When it, or anything, hits a certain critical mass Dvorak jumps on board. And just before the general populace, thereby making himself look ahead of the curve.
"Neh, it'll never work."
I like Dvorak, but I have to agree. You will also notice he's very back handed about podcasting. Basically all podcasts suck accept the Twit podcast. On TWIT he is always saying that until professionals get into podcasting it won't go anywhere. I completely disagree. Yes the cream will rise to the top, but I think a lot of us who got into listening to podcasts are sick of radio with all the censorship, and commercials. I can podcast something and say whatever I want. Sure there's a lot of ***** podcasts, but there are good ones also. I don't think Dvorak has actually listened to any podcasts other then TWIT. The two things I believe will kill of podcasting is to much commercialism. Already one of my favorite podcasts SDR has three commercials in the stream, and it's only a 10 minute program. The other thing that will kill podcasting is censorship. I hate when TWIT or any other podcasts censor any curse words. That's why I hate radio now. I'm an adult I don't want to be treated like a child. If you can't watch your own kids then they should be taken away from you.
If you want to check out some early nonsense from Dvorak. Get PC Mag Sept 6, 2005. On the very last page (the section is called Backspace). On the right side there's a little clipping from ten years ago entitled DVORAK...A LITTLE LESS ACCURATE.
" The Looming Cable Modem Fiasco"
"The Noisiest buzz in the industry lately has been over the emerging use of cable TV systems to provide fast network data transmissions using a device called a cable modem. But the likelihood of this technology succeeding is zilch." - notkevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dvorak likes podcasting because he gets to pimp his blog every 5 seconds on twit.
- zoziw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While I don't always agree with John (dvorak.org/blog) he is a great addition to TWiT and his blog at dvorak.org/blog has some pretty weird stories at it.
If you want to learn more you can always check him out at dvorak.org/blog
Or, if you have already checked out dvorak.org/blog you can always read up on him at PC Magazine, but don't forget to check out his blog at dvorak.org/blog.
Sorry, couldn't resist. :) - bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IMHO Dvorak is getting a free ride on Leo's and Kevin's backs.
- Kretek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So let's come up with a new name!
- Nesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed antix. He's the "grumpy old man" of geekdom. "ya damn kids get offa mah yard!!" He does make an excellent point at the end of the article, and I think his prediction will come true, maybe sooner than he predicted.
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even if he's wrong all the time, his presence perfects TWiT. It's like having your grandfather there throwing his two cents in (if you grandpa knew enough about tech to get him in the game). He's the huggable curmudgeon everyone loves to hate. And he gets NO SPAM! If everyone on the show was a happy-go-lucky positive dude it wouldn't be half as fun.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It sure would be nice if people had the abbility to edit their posts, Kevin. Wink wink, hint hint, cough cough-- oh god I'm choking!
- doles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a shame that most the podcasts as of right now are basically the same. Would be nice to see the ex tech-tv crew do something besides the whole "talk to each other about this weeks top tech stories for an hour and plug our selves". Hmm, maybe that "plug our selves" bit didn't quite sound right, but anyhow, you get what I mean.
Although Systm is at least a different format, it's basically a monthly program and currently it's content is not that interesting in my opinion (I am not currently in need of creating lots of high quality RCA cable, so the last episode is worthless and boring to me for example). They might want to take a hint from Bob Villa and be less specific in an episode. For instance, instead of showing how to strip a wire stretched out over a whole episode, cover lots of related topics (the tech equivalent of dry-walling, tiling, laying carpet, etc).
Sorry for the off topic rants. Dvorak is right that it will have a future, but currently the content sucks, people just inherently like listening to other people talk about anything which is why podcasts are going anywhere right now. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It doesn’t matter if it’s just an MP3 "with people talking", it’s quickly taking gaining ground over traditional radio broadcasts.
P.S. Dvorak rules! He gets no spam. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just an mp3? i think not!
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Aww... i Was lloking for a link to Dvorak.org/blog...
- antix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An ass? I think he's great. Net publishing needs a curmudgeon, and he fills the role nicely.
- bwmartens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dvorak is always right. Just ask him. He makes wild predictions about how all technology is flawed and how he would fix it and how he knows best. Yet somehow technology continues to survive his predictions of failure without accepting his ideas to save it. Why do people still listen to him? I stopped reading him a long time ago and was much happier for it. Now he's on TWiT. WHY? Can we vote him off the island please?
- ericpp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dvorak sees the light on something???
Hell must be freezing over - Zerocool82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think he's knows what he's doing. He's been doing this for years so I think if he wasn't good at it. Then we would be talking about him. Oh and I think it's cool that he's a risk taker. Some writer are just trying to make you happy. He tells it straight. Not Gay or Bi. Straight.
- Kretek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0saw this wondering round the net about John "I get no spam" Dvorak...

"Neh, it'll never work." - brianallenus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dvorak had been around a long time, I don't always agree with him. However, he does not take himself to seriously and if your really listen to him has a message when in the message and sadly makes sense even when you don't agree.
- darkfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even though John C. Dvorak isn't my favorite person. I think he adds something to twit. Everyone does. Look how it was when Leo wasn't there, it sucked. The twit isn't twit without everybody including Mr. Dvorak. By the way check out dvorak.org/blog He gets No Spam
That was some shameless promotion of the twit cast in his article he realy wants 1mil people listing. - nomechingues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just hope he is right i just bought 25 podcast domains hehe and i do think he and all the people from twit, make it a great show,
- outerspaceapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I GET NO SPAM"
I envy you Mr. Dvorak
Square Two Podcast - The Next Step - saso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont think he is particularly smart, he has just been around for a long time. His attack on Steve Gibson on Twit for the html email was ridiculous. He is a grumpy old man. Needs to lighten up.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol, the whole TWiT cast is shamelss promotion. One of the reasons I get a kick out of listening to it is hearing all the ways they plug their websites, blogs, work related items.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^Bullseye
- doles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lockeownzj00: if that was directed at me, i might have had it coming.... I was a little harsh and I have to confess, I do listen to twit. But I still think there is a lack of variety in tech podcasting in general (maybe because the podcasting just started to take off).
- infra172, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Nothing personal, bob714 but Dvorak is an ass. Who the hell cares what he thinks?
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dvorak just tells you what he thinks - whether something is CRAP or fantastic - and he won't play both sides of the fence. I don't get the people that hate him, simply because he makes predictions that don't come true a lot of the time. Who cares, at least he is willing to say it, rathe than hemming and hawing and always taking a "we'll see" approach.
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh......read all about it on Dvorak's blog...
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No plug for "www.dvorak.org/blog"? or "I get NO SPAM"...I think he's losing it... +digg
- tannewt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found nothing insightful about the article. Podcasting has someone drastic limitations and quirks that need to be addressed before it becomes mainstream.
Problem one, PODcasting. The name sucks. It implies a reliance on Apple pod* and i* products that aren't necessary. Second, Adam Curry and his gang are trying to find advertisers and $$$ while hours spent creating good technology can make, umm, indicasting (think individual/independent) more widespread. These needed technologies are some sort of distributed bandwidth system, something like bit torrent, and audio file chapters.
A 'normal' indicaster does not have the money to support heavy bandwidth usage, thus that is a limit. Isn't the basic idea of indicasting to be limitless? Where'd that goal go?
Chapters exist in Apples proprietary .aac format but that only works with Apple products. We need them in an open format, such as .ogg, so that anyone can skip to/over a segment of an indicast. - SystemError, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't forget http://www.dvorak.org/blog/
- rryyyaannn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The sad thing is soon podcast will no longer be sacred and we will end up paying a monthly subscription or commercials will be played on them thus eliminating the armature caster. Big companies always ruin popular things.
- JeffS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Nothing personal, bob714 but Dvorak is an ass. Who the hell cares what he thinks?"
More people probably care what he thinks than what you think. - Kretek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's what so funny about the song, not only does he not get spam but he spams his site at the same time!
- theusualfate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dvorak is awesome :)
- gorkon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0John Dvorak...HE GETS NO SPAM! While I don't always agree with him, I think Dvorak brings ALOT to the TWIT. I also think he's misunderstood on PC Magazine. He's always come off better to be on video or audio.
- bebopredux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So Dvorak "sees the light" on something most Diggers already have seen and it's news because he thinks so?
I used to like him and yes, he's entitled to his opninion but, he's an hysterical liberal. He touts "tolerance" but, has none for anyone who don't share his views. There's enough hot air already. - reeki8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mr. Dvorak's comments and insights are greatly appreciated. He is very entertaining.....and he gets NO SPAM. Mr. Dvorak..you keep on keepin on. I read your blog http://www.dvorak.org/blog/ yup have it bookmarked! Take care all Jo An Do not forget to help save the animals in the hurricane area. Donate today!
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey...hey....lets not forget about http://www.dvorak.org/blog/
- rushaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now let's hope he sees the light on Creative Commons.
- Scorpius66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To chriskzoo: Why do people hate Dvorak ... lots of good reasons!
1) I started reading PC Magazine back in the early 80's when I was in my early teens. So ... he's been writing about technology for 25+ years ... so you'd think even an absolute moron would get it by now. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and all the others have learned not to prognosticate because they know it will come back to bite them. Sadly ... Dvorak has not.
2) this guy just doesn't make bad predictions ... it's his freakin' attitude when he does it! bwmartens hit the "nail on the head" when he said:
"He makes wild predictions about how all technology is flawed and how he would fix it and how he knows best. "
Dvorak is completely arrogant and unprofessional in his articles.
3) As been said before, he jumps on the bandwagon after it has passed. Like calling the winner of a car race ... hours after the race is over and everyone has gone home. Again ... making it look like he knows best.
4) When he's been doing tech articles for 25 years, people unfortunately, will take his bad advice.
5) The only to keep him on TWIT is so that the other hosts can laugh at the ignorant bastard.
Oh, and I am sure there are more reasons to HATE Dvorak. I don't want Dvorak to go away mad ... just go away. No more writing tech articles, no more TWIT ... he should just retire and go away ... far away! - chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmph, I thouhght this had to do with the keyboard layout :P
- outz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dvorak sees the light on putting an mp3 online for download.
- ShadowRider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dvorak is an idiot, he's wrong about everything, predicting that cable modems will never catch on, and recently that ms will lose its spot as the top os within 10 years.
- lastmanstanding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, Scorpius, right on dude. You should be on the podcast and writing columns. You're obviously oh-so superior.
- larsinio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can we stop posting a link everytime this guy opens his trap?
- squirrellmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.wehatetech.com for Dvorak bashing
- thepaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, some might say 'it's about time', but on the other hand, he is getting on the ground floor with this by being a TWIT. Yes he gets no spam, and it's dvorak.org/blog.
- slemmons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm podcasting rss feeds to the blogosphere on the information superhighway!
