- durandal2005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33I don't think that has anything to do with the v3.0 as much as it has to do with the loads of new users. I don't want to hate on any new guys, but as the number of users goes up, so does the number of trolls and idiots. It can't be helped, it's just the way social websites are.
Does anyone else remember back when everyone on Digg was a TWiT listener? :) - boomerxl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25I dunno, ever since 3.0 came online, Digg has definitely lost some of its grey matter.
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14"As kind of a brain-dead Slashdot..."
Wow, I wouldnt go that far. - tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9For digg to remain impartial there cannot be a majority. Digg the stories that move you and bury the ones that annoy you. It all will even out in the end.
- digger_twit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I am suprised no one noticed that this story is a dupe.
http://digg.com/tech_news/John_C_Dvorak_on_the_new_digg - appidydafoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"What would happen to the Digg site if the Bush-supporting minions in the red states, flocked to Digg and actively promoted stories, slammed things they didn't like, and in the process drove away the libertarian users?"
Uh, been there, done that. TheRonald would always spam his goddamn "whatwouldronaldreagando.com" comments into every political conversation. The discourse here is trash, the volume is so large, there is no point for any group to gain or inject leverage. Dvorak is stupid, he should be grateful to Digg... the only time I see his damn name is when he writes another crackpot article that gets posted here. Har-har. - kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10What self respecting IT person reads/listens to Dvorak? I mean really. This lush is just pumping out what he's read on other sites without fully understanding what he's saying/reading. The term "technoweenie" so apptly applies from the great movie "Hackers".
- Ingwenya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dvorak has positioned his journalistic persona as a stirrer. He likes to get people wound up because it drives traffic to him. Has anyone looked at his stupid blog that he plugs relentlessley on TWIT, Cranky Geeks: they suck. He is such a hack. When he has comething relevant to say then maybe someone will listen.
- benhorstmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"it probably does it better than a hired editorial staff of hundreds would"
Bingo - Eldoo77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4*Us Freeloaders*... I hate to break it to you, but YOU ARE REGISTERED!!!
- BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have NEVER posted a "dupe" comment before, but in this case I totally agree. And the -only- reason I agree this time is that the "dupe" story was on the homepage about 12 hours ago! I fully support the concept of "digg users will digg what they find interesting", but I think this is the first time I've seen a "dupe" make it to the homepage so quickly after the original story.
- Wedgieman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Rose and Adelson are geniuses"
Mom!!!! Dvorak got into the crack again!!!! - JDOG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't help but think Dvorak is writing about this just to get more hits on his blog after that whole "I piss off Apple users intentionally" thing a month or so ago...
- jkearney, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8does anyone actually care what dvorak thinks?
- Aero1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6remember when digg was made of people that watched the screen savers? i remember watching the episode when KRose asked the viewers to beta test digg because his "friend" just came up with a great site. i was one of the first testers...the good ol days! that sara is a nice piece of a$$!
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What would happen? I'll tell you what- there would be a massive number of page impressions and Digg would make a lot of money. Next.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4To answer Dvorak's question about Bush supporters flooding Digg, what would happen is all the lefties would get pissed and cry about some kind of attack machine or censorship. But the fact they already do that now will escape them. I get marked down all the time for injecting common sense into the virulent anti-Bush posts...like the fact the foreign fund monitoring program is completely, absolutely, 100% legal under federal law and was approved by both sides of Congress. How dare I! And how dare I point out that there is plenty of scientific dissent about the causes (and existence) of global warming, including the numbers from the official temperature record that show temps haven't risen since '98. These things get marked down.
It's how politics goes, instead of people replying to you to tell you why they disagree with you, they mark your comment down to censor you because they just don't like seeing that viewpoint being given any publicity. It's the same reason lefties hate Fox News and call it "biased" while never, ever giving a single example of any actual bias in Fox News' hard news reporting. Fox News airs conservative viewpoints on the same level as liberal viewpoints, unlike CNN and CBS who air conservative views with derision, and that ticks off people who think ANY airing of conservative viewpoints makes someone biased (instead of balanced). Even a UCLA/Stanford study found Fox News to be the most centrist while CNN leaned left. As usual, none of the liberal media reported that study because it was damning to them. - Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dvorak hits too close to home for some people, despite his ready - fire - aim style. He's been goring sacred cows for a long time. I respect the guy as just another cynical world-weary geek, like me. Youthful idealism eventually wears everybody down Even Kevin Rose will stop taking himself so seriously, eventually.
- hurtle24, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I suppose he has a point, but I can't take this man seriously - he has admitted on camera to deliberately annoying Mac users, to drive traffic to his site. How can anyone take what he says at face value?
He doesn't have any credibility (if he ever had any) - digger_twit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah, I think we kind of agree with each other.
