- Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6American broadband sucks compared to all other countries, except for maybe mexico.
Damn US. How am I supposed to be happy with this crappy 4mb/256kb connection when people in japan nearly have gigabit both ways. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7England ≠ Britain
- *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Haha at "England"
Britain or UK please, how can we forget our friends in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland :) - Standard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here in Vasteras, Sweden we've had 100MB/s for some time now, glad to see the rest of the world is catching on. ;)
I pay $37 for a 100/100 line on the most advanced city network in the world.

Thank you. Full marks. Damn foreigners always trying to make it simple. :)
" (for the US digg users) The top of Eyer-land, Scotshland, Engerland and Walesland "
You forgot London. London is a country too... I think somewhere near England... it's where President Blair lives... and that wrestler Big Ben.
As for 100Mb/s down, I'd be happier with something like 6Mb/s down and 6Mb/s up (or even 2d/2u). You just know that it would end up being something daft like 100down/1up.
I also have to say thankyou to the submitter for using Mb and not MB - 100 MegaBytes per second would be quite interesting compared to 100 Megabits.
(B = bytes, b = bits. Please use accordingly.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i get 100mbps/100 - verizon fios (just get a tech to change your provisioning.. try bribes or offer something they'll never get - eg secks)
- RocketMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"In reply to Odiumjunkie, likewise Britain ≠ UK."
Correct. Britain = The island that England, Wales, and Scotland are on.
Britain + Northern Ireland = United Kingdom (the one country) - zenlunatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think i speak for all of digg when i say HOLY *****
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like I might have to move to England. =P
- jimthetaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha LOL you idiot. Do some research you dick! NTL'S network is ALL fibre. Rigt up to the little grey box that sits on your front wall before t enters the house. Don't comment if you dont know what your talking about you ***** dumbass!
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love how the US is falling further and further behind in consumer broadband speed compared to pretty much the rest of the developed world.
- domokunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah right average max in UK right now is 2mb down 256k up
LOL @ 100mbps - GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1giggins: At this rate, never.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NTL doesn't serve most of the country and those they do have really ***** customer service and uptime. Thanks but I will stick to my 8mb for now thanks
- Arkz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jimthetaff, you cant get fibre to the home, thats what was meant, ofcourse their network its self goes thru fibre, wires would be too slow, unless there were like 1,000,000,000 of them
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What a load of crap, we won't even get the jump to 8Mb in the vast majority of areas of the UK 'til near the end of the year. 100mb on general release is years away"
No, your post seems to be full of crap. 8Mb trials are due to end in April 2k6 after which nationwide release will follow.
You can allready get 8 meg on LLU exchanges of which there are quite a few, some of which also support 24 meg broadband ( https://www.bethere.co.uk/ ) - *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"our cable coms in sweden use docsis 3.0 for 100 mbit :p"
Yes I read NTL plan to use docsis 3.0 for their 100mbit.
"Britain is one of the most expensive places in the world for any type of communications, and internet connectivity is usually on a par with that of Zimbabwe."
You HAVE to be kidding with that statement, right? Average speed is 2mbit, and the vast majority have highly reliable connections. Every ADSL connection I've had has been perfect, never a problem and I've had ADSL for years. In fact I only know one person who has had a problem with it. As for cable, I think most of the problems are due to customer service rather than the technology. - jimthetaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh dear, to the person that said ntl halved their caps, they didn't, get your facts right they doubled the caps 30GB > 75 GB for 10Mb
and to the other person that complains there is no fibre in the uk.... WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK NTL'S NETWORK IS MADE FROM??? FIBRE THAT IS WHY THEY CAN UP THE SPEED AT WILL!
God there are some dumb people walking - edwardfrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They could offer 1Gb up and down, with virtually no latency and for the same price as 1Mb/s elsewhere and it still would not be worth the hassle of dealing with their billing and customer service issues!
- giggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When will 100Mb hit the U.S?
- xile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have 100MB internet, but only running at 1.5Mbit/s it takes 533 seconds to transfer that 100MB.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a load of crap, we won't even get the jump to 8mb in the vast majority of areas of the UK 'til near the end of the year. 100mb on general release is years away
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe.... The cable companies here in England are universally clueless, and "service" is generally appalling. Britain is one of the most expensive places in the world for any type of communications, and internet connectivity is usually on a par with that of Zimbabwe.
- Ltgeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0News Flash!...
Half of Asia already has residential broadband @ 1Gbps! ...We're all getting raped by our telcos and cable companies :( - cakesale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well the highest connection we have here (South Africa) is 1mbit, ***** we are 1337!
- kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldnt get too exited, 100mb required fibre optic infrostructure which we just dont have, asia (in particular korea) has ultra fast broadband because it is a relatively recently developed country.
