- ileftfark, on 11/13/2009, -1/+92PROTIP: AT&T's bars on the phone doesn't mean dick. I consistently drop calls or am at least inaudible with full or near-full bars, and can sometimes make perfectly clear calls with one or no bars at all. I think it's a sham to trick us.
reception.indicator="random" - FredFredrickson, on 11/13/2009, -0/+51Apparently it's easier (and cheaper) to sue your competitors for pointing out how ***** your network is, rather than to actually work on the network and make it better.

***** you ATT. all u want is money and dont give anything else in return - dafragsta, on 11/13/2009, -1/+39I agree with ***** ASCII guy.
- Raider007, on 11/13/2009, -0/+23I had AT&T for a couple years when I lived in San Jose... you know, the heart of Silicon Valley, not east ***** nebraska or some remote part of the states... I had so many dropped called it was ridiculous...
switched to Verizon, never looked back. - inactive, on 11/13/2009, -3/+25I love my iPhone. I hate AT&T.
- kaptainchump, on 11/13/2009, -0/+15What's even more amazing is when AT&T's network is overloaded and you try calling an AT&T customer, an error message plays: "We were unable to complete your call at this time" or something along those lines. What I don't like is how the message tries to insinuate that the problem is with your current provider and not their ***** network.
When you call Nextel and the person has their phone off or they are out of service, you hear, "I'm sorry, we were unable to locate the Nextel customer you're trying to call at this time."
Overall I agree with you. When I had Sprint, my phone would never just DROP a call so long as I had at least one bar of service. With AT&T, I can have full bars and my call will just *****' drop for no reason. It happens mostly around peak times (5pm, etc) - ftc08, on 11/14/2009, -1/+16"***** you ATT. all u want..."
A strangely rapid decline in verbal effort. - alabamasucks, on 11/13/2009, -3/+15Damn Cingular ruined a great company! I had great AT&T coverage. I remember calling them "Single-Bar"

AT&T's network pretty much sucks no matter which language you use. - palmer, on 11/13/2009, -2/+13YOU + ARE = YOU'RE
And it's "elsewhere".
You should be busy finishing elementary school instead of posting things on the Web. - Hellicus, on 11/14/2009, -0/+11I'm on AT&T and I almost never drop a ca
- evanft, on 11/13/2009, -2/+8Yeah, you can use the Droid.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 11/13/2009, -3/+8I find it funny that you say "you're going to get comments from AT&T lovers saying they have 0 verizon bars where they live" and then proceed to say exactly that.
And, really, what is it? 1999? I haven't seen someone walking around trying to find bars in years. - emptyo, on 11/13/2009, -1/+6In Denver I can't get through a call without dropping twice.
They've since garnered the nickname "*****&T." - icndvl, on 11/13/2009, -1/+6The Net Generation will have Internet freedom, even if we have to build the network without AT&T.
- proflacroix, on 11/14/2009, -1/+6***** at&t. how do you manage to secure an exclusive deal on the fastest-selling, most popular phone in history and not invest in your service?
the headline is right, stop paying for lawyers and get your ***** together. - madwh, on 11/13/2009, -1/+6I'm kinda tired of this story but I'm glad it's always us the customers that win.
- marksangenito, on 11/13/2009, -1/+6so wait....verizon is auto blocking automated text message spam from companies!?
+1 for verizon! - DivisibleByZero, on 11/13/2009, -0/+5I get "full bars" in my office, but still can't make calls or do anything.
- pdethier, on 11/14/2009, -2/+6Have you ever even used an iPhone? NOTHING comes close to the smoothness of the touch screen. It can distinguish between taps and swipes, every single time. The simplicity is simply unparalleled- one button brings you back to a single screen, where every single feature of the phone is literally a tap away. Back before the iPhone was released, the hottest phones were the LG Chocolate and the Razr. The new player in the market lit a fire up under everybody else's ass. Even if you don't like the iPhone, you have to respect what it's done for the mobile phone segment in terms of expected features.
I'm not much of a fan of this whole "holier than thou" attitude, but you have to admit there really is no phone out there that packages it together as well as the iPhone. - Telexen, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4Hello?
- nerddtvg, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4I never once had a problem when I had Cingular, but once they merged with AT&T and they started doing "upgrades" to the network in the St. Louis area, my calls started screwing up.
- vault, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4Same exact thing here...they are both awful companies to deal with, but AT&T's coverage and service are much better here.,
- krisrm, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4sorry, what was tha
- Kyzzyxx, on 11/14/2009, -1/+5Please. AT&T sucked long before they merged with Cingular
- engelb15, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4We're being dugg down because it's cool to hate on AT&T.
I'm not saying they are a great company, I'm not crazy about them but they don't suck any worse than all the others. - Glisten, on 11/13/2009, -1/+5Every comment here will be made from a different part of the country where one carrier might be stronger than the other. When a large group of people get together to argue about cell phones they always lean towards their own carrier and claim the other one "screwed them over" or some silly thing like that.
Regardless, the ad campaign should be allowed to continue because, in reality, Verizon does have a much larger 3G network. That's all there is to it (and just because it's not in YOUR area doesn't mean it's a tiny network, maybe you should move). - Goph09, on 11/13/2009, -2/+5unfortunately, it costs a lot more to increase coverage with GSM than it does with CDMA
the only way you'll get better coverage is moving to verizon or sprint..it's the technology the company uses, not necessarily the company itself - grnicon, on 11/13/2009, -5/+8engadget has a serious hard-on for Verizon.