- kevinmtu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I do see Dvorak's point, with expanding the userbase you are opening up a floodgate of potential problems. I turst that the digg crew will help keep everything in line.
- netnerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Because it's a duplicate story.
- benhorstmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this happened on Wikipedia. The senatorial staffers got in wiki-wars. I theory digg could become this too. Dvorak is ruffling feathers... that's what he does best...
- dankoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I disagree. The boat has been rocked, and we've seen an influx of new users. Give things a few days / weeks to stabilize. Passing judgment only 24 hours after the debut is too hasty.
- JeffS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dvorak has a point people. As it stands right now the world news portion of this site is too left wing for my tastes. How hard would it be for someone, lets say Rush, to mention Digg and ask his listeners to come on over and pump up stories that support his views? The RIAA getting its members to push an agenda? The Christian Coalition? etc.
As Digg gets more mainstream the content will change. You may not like what you see. - Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Of course digg will become something of an IRC channel. Certain idiots will spam it out of existence. Wanting to appeal to an even larger audience is a kind of greed. So what? We move on. The world won't end. Like the man says, enjoy it while you can.
- Wedgieman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Because he makes us laugh....
its like watching the old man try to eat spaghetti with a spork... you really dont want to watch, but you cant look away.... - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh, look... Dvorak's found something new to spew his ignorant tripe about. I guess he figured he'd better back off on baiting Mac and Linux users for a while.
-jcr - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Why does Dvorak still have a job? Or is still alive for that matter?
- GhettoCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dvorak is always very pessimistic.
- dankoleary, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Obviously John didn't see the Reno podcast. Holy drunkeness Batman!
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do people really care that much? I mean, republicans have their sites, dems have theirs...apple fans/PC fans...do people really go out en masse and try and conquer the internet?
- uslacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How do you know he plugs his blog on his show - CrankyGeeks. Did we catch you listening??? Look, Dvorak may intentionally stir the pot but it makes me see issues in a different light. I can always choose to disregard him, but I will listen.
- EAMUS1CATULI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"But make no mistake, this is utopianism in every way, and there has never been a utopian mechanism, society, or process that has worked for long before it fails. Digg, because of this history, is bound to suffer the same fate. It will get corrupted, collapse under its own weight, or just stop working. Until then, enjoy it while you can, comrades."
Whats he talking about?! what kind of drug is he on? Utopianism?.....I wouldn't call digg that. I think Digg is great, fantastic, awesome etc etc... but not utopianism. This guy needs to get out more ...***** out of here!! - Wedgieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I havent Actually, that sounds interesting...
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not an elitist, I just really owe alot to the way this site has kept me up to date with the newest information that's important to me everyday as a web developer, and while digg 3.0 has only been out a short time, it has been slowly declining in quality for some time now. I just can't see how this will get better. No reason to get pissed people, I rarely will comment in the future on anything anyways so don't worry.
- sud0n1m, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Dvorak is an idiot. It befuddles me that anyone even listens to him. Dvorak on technology is like Martha Stewart on Nascar - Neither of them know anything about the respective topic.
- MixedSpleens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To be honest useful comments have been few and far between way before yesterday. The stories are fine, and I am sure they will continue to get better as people get the hang of it. Your just finding problems for the sake of finding problems.
- UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1::sigh:: Nostalgia just ain't what it used to be.
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I couldn't agree more, I haven't seen a relevant or useful comment since the new version came out. The stories have gone downhill as well. But this isn't a surprise, I think all the old school diggers saw this coming.
- benhorstmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2probably because enough people reported it...
- ethanUCSB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wikipedia is equally utopian, and that hasn't succumb to the dark forces.
- Singee15, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Why did this story just get buried?
- Woody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think a better title should of been "Dvorak: Understanding Digg and Its LIBERALISM". He thinks democracy is just his own ideology. Democracy IS every body's opinion, even if it is Jerry Falwell and Bush-supporting minions.
- netnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you really need to resort to ad hominem here? It's really not necessary.
Why don't you think up a valid counter-argument to Dvorak's instead of insulting the man? - dako, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, I agree about the dupe, I read this yesterday, not on Slashdot or other site, read it here on Digg. I guess v3 lowered the standards or something, maybe less diggs to get something on the frontpage to counter the amount of new categories/topics.
- real, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3there have been trolls and idiots here for a long time thats nothing new
- rgremill, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Isn't the number of people posting just a fraction of the hundreds of thousands signed up? Us freeloaders are the majority.
- humungusfungus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You don't have to take what he says at face value. He isn't saying the sky is green or the earth is flat.
Smearing him doesn't diminish the validity of his point, even if he's left the fact gathering up to the critical reader. Do some reading on the social science of utopias and you may swing around to believeing there is a remote possibilty that Digg will ultimately fail (sadly).
.....just as this story has been buried. So much for open-mindedness. - chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We ALL read him.

What is Digg?
