- SG-1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+77The ban is only for anonymous editing, registered users can still edit any article on Wikipedia
- PaulinSaudi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+64All of Saudi Arabia is also on one IP, this allows the Proper Authorities to protect me from the Bad Stuff.
- gamesector, on 10/12/2007, -7/+51Then you're a dumbass.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40I'm beginning to realize why they're anti American thanks to you lego8
- SuperSnake2012, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42A nation of about 840,000 people share one IP address? Pretty strange if you ask me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I'm glad you're blocked. I don't need to hear what you anti-Quatarian bastards say anyway.
- newanon, on 10/12/2007, -11/+43Ha, this is funny, "Please stop changing spelling to the British form, particularly if the article is entitled in American form already."
- NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:127.0.0.1
Check out localhost! LOL! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+39they don't speak English idiot
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Qatar is far from being Anti-American.
- neoknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23That's because the stupid monarchist governments control all telecommunications in and out of most Arab countries. In Qatar as the article says its Qtel, in Bahrain its Batelco, in UAE its Etisalat. All government owned and very very profitable for their investors and shareholders. No other company is allowed to operate a telecommunications company there.
Oh yeah and all internet traffic is relayed through their proxy server so that's why. If I remember right even Skype is banned in UAE. - PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28Chaucer is Old English, and irrelevant.
Wikipedia is biased towards US English because it's hosted in the USA. - jsdratm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15They censored that BBC documentary about sex even though it was dugg to the front page a few times.
- NC17, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18There are more than those 60 million British who spell in the UK English form. Canada/Australia/many non-native-English-speaking countries. Just saying.
Spelling _should_ be kept as the original posting, especially if it matches the subject matter. And of course place names should always be after the dialect of their location. For instance, "Pearl Harbor" is never "Pearl Harbour". - johndi, on 10/12/2007, -15/+28But for to tellen yow of his array,

Beefbaron, you sure ye want to turn the pages back to the original English? That is only about 600 years old, it has changed a lot since. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Actually, chaucer is somewhat modern english, he just lived before standardized spellings. You should hear someone speak real old english. Sounds more like german, and it is completely different from modern english. A better example of old english is beowulf:
Hwæt! We Gardena in geardagum
þeodcyninga þrym gefrunon
hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17lego8- you must be one of the most pig (or should I say piss) ignorant types I've come across on Digg. You obviously do not know that one of the biggest US bases in the Gulf is in Doha. Guess what's the capital of Quatar?
If you're American (and proud to be so), you've just shot yourself in the foot. Perhaps you should now go the whole hog. If you're not American but simpley stirring it up, you're a coward.
Stick to legoland. - ST47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9As of 2 hours ago, they can:

"In a bit of an unrelated note, one time my friend was trying to hack me or something, and he asked for my IP. I told him it was 127.0.0.1. Next day he yelled at me because his little hacker tool deleted his hard drive. I laughed." - eppitek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7good luck registering for free trials
- funkspiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7At first I thought this was a headline from "The Onion".
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sorry to mis-use reply, but this info needs to be at the top:
FROM TFA:
If you came here from a news headline saying that Wikipedia has banned all of Qatar, please pop right back over there and post in the comments that the story is not true. This IP number was temporarily blocked for less than 12 hours, and a block of an entire nation would go absolutely against Wikipedia policy. In the English Wikipedia, such an action would require approval of at a minimum the English Arbitration Committee and/or me personally, and would never ever be undertaken lightly, nor without extensive attempts at direct negotiation with the ISP and/or nation in question.
To any and all reporters, from Slashdot, TechCrunch, mainstream media, etc.: You may email me and ask me for my personal cellphone number, which I wll answer 24 hours a day to confirm or disconfirm any such story of this type. --Jimbo Wales 03:32, 2 January 2007 (UTC) - GerryDaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The 2006 Asian Games were held in Qatar...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"automated censor", it wasn't intentional.
- t1m1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Wrong.
Quote from the link:
"Are logged-in users coming from this IP still allowed to edit? If so then this is only blocking anonymous editing by Qataris. PermanentE 07:43, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
PermanentE, I don't know whether logged-in users can edit because I can't create an account: "Account creation from this IP address (82.148.97.69) has been temporarily restricted. This is probably due to persistent vandalism from the shared IP address you are editing from, most likely from your school or internet service provider." [...]"
So I guess they can't even create an account. - blakholephysics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The link also states that registering from that ip is currently restricted.
- Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6are many Arab countries anti-Israel because Israelis are ignorant? no, it's because their government is anti-semitic and a totalitarian oligarchy. Did Bin Laden attack the U.S. because he hates freedom or Americans are ignorant? No, its because we supported Israel. How do I know? He said so! Learn a little bit more about geopolitical relations before you start haphazardly attacking Americans. You're just as bad as he is.

