- blackmage439, on 11/29/2007, -3/+27Man, I am so glad I Comcast didn't have a monopoly in my area. I chose Wide Open West over Comcrap, and I couldn't be happier. I get all the non-digital channels I want (plus the Scifi channel, which Crapcast only has in their digital package...), in addition to a 2Mbps/384Kbps Internet connection. I get both for the same price as the basic Comcrap Digital package, with that price guaranteed until 2010.
Screw you, Comcrap. Keep up with your bureaucracy and monopolistic behavior. You're only contributing to your own demise. - kinghajj, on 11/29/2007, -0/+16Wow? There's actually cable competition somewhere? *****, where?!
I don't think I could get along with a 2Mbps connection, though, so I'd probably still have Comcast, but competition is always welcome. - inactive, on 11/29/2007, -0/+13Comcast blocking P2P? Looks like some grandma is going to have to go down there with a hammer.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ... - sdigroup, on 11/29/2007, -0/+13EFF is such an important group. Not afraid of the man.
- latova, on 11/29/2007, -2/+13These companies only do it because they're getting away with it. Someone should make a website that lists all ISPs and gives data on traffic shaping and whatever. It'd certainly impact my decision on an ISP majorly, and definately make ISPs think twice before lying to their customers through their teeth.
- wayne247, on 11/29/2007, -2/+13Who's the retard? 256KB/s is perfectly fine for torrents. In fact, any speed is fine for torrents, it'll only be faster or slower. Amazing isn't it? Anyways, a 2 megabits pipe is more than adequate for frequent downloading and sharing of files.
And about your complaint for people not knowing the differences, maybe you should learn them yourself? It's "megabit", not mbit. Otherwise it's "Mbit", m is capital for mega. - Gogara, on 11/29/2007, -0/+11@buba
Read the first two comments. See how they were surprised that there was, ahem, competition? Say we had that list. Now what? Who do you switch to? Comcast is the only choice for a lot of people. Monopolies are bad mmkay - buba69, on 11/29/2007, -2/+12If you are a software designer/programmer....how can you bring yourself to create these types of traffic shaping programs? You must be getting tons of $$$$ and probably getting your own comcast service for free...
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -2/+11Class action lawsuit........some attorney is gonna get paid.
- SteveMax, on 11/29/2007, -2/+10It's far from complete (or being totally accurate), but http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs is a start.
- RedHerringHack, on 11/29/2007, -0/+7How can we hurt comcast the most? They need some pain.
- Chirp08, on 11/29/2007, -1/+7Tip: don't major in statistics. you fail.
- flahavin, on 11/29/2007, -0/+6So I don't have a right to free open-source operating systems like Ubuntu that are 100x better than Microshaft WinBlows?
http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ubuntu-7.10-deskto ... - shredswithpiks, on 11/29/2007, -1/+7this is a good troll
- ucg1, on 11/29/2007, -0/+6I don't think its about piracy, its about saving money by reducing their bandwidth bills.
- Enderz, on 11/29/2007, -1/+6I love how people just pull numbers out of their ass and make it sound official.
- objectcode, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4a programmer has a job to do, and he does the job and gets a pay check. traffic shaping programs also have good uses in businesses where the admins try to control bandwidth for better use.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4People use cars to steal *****... should we start pulling everyone over and not allowing cars through that have the capacity to pack stolen goods? This logic makes no sense.
- Genma, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4these systems have legitimate uses, they're just abusing it to make money.
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4So now EFF should test cogeco for me! Im getting 11 kb/s uploads when Im paying for 70 kb/s. My downstreams are not affected and I spent 2 hours on the phone telling the tech support guy it doesn't make sense how my uploads are so slow only on torrent and p2p protocol..I suggested them using packet shaping through hardware and he suggested cogeco doesn't do that. Also I told him how I used a VPN and got better upload rates. He then suggested checking my ROUTER.....I had already told him I'm not plugged into one and that cogeco hasn't changed my IP Address in 8 months.
I tested my Internet with theyre speedtester and its showing 6mbps down and 612kbps up....Clearly somethings not right.
If someone could test Cogeco that would mean so much...such a little person asking for such a big request sounds ridiculous though. - flahavin, on 11/29/2007, -1/+5And you'll get a coupon to get $15 off one month's service with guaranteed TCP RESETS.
- sliksta, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4Absolutely. I can't really afford to donate even though I love using things like free software. But I made a point of finding the money to donate to the EFF. They are fighting for us and they need our support.
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4You can begin by calling them "Comcrap" or, alternatively, "Crapcast." (See comment #1).
- RedHerringHack, on 11/29/2007, -1/+4Multi subject troll effort. He just forgot to mention neo-cons. indeed, fail.
- flahavin, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Install Wireshark and capture your traffic. Look for those Reset Packets. Then after that, find an wide open wireless access point in a public place and capture that. Packet Capturing is fun!!!
- bbqsalad, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Or cancel your service with them. Get DSL or go back to dial-up.... Or build a powerful wifi antenna and use a neighbors.
- yodaj007, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3The FCC is in the pocket of the telecom companies. They won't do anything, or, if they do, it will only benefit Mr. Telecom.
- Identity4, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3By the way, magic shows are fake, and now im going to throw your icecream on the floor and pop your balloon....
- ucg1, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3People just don't give a *****. The world wouldn't be the way it was if that weren't true.
- AlanJV, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3So when the hell is the FCC going to do something? Oh that's right, it's the FCC, they'll just sit around and twiddle their fingers.
- digitalarcanum, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2I've got a shipment of fail and AIDS with the name.. BobbyVan on it. That you?