Anyways id rather have satelite tv and 2mb broadband than have crappy cable! - prateek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wiked, ive got ntl's 10MB at the moment
- sennmen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No offence, but trailing means nothing. As does the caption of this story: "England will have 100MB broadband". Ofcourse Britains will eventually get access to 100mbit. The big question is when, and that was one thing I couldn't find in the article.
@Home has been trailing 100mbit for about two years now in Holland, and I still don't have 100mbit. Don't get your hopes up. - Zildjian285, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BT has now released MaxDSL, so most of the U.K has 8MB has standard...
- anthonypurvis31, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0yeah, lovely if you live in a cable area. but what your all forgetting is the 50 million people or so in the UK who don't get cable or don't live in a cable area ,this is mainly thanks to our friend Mr Rupert Murdoch that evil Australian who for the last 25 years has systematically destroyed the cable operators in the UK by undercutting them with his Sky satellite platform and bribing/holding hostage the central government (he controls Britains 3 biggest selling newspapers) and his American arm FOX wont sell its TV shows and movies to the torrential TV networks. And we all remember the trick he pulled by steeling lost and 24 from the BBC and channel 4. don't expect 100meg for everyone this is after all Britain, and after all nothing works properly here our rail network is a case in point. What wee need is a little competition maybe AT&T or France Telecom should come over and scare virgin media and sky into action
- rudashell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01st comment I see "Shame NTL's technical support is complete and utter wank,......"
agreed. NTL are THE WORST company in the world, their support/billing/serivce is complete crap. Glad to see they finally made it on to BBCs watchdog. ...would be even better if they just sorted themselves out and actually listened to their customers - DuffDemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Expect a severe usage cap and NTL's customer service to treat you like dirt though.
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yey I guess, on another point, England is a country UK isn't, it's a union (I think...) made up of (for the US digg users) The top of Eyer-land, Scotshland, Engerland and Walesland
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I currently get 20mb download and 1mb upload so :)
(I live in Paris) - MKrmec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This kind of news sux. Broadband rules yes we know.
We jst got a provider that is offering 1 gbit/s Optic fibre connection to your hoem but for a not quite nice price 4100$. But the 100 mbit/s costs around 430 $ per month with no BW restriction, no time limit, and so on.... - shaneau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ Duke999R
"Bloody poms.
Down under, we are still waiting for 2mb/s speeds.
This just makes me wanna cry."
That's a shame for you, I live in Australia and have a 24 Mbps/1 Mbps connection and a 10 Mbps/ 128 Kbps connection. Hehe. It all depends on if you live in metro. ;)
I can't see an ISP eager to run lines that can support high speeds out to regional australia anytime soon. Do you have any idea how much that would cost? Australia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world with only 4.3 people per square mile. Compared to England which has 637 people per square mile. - sydtsai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, it has been like a year for the 100Mb connection in HK... :P
- Rxbrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wow, if this works HD torrents will actually become realistic"
That might be why we never see 100/100. Too many people high up don't want to lose money from a DVD sale. It's all about the money. - saddad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm in the US. I'm going to cry. Just to think, only a year ago did the house I live in get broadband...and I live in Silicon Valley. Idiots.
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will my ethernet cables handle so much speed?
- RobSaint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's gotta beat my 2MB BT line. Gimme that 100MB
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH THAT WOULD BE A LOT OF PORN!!!!!!
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got 8Mb down and the last time I saw anything close to that was... well, never. I've got 45Mb down at work and it's just as fast at home as it is at work. I don't know why everyone thinks this is that big of a deal. For both of the times you'll transfer files between other users on the same ISP... well, I'll wait the extra minute.
- krazyjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shame I can't get cable :(
ADSL SUCKS! - ZMorek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish the US wasn't so huge that the cost for infrastructure was so much. Otherwise we'd have sick broadband like south korea and japan, little countries with fat pipes....
- Bonzodog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heh...here in Ireland they have hailed 1Mb service at €40 per month as revolutionary...alot of people are still on dial-pu in fact. Ireland is too rrual to dream of more than 1MB, and thats the cities. The country folk normally have either satellite (€100 p/m), or Wi-Max (512Kb/s). so we will never likely see more than 5MB/s in the cities, and that will be €50 odd p/m.
- osxman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** I only have 3! *****
- HPSauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How many foreigners (not living in the UK) actually say England instead of the UK? It's damn annoying when you get tourists saying, "Well, I'm going on holiday to England this year. I'll be visiting places like London, Cardiff and Swansea Bay!"
Grr... - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0America is quickly becoming the ghetto of the internet thanks to the Republican broadband monopolists who refuse to upgrade their services to global standards and prices. They are extortionists who lie to customers and overcharge for their shoddy service.
Ask why broadband prices in the US have remained the same since the beginning yet the infrastructure has remained largely the same. What are they doing with all the profits from the premium prices they have been charging? $45 for 5Mb/384Kb that barely works as advertized is no longer acceptable! They've had over a decade to get their act together and they still have not! - techgirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0where's my damn fiber to the curb already? sheesh...lucky brits :)