- Shinta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"stupid monarchist governments"
You'd prefer an Ayatollah? - neoknight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Not that I'm saying that Arabs are bad, just their stupid monarchist rulers are and money hungry individuals which you will find in all corners of the globe. I grew up in the middle east so I know how it is. Other than that they are beautiful countries with warm people.
- Doriath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The "automated censor" referred to in the article is Qtel''s proxy.
"due to the technical workings of an automated censor imposed by the sole national high speed ISP" - mrayyan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is ridiculous, and I did see it coming by the way. By just knowing when I try to download something from a share site I get the following message "You have exceeded your limit from this IP address", so hey there you go!
By the way the price of the QTEL aDSL for 2 mb is about $120 bucks... and of course that is for dynamic single ip address.
Anyway, FYI, qtel is no longer a monopoly company starting from January 1st 2007! yay! - clubmasta2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What about the inacurate crappy wikipedia article making it to the top without people reading it?
- colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg for linking directly to the source.
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They need someone to stand up and help them.
I'll do it, I've been playing Qatar Hero on PS2 - lagnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ipcountries.ch?domain=qatar
- diddy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guys maybe it's not true Jimbo Wales (founder of wikipedia) just replied to my post saying it's not true.

Wikipedia Talk Site for the IP
Please note that it was obviously not my intention to block the entire nation of Qatar. --Yamla 20:10, 1 January 2007 (UTC) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Imagine being able to play online poker with 840,000 users who all have the same IP address.

- alchemista, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does this mean Qataris (and other nations with this) have nothing to fear from RIAA/MPAA/etc? Or do their governments just censor them all out?
- PhilBoswell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good point: by the way, you are always welcome to help out ;-)
- alassiry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a Qatari and I'd like to tell you that every member of my family except my 20 month old has their own PC/Laptop ... yes .. my Father, my Mother, my 2 Brothers (one has 3 laptops and a PC) , my 2 Sisters, myself (1 PCs+1 Laptop), as well as 3 of my kids (aged 10,7,4)....
btw, Qatar is one of the most Tech-developped countries in the region.... so forget about your prejudices... - alassiry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why do you think we're silly?
- zoziw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Please stop changing spelling to the British form, particularly if the article is entitled in American form already."
I think I just found a new hobby! :) - alassiry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems that most MPAA, RIAA action is in the US..
- PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wikipedia is in constant struggle between what I call the forces of light (people who want to make constructive contributions) and darkness (people who want to tear down the contributions - vandalize, deliberately post wrong info, etc). The community is constantly having to decide and mediate between conflicting claims that this or that action is good or bad for the encyclopedia - this comes with the territory, and is the inevitable price for a community-run rather than an expert-driven body of knowledge (which I think is a good thing - that is, community-run is good). But it's all part of the process. And the important thing, I think, is that it continues (which it will). Wikipedia may be the most revolutionary development in the organization of knowledge since the invention of the encyclopedia itself. I have a podcast on some of these issues on my http://paullev.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=145344 - about 8 mins long.