- serpentor, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3All those years of pirating Comcast analog cable with a blackbox suddenly doesn't seem so bad. :)
(ok it never seemed bad, now or then, but I'm extra happy about it now) - yodaj007, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2First off, 95% of all your statistics are made up out of your ass.
Second, yes, we can blame them. This is not about preventing piracy. It never was. This is about saving bandwidth so they don't need to upgrade their infrastructure. Alright, lets humor you and say this is about piracy. It is not their place to enforce the will of the RIAA and MPAA. They are not part of the government. Understand?
Third, no, they do not have the right to filter it anyway they want. I can't use Vonage anymore. The bandwidth it gets is *****. And it has been that way ever since Comcast started offering their own digital phone service. Are you kidding me when you say they have the right to use their monopoly and kill other businesses like that? What will be next? Severely reduce YouTube traffic after they start their own video site? Hey, let's start traffic shaping all traffic to certain senators websites. Let's reduce traffic to other news sources after we offer our own. When does it end? You have to draw the line.
Fourth, your comment about kicking p2p users off their networks is *****. Comcast is the only provider in my area. This is the power of local monopoly. In most urban areas you only have two options or less. You're damn lucky to have a third.
Fifth, if the network is nearing capacity they should upgrade the existing infrastructure. Traffic shaping of any traffic wrong, and the piracy argument is not only *****, it's also irrelevant. See my third point again.
Sixth, no, we can't see it from their perspective. But we can damn sure see it from ours. This is the power of local monopoly at work. Fifteen years ago we had Intermedia cable at 1/4 of the price. They were bought out by a larger company and the price went up. Those people were bought out by Comcast, and the price shot up. Back when Intermedia was here we had a choice between cable providers. Now, if I want to watch TV I have only one choice. And because I have only one choice, they can charge whatever the hell they want. Before you even remotely begin to argue we should see things from their perspective, why don't you look at it from ours? Break up their damn monopolies and all our problems would be solved. This also addresses your last comment. We can't do ***** about it.
Don't you understand that monopolies are bad, bad news? Get off your soapbox and go back to school. - hellotyler, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2this doesn't work anymore
- p0ltergeist, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3And 68% of all statistics are made up.
- yodaj007, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2So I don't have a right to free unlicensed content? www.animesuki.com
None of the torrents there are copyrighted in the United States, and Japanese copyright laws do not extend to the US.
Also, we do have a right to free content. Don't confuse that with not having the right to declare content owned by other people to be free. There's a difference. - monkey1016, on 11/29/2007, -0/+260% of the time.... it works everytime!
- yodaj007, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Um, yes. All of my bittorrent traffic is legal. Neither Comcast nor any other ISP out there has any right to shape my traffic. What's next? They start limiting speeds to YouTube after they start offering their own video service? My local Comcast branch is already severely limiting the speed for Vonage and offering their own digital voice phone service. How is that even remotely moral?
- drsaxman, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I've been trying to digg this article, but Comcast keeps blocking my request!!
- Hermmunster, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Enabling encryption on mine doesn't make one iota of difference. I have absolutely 0 throughput on all torrents. So, they are not just managing their network bandwidth they are effectively banning all torrent activity.
- Hermmunster, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1They are interfering with more than bittorrent. My gaming throughput is also suffering. Soon, comcast will simply expect that their cable will run only their content. Of course, by them we'll all be moving on to other providers. I'm looking now for another suitable provider in my area. The problem is that the only two providers in the area have decided to conspire to divide the area up so that we don't have a choice--if you are on the south side of town you must use comcast. On the north side you must use the competitor. This is very inappropriate and possibly illegal.
It has become evident that they have been changing things and the gaming experience I once had that allowed me to play games and have fun and not worry about lag I now have lag which happens in bursts. So, I'll be playing and have a really good throughput for some time but at regular, almost prediictable intervals I will get tremendous lag.
Someone needs to get on comcast fast before they begin to set a precedent that will end in dividing up the internet and making comcast the defacto way of doing it. The internet should be totally open without companies putting in speed bumps or roadblocks. If there are issues with cable they were there 15 years ago when cable internet was released. They should have been planning for that instead of interfering with my legitimate use of the internet. - Jowsley, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1EFF is in the business of defending rights, no making up excuses to shaft people. If you're so confident in the numbers you make up, why don't you conduct a study?
- technoredneck, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Ditto. I decided to part ways with my tax refund this year. Wasn't much--around $300 or so, poor college student FTW--but I figured the EFF, FSF, and Wikimedia could spend it better than I could.
- Jowsley, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Are you on Comcast? The link works fine for me.
Anyways, google cache is your friend
http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:OvSe33MeJw4J: ... - digitalarcanum, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I just did a research paper on this *****. P2P traffic is anywhere from 50-90% of all internet traffic according to Ipoque (google it.) and out of that, bittorrent accounts for about 50-75% of all P2P traffic. Comcast is effectively telling half the internet to ***** off. Not very wise.
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Could you please email me the specifics in how to use wireshark to do this?
email: niko.k.1337@gmail.com - kinghajj, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Thanks but I'll stick with my 8 megabit connection + USENET + AltBinz.
- simongzster, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1You should become a cop and start tazing people
- bbqsalad, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I have Cox for my ISP and am very lucky because everyone just outside my city is stuck with Comcrap. I hope they get sued to hell for this and hopefully put out of business. In my opinion Comcast is one of the worst companys ever to exist. Cox has really great service, there support, speed and everything has been top notch since I started using them in 2002.
- yodaj007, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Agreed. It's far cheaper to do this as opposed to upgrading their existing infrastructure.
