- HyperHacker, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20Of course! I've been looking for a way to link DRM and global warming. :-)
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12What are you talking about? Are you being sarcastic? There's really isn't much hardware that's incompatible with Linux. It's actually the other way around. Microsoft is notorious for dropping support of drivers. Further, I can run a decent system off of old equipment with Linux. Microsoft on the other hand always seem to require more and more hardware upgrades to run effectively.
- natedouglas, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Long live GNU/Linux and Anarchism!
Comparing Linux to political movements is great, because anyone can see elements of their own philosophy in it. The gift economy of anarcho-communism, the meritocracy of capitalism, the guiding force of enlightened fascism, and the sharing aspect of socialism. Kinda makes you feel warm and fuzzy. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11open source software uses less energy than vista.
- einfeldt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10IMHO opinion, Free Open Source Software is something that is a tool. Anyone can use it to support their cause. Lots of Republicans and Libertarians support Free Open Source Software, too. Examples: Raymond Lane of SpikeSource supports both Free Open Source Software and George W. Bush. Eric S. Raymond is a gun-toting Libertarian, and he supports Free Open Source Software. So I think that it is a good thing that these leftist, progressive, and liberal groups are supporting Free Open Source Software, too. It just shows how much of a really big tent Free Open Source Software is.
- forteller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9This is not FUD. Have a look at A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection:

Yes, free software is generally less expensive than software you have to pay for. Thanks for pointing that out. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8wow. this is such important news. good thing we have digg to filter out all the noise and bring me stories like this.

DRM and Vista are bad for you, the environment, and the public. Join the Green Party, New Internationalist, Friends of the Earth International, People and Planet, the Free Software Foundation, and the DRM Elimination Crew by signing a statement that rejects DRM, Vista, and encourages the adoption of free software.
Vista was engineered from the ground up as a Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) and Treacherous Computing (TC) platform. This makes unnecessarily steep hardware requirements for users. As a result, Microsoft has taken a disposable computer mentality, forcing users to buy new computers if they want to run Vista.
What's worse is that Vista is designed to monitor what people do, and to limit what they can do with digital media files. These limits obstruct common and legally protected uses like sharing news story clips and copying text from government documents.
In solidarity,
Josh, John, Peter and the DRM Elimination Crew."
Summary:
Vista was created to ruin lives because it's able to support DRM.
Seriously, DRM sucks, but some of these claims are just silly. They're pinpointing all these companies that have had to support DRM due to laws and/or partnerships as opposed to pinpointing and really pushing the companies that ARE producing the DRM media to stop. - Waterrat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5 Yes it is. ive used Linux on old hardware...And ive found it's just as good on new hardware.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Any one may see the source code, thus any one has the ability to improve the software. With this software there is no monopoly on support. Should a new feature be wanted, ANY ONE can be hired to take the source code and implement that feature. Free Software CREATES not just more jobs but a whole new job market.
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I been using Linux exclusively for over 5 years, and I can say that I never ran into a driver issue so serious that I couldn't use a piece of hardware. Yeah I may spend a few hours getting things to work, but this is usually during downtime in which I was going to watch t.v. anyway. Further, when I buy my stuff I just do a quick compatibility check to make sure everything will work.
- arevolutionof1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Unlike MS, who forced vendors to include Windows exclusively on every computer they sold. And who limit your freedom to do what you want with digital media. You mean like that kind of coercion and force?

