Ebay is the Investment Bank of Web 2.0

techcrunch.com — eBay is proving to the be liquidity path of last resort for many struggling web startups, or those that simply want to sell out for a few hundred thousand dollars. We've tracked at least six web 2.0 companies who've attempted to sell themselves on eBay over the last year, and four of the six have been put up for sale in the last month.

    Ebay is the *EXIT* strategy for floundering ideas.

    Ebay itself is not investing in these companies. There is a problem with web 2 ideas - they are moslty predicated on the fact that global adoption will require them to be a free service. If you have an idea that is going to be free - you better have a good/compelling idea so that a large amount of users will want to use it - high traffic is the only way to have ad revenue big enough to support operations.

    Its a tough gamble to make. There are plenty of ideas that are great for a niche, but not a free niche. and they go down simply becuase they cant "monetise" the idea enough to keep it running.
