same time - so much for multitasking---- wait for the LTE version.
- keylime48, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1I was going to jump ship from AT&T and iphone for the Droid and Verizon, until I learned that it has a tiny 256 mb app space. Why cripple such a beautiful piece of hardware with such a ridiculous limit? This is supposed to be a cutting edge smartphone, but it's got the memory capacity of first generation PDA.
I'll stick with iphone until Droid 2. - jshabad00, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1They actually run 1.5 with the CDMA support backported.
- robojerk, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1I hate coca-cola for the same reason. Their very misleading about tying coca-cola to happiness. Go Pepsi!
- bitbytebit, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1it looks like you can't put it in your pocket with that angled bottom. how do you carry yours?
- darkened, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1I have the camera on my G1 from upgrading to Cyanogen, I think the new camera is great and auto focus flawless. I don't know why people are complaining about it. Unless it's something they enhanced in the cyanogen rom.
And @macslut App2SD native inclusion in Cyanogen rom FTW. - reiggin, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1@freediverx....
11) My plan for two phones is $120 and includes 1400 minutes for two phones, 500 text and pic messages plus unlimited In Network texts and pics, and Unlimited Email and Web browsing. I compared the plans and I'd pay a lot more with AT&T.
12) Buy it online and there's no mail-in rebate.
14) And where did you see no visual voicemail??? Wrong. It's an option right there when you buy the phone. $2.99 a month, which sucks, but it is available. - macslut, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2How about the fact that there's only 256MB of internal RAM available for applications on the Droid, and Android doesn't allow applications be store on the SD card. Some developers may be able to get around this by storing most of the application as data on the SD card, but that means apps will look like they're present, but won't run without that SD card installed...and swapping the SD card means turning off the Droid and removing the battery first.
- jv2k, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1They told us it will be able to run flash and Flash is heavily based on 2.0.
- 4everMoore, on 11/07/2009, -3/+3the droid is sweet! but the next wave of htc androids are gonna make the moto droid look like an lg voyager in comparison lol. (not to mention how hack-able they'll be) just wait and see ;-)
- andyroo316, on 11/07/2009, -3/+3I couldn't care less about cameras on phones. I rarely take photos. So I tend to skim over those parts of reviews and thus - this looks like a great phone I wanna see in the store and if it holds up to the reviews, I'll be getting one.
- freediverx, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1#1, CNet is *****. These flunkies have never been known for their insightful, technical reporting. They are well known to give favorable reviews of ***** products (hello, Microsoft?) from big advertising clients.
Having said that, the article you referenced is actually an indictment of AT&T's ***** service - not the iPhone itself. I live in South Florida, and the call quality and dependability here are adequate if not fantastic. The iPhone's features and quality vastly outweigh the occasional service inconvenience. Now for people in San Francisco or NYC, the network issue is more significant. If I lived in either of those cities I might find it more difficult to tolerate AT&T.
CORRECTION: The article is from CNet.UK so the service issue is with O2, apparently AT&T's twin in the UK. Same difference, though - it's a network capacity problem, which is not the phone's fault. - thedowd, on 11/07/2009, -1/+0just use adblock... right click and block the "skins" as a wildcard and bam, solid black backing where the annoying ad used to be.
- freediverx, on 11/07/2009, -4/+3I don't get what's so great about this phone.
1) It's bulky and kinda ugly
2) the physical keyboard feels cheap and flimsy, is difficult to type on, and doesn't have auto-correction
3) running multiple apps simultaneously will kill the battery life and slow performance
4) Verizon network technology doesn't allow use of voice and data simultaneously
5) only 256mb of storage space for apps, which is non-expandable. and no, you can't install apps on a memory card. (a single iphone app might need more space than that, which makes you wonder how feature-rich the droid apps can be.)
6) limited app library
7) "5mp camera" takes crappier pictures compared to iPhone's lower res camera.
8) music and video playback features suck
This review sums it up:
http://www.suntimes.com/technology/ihnatko/1864473 ... - freediverx, on 11/07/2009, -3/+1i don't know what you mean by multi-touch, but clearly the droid's touch interface is nowhere near as sophisticated or easy to use as the iPhone's. This is probably most evident in the map and web browser apps.
The droid requires you to use zoom buttons and/or double tap, which means you can't control the zoom level fluidly or precisely. - andyroo316, on 11/07/2009, -4/+1No *****. Just like you can't put Windows 7 and/or Snow Leopard on crappy old machines that can't handle them. Next!