I would remind them that Verizon is a Baby Bell, and thus a spawn of the original AT&T. But I wouldn't want to see the fanboys going suicidal over something silly as corporate worship. - ceraphin, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3I have att and it drops calls or gives me a ***** busy network error when i have 4 bars or less. and it's consistent everywhere i go
- MacDreidel, on 11/13/2009, -2/+5AT&T sucks, plain and simple.
The only reason they do so well is because of iPhone/Apple fanboys and girls who think the only choice is an iPhone. It has even gotten to the point where no other phone can be compared to the iPhone, everything is beneath it, which is just silly since as a phone is is not good at all.
I just hope Google, Palm or anyone else (probably Google in my opinion) eventually wipes the floor with the iPhone showing them how to really create a customizable phones with open source apps. And Google is on the right track by offering different phones (but yet similar in terms of OS and some specs) to each carrier.
Apple's biggest mistake is AT&T and they should suffer because of it and the way both AT&T and Apple have conducted themselves lately is just bad to say the least. - deadlikeoscar, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3http://www.gearlive.com/news/article/q409-fix-droi ...
- marksangenito, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3you dont have an app for that?
all kidding aside, i was just being sarcastic...what service are you using to mass text your users? - Glayden, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3AT&T has dropped every single one of my calls in the past few weeks and its not like I'm in the middle of nowhere & on the phone for a long time. (I'm only 20min from Chicago)
Seriously, ***** you AT&T - shwerm601, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2verizon's network in my opinion is superior to all
(and im not a verizon customer)
I give cell companies the "elevator test". Anytime you see someone on an elevator talking you have to ask what service they have because your service never gives you elevator calls. - Swift2, on 11/13/2009, -1/+3I think one of the unstated things about this is that so much of the tech industry lives in and around San Francisco, and they get terrible AT&T reception there, by all that I hear.
My reception in the Glendale-Burbank area is fine. My only problem is taking a call at home, where I drop calls all the time.
Does nobody realize that we should make this a non-issue by standardizing the protocol and enforcing sharing among the networks, like we do with the Internet?
AT&T spent too much money reassembling the old monopoly's brand name, and they've fallen behind in building out a fast network. - Khast, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2If traveling into Canada, Verizon roams to Telus, and Sprint roams to Bell.
- golgotha, on 11/14/2009, -1/+3Keep in mind that if you use Verizon or Sprint, then your phone will be useless if you travel outside of America.
- Khast, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2I use a Canadian Cell phone, because the border town I live in doesn't have any US coverage yet. I am about 1 1/2 miles from the tower A (56th ave), and about 2 1/2 miles from tower B (Tsaww. Ferry). I rarely have dropped calls, and 3G gets 357kbps on average here at home. If it was run like AT&T... they would have only 1 tower to cover this area...
- Spinfusor, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2That's not true. Verizon and Sprint offer a bunch of phones that work worldwide:
http://www.verizonwireless.com:80/b2c/store/contro ...
http://nextelonline.nextel.com/en/stores/intl_phon ... - Corinthos, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2No *****. I didn't know dropped calls still existed until I went back to att last year. Before then I hadn't had one in over 5 years.
- Telexen, on 11/14/2009, -1/+2Are you an idiot? You're really bragging about the iPhone's ability to go back to the home screen with one touch? Every flip phone I've ever owned can do that!
Now, with my Droid, I can one tap to go back to the home screen...and one tap to go back into the app I was in...and not just open "new"...as if it had never closed! Your iPhone can't do that. You would be amazed at what a real smart phone can do when it isn't made by a company is such a control freak that it has to tell you how you can use your phone. - shwerm601, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1total opposite here, cingular's poor service in my area led me to a new carrier.
- radarplane, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Don't know why you're being buried. I dugg you.
BTW, when my iPhone contract is up, I'll be shopping around for the sole reason that I can't get service in a lot of places. I was just in Alabama at a school and got no reception in my room. I had to go outside to talk. I saw other people outside talking...they were all AT&T customers.
I just don't know if there's another phone that I'll like as much as the iPhone. - 6uardianAngel, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1Actually in the settings menu of the iPhone, one can access the search screen any page/application from the iPhone by double clicking the home button.
- dsuse15, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1I have never had as many dropped calls as I have with AT&T. I had nextel for 4 years and verizon for 2 years, I could probably count the dropped calls on two hands. With AT&T I'd say I have at least one dropped call every day. Contracts suck.
- Zindrix, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Engadget might love Verizon's service, but they love their iPhones even more...
- MacDreidel, on 11/18/2009, -0/+1Apple fanboy much?
The iPhone in essence is a pos...mainly because of the network they are on.
May Google in the long run win the smart phone market since they know how to do business better and make a wider range of phone that actually fit what people need. ATT and Apple are starting to look even more M$ than M$. Lets hope a nice lawsuit claiming that iTunes and other iProducts are a monopoly. Then everyone will be able to make devices that use the Apple software/hardware.
Or perhaps Google and M$ should play the same game and remove all their support and apps from Apple and let them figure it all out on their own while the rest of us move ahead without them. So no Exchange support, no Google maps, no Office or anything related to their companies. -