Well, the "bad for the environment"-part might be FUD, unless people actually buy new hardware just to run Aero on Vista, if they could get the same effects on their current hardware with Linux and Compiz Fusion.. - killercow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Security is hardly obtained by allowing a third party to sign the documents you created, now does it?
If you want security there are plenty of other options who work perfectly without depending on some thin veil of security that just kind of poored from the DRM machine protecting disney's content. (whichhas been getting hacked before you can say "security" over and over again) - drachemorder, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6This is just more fodder for the "Free Software is Communist" crowd. I don't really care if left-wing organizations like Free Software, but as for me, I'm not a liberal, I like open source, and I hate Microsoft; the support of these groups means little to me, and indeed is counterproductive to a degree because it just reinforces the conception I get from a lot of my friends (who are also conservative, but like Microsoft) that open-source is somehow inherently anti-conservative. It isn't, of course, but it's hard to argue that point when all the left-wing groups seem to be getting on board with it.
- hadees, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4While I would like people to use linux instead of Microsoft crap I don't really understand why Environmentalists would care if the software is free or not. It has nothing to do with the environment.
In fact I think even being in this discussion hurts their case because it feeds into their critiques who say they are interested more in social change and use environmentalism as a tool towards that end. - hackerb9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm not a conservative, but I totally agree with you that this "support" is a bit counterproductive. Free Software shouldn't be a left-wing or right-wing thing. If anything, it should be seen as an American ideal: Freedom to do what you like so long as you don't trample on other people's freedoms.
I think we should try to strike a balance by encouraging "right-wing" groups to also get on board. (Anybody here a member of the National Rifle Association? I think they'd understand the true meaning of "free".)
--b9 - killercow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3And you truly beleive this in your personal best interest?
An monopoly is never a good idea, they've proven that numerous times. - Fartag, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Technological progress saves lives everyday. But look at the biggest possible example, suppose the AI-driven singularity point starts up tomorrow and maybe nearly all of our lives could be saved! Regardless of when it occurs, the amount of time saved or wasted now directly affects where that point lies in our future.
Holding back technological progress seriously damages us all. If the singularity point (e.g.) is delayed for just one year then over 50 million additional people will die. If it's a mere few decades off then maybe many of our parents could make it, a few more and maybe we could make it, our kids, our grandkids, etc. That kind of thing should make tech advance very personal to knowledgeable geeks with the ability to push tech forward. Improvements in many fields can easily save lives in the future and improve things overall.
The fact that MS has continually attempted (with a great deal of success) to hold back and control technological advance puts them in a bad light in my book. The same with anything involving non-private information restriction, incorrect information and misinformation (DRM, religion, indefinite copyright, software patents, etc.). Who knows how many years we've wasted? - norman619, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Wow! How did you get driver issues from my post? You even read it? The reason I can;t move to Linux is the lack of applications I can use to get work done. Sorry but I am not going to be able to talk my employers into changing from industry standard apps to open source. Ain't gonna happen. I also freelance as a 3D modeler and animator. Guess what? The tools I use are not found on Linux. These, again, are industry standard tools. Plus the lack of current games is bitch too. You can go ahead and stick it to the man all you like. I will stick with an OS which allows me to keep using applications I need to use to make a living and have fun.
- Hamish150, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3This story is right on.
Free-software rocks!
To hell with Vista! - norman619, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4You are right about the hardware but Linux is hardly a very useful OS since it is severely lacking in software vendor support. That is the biggest thing keeping it from gaining any real market share from Windows. The Linux community should be trying to convince the vendors it's worth while to port their apps to Linux instead of pushing open source apps.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Too bad more often than not OpenSource usually means not good enough to suit my needs.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6You knwo you made it when everyone hates you for pretty stupid reasons.
- Fungyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Haven't seen any examples of DRM security which doesn't impact on consumers rights to "fair use". Also I've noticed the DRM technologies in use are easily broken, some very shortly after its first release.
DRM or "Digital Rights Management" or better still "Digital Restrictions Management" doesn't appear to me as being designed for consumer friendliness or respect. The big companies in the entertainment industry see their rights differently from Laws in most countries. DRM puts unfair and wrongful restrictions on people worldwide regardless of local laws.
DRM also restricts distribution options for independent content creators.
Don't be fooled by DRM being used for security, if you're an average consumer who uses a computer to play their digital media then DRM has an opposite effect to your personal security and actually allows third parties access to your personal information and gives them control over how your computer functions.
If my personal information is leaked and my computer can be controlled by a third party then I would say I've been hacked and my security has been penetrated, I know longer feel in control and safe. - arevolutionof1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Yea ruthless businessmen! Screw weak little companies with better products that we could all benefit from if they can't survive. And screw the environment. I don't want better software, or a planet that will still support life in 50 years. I rather have progress in the form of a bloated slow OS that makes me have to buy all new hardware and limits my freedom. Anyone who claims any different is obviously jealous of Bill. Yea capitalism!
- arevolutionof1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I love the kool-aid too!
- Hamish150, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Anyone who can't see the sense in it, is an *****, plain and simple
