- RedHerringHack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+66All psychics are frauds. Who doesn't yet know this?
- widman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+56The video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9w7jHYriFo
Geller is still doing scams, he was doing parties of rich Londoners last year. Fishing for victims.
Come on. Sue me. - hockey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48Except for the ones that help you find true love.
Also I once heard a guy say "If the psychic friends were really your "friends" wouldn't it be 1-800 instead of 1-900"? - gamebittk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39@ Psychic Uri Geller
Your powers will be mocked in all forms on social websites around the internet. I can see it in your future. - bitt3n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30oh, so yer ken beleef in der powrs of everlotions, but yer canna beleef in pscychics? hold yer tongue afore I burn yer as a witch!
- halik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Even the jamaican lady? Kommon mann, you ken't fehke dat aahcent!
edit: *****! bitt3n beat me to it... - Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Uri is a deluded freak. He deserves nothing. I have no time for parlour tricks and lies.
- icepick314, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20wonder if Uri saw this coming?
i know i did!! - sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"As a result, YouTube not only removed Sapient's video, they also suspended his account and all videos associated with it. Sapient promptly filed a counter-notice to YouTube, but by the time his account came back online, it had been suspended for two weeks."
So as long as a company receives a DMCA notice, they automatically remove the content without first verifying its claims? I understand that this would be impossible and/or unreasonable for the company hosting the content to be forced to verify the ownership, so shouldn't proof of said ownership be required along with the DMCA notice? Wouldn't this solve a lot of problems before they begin? - diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Many so-called "psychics" do real harm.
Like Sylvia Browne, who claimed that a kid who went missing was dead, and it turned out the kid was living with his abductor for years.
Most just take gullible people's money, which in principle I don't have a problem with, but the people (like James Randi) who expose these charlatans are doing a public service by doing so. If people want to continue giving the psychics their cash AFTER they know the truth, then that's up to them. - AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16@FrostieDude (#6603976)
"Psychics are entertainment - like magicians."
Except that quite a few people believe that psychics actually have psychic powers. Sometimes even the psychics themselves. Contrast this to magicians and their audiences, both of whom know that there's not actual magic taking place. - bolerobell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13And to activate the "Safe Harbor" provision of the DMCA, I think they have to take it down for a short amount of time before putting it back up after they receive a counter-notice.
- knyghtryda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11except that many people will see the magician as a performer and the psychic as a guide and thus believe what the psychic has to say. If the psychics actually came out and said "what we do are tricks" then this wouldn't be a problem, but sadly they prey upon the people who believe what they do is real.
- PhantomBantam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10A couple weeks ago, a fourteen year old australian kid gave youtube a takedown notice for chaser's war on everything clips. I watched them, too...
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Nobody's standing up to the profession. This lawsuit is about a false claim of copyright ownership.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9 So very true. Had he really been psychic,he'd have known to keep his mouth shut.
The same goes for Sylvia Brown. Were she REALLY psychic, this never would have happened:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEnQHpWb_ho - kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is one of the myriad reasons I love and support the EFF. They're one of the only things standing between us and draconian copyright.
- drafhk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10This is just so ironic in so many ways. Where do you even start?
- Chickenlip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Is anyone else surprised that YouTube so quickly kowtows to the takedown notices without doing at least a modicum of their own investigation?
- ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@travelsonic (#6604497)
Go go magic brain waves!!! - Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Didn't he see this backfiring on him in some vision before he filed the takedown notice? Only shows how much of a fake psychics are.
- SigmaDraconis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Perhaps Uri should go back to making attempts at suing game developers for using his image on their pocket monsters.
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7EFF did the right thing.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If here were a Psychic he would have seen this coming.
- cryptess, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Travelsonic: Go research the topic of 'cold reading'. It'll pretty much tell you everything you need to know about psychics. They're all frauds. Yes, occasionally someone will pick up the art of cold reading without even realising they're doing it, and genuinely believe they have psychic powers, but an unknowing lie isn't any less a lie. Oh, and should you be in any doubt, all of the big names - Sylvia Browne, John Edwards, etc, are ENTIRELY aware of the lies and fraud they indulge in.
- shaun1018, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7usen mi mynd bendin ur spoonz
- jmnormand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i can see them taking down the video, but the supension and removal of all videos seems a bit counter to google's "goodness".
- lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6>Who doesn't yet know this?
Young people. Older uneducated people. Desperate people.
No shortage of potential clients. - ascolti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's the funniest thing I've read all week.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Funny, you would have thought that he'd have seen this one coming.
- Shadowhawk22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Great video link, thanks for it. I watched this a while ago, and came to the STRONG conclusion that Uri Geller and others like him were very fake.
I just wish these people who do their 'magic' on stage, with everyone knowing it was fake. Then it's fun. Uri Geller is simply a scam artist and a liar. - swordedge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7if Psychics were real, they'd call me and offer advice that I need right now. I figure that if I have to call them, they aren't psychic!
- ChrisGranger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's sad that there are enough gullible fools in this world to make these charlatans rich.
- Tarnum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Psychic? Magician? I think that the proper name is "illusionist", because the the artist creates _illusion_ of magic.
There is nothing wrong to entertain the audience by performing tricks and such, but to claim to have supernatural powers?
But I am open minded, so if Uri produces his Hogwarts diploma, I will believe he is Magician. A Beauxbatons diploma will do as well. Or an Unseen University diploma. - simmersiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5EFF rocks. My heroes...
Somebody needs to finally stand up to this entire profession. It is really the one of the most absurd in our country today.
People paying other people to tell extremely vague lies to them - in an effort to make them feel more secure about their lives. Does anyone know if Psychics are as popular worldwide, or is this just a US phenomenon? - wired4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So the new trend is, if you see something on the internet that you do not agree with you file a DMCA take down notice. I am sure most sites do not care who actually owns the rights to the media, they just fear a law suit and comply with the notice.
- cryptess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love stage magic, and have nothing but respect for the awesome skills of the great entertainers in that field. Any responsible magician will be entirely upfront about saying that nothing he/she does is actually magical or paranormal, just a lot of very clever trickery. Please don't lump those people in with the charlatans and frauds like Edwards, Browne, Gellar, Popoff etc, who make money by shamelessly preying on the vulnerable and gulliable.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All self-proclaimed psychics are either deluding themselves or others.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It is cool to see the Rational Response squad in the news so much, they also recently debated a somewhat famous Christian apologist Ray Comfort on ABC night line. You can find it on abc's website, or the rational response squad's website. I will post the link to the Rational Response Squad's article, because it directly pertains to this article. http://www.rationalresponders.com/
Plus, Kelly (a member) has huge boobs, as seen in the debate...and we all love boobs..especially big ones. - jmnormand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2by that arguement wouldnt they have to put an end to politics as well?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Of course there is, I watched it last night. I love that movie, kinda creepy.
- asmitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I found this one in the related videos, "James Randi exposes James Hydrick". He does this live on a show, hosted by Bob Barker, and the guy just gets destroyed. You can see the WTF on the "psychic's" face when he realizes Randi has screwed him and there's no way for him to do his thing. Just awesome. The most recent comment on the youtube explains how the guy did the trick the first time, and why he can't do it again the second time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlfMsZwr8rc - Suplyndmnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I see DMCA abuse suittsssss....
- graystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How weird is it seeing the hosts light up and smoke a ciggie on air? on the you tube link posted earlier.
- Newlz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2James Randi is Indiana Jones' dad.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1phantombantam, the ABC (the network for Chaser's) actually upload the entire episodes themselves. You can download it directly from their website, already encoded for the video iPod/PSP/PMP (.MP4) or just regular WMV. http://www.abc.net.au/tv/chaser/war/vodcast/
- Kinjiru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2LMAO!! Thats classic... what a f'ing moron!
Maybe he should have consulted with JoJo ahead of time? *LMAO* - missingnoh4x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why hasn't Congress gotten rid of the DMCA yet? It's such a *****-up law.
- Matri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll settle for Michael Crook being in the crosshairs.
- Peacedog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The title should have been "EFF To Charlatan: There Will Be A DMCA Abuse Suit In The Near Future" since there has yet been documented scientific evidence of an actual psychic using controlled conditions.
For all you doubting what scum most of these so-called psychics that charge ridiculous amounts of money to basically cold-read you are, please read this: randi.org/swift/current/psychic.html. It tells the story of an actress pretending to be psychic and how easy it was to do it and how heartbreaking giving false hope and promises can be to someone with a conscious. -
