- hah456, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29Fixed! Works in IE now.
I forgot to close the tag on the homepage... *oops* - dnthomps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Digg should incorporate this or something like this into every story.. Like the Grease-monkey script that adds Coral, G- Cache, and ... I don't remember right now.
- atariby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17To be fair, digg doesnt provide any real content itself either.
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14COOL! Here's a dotcache mirror of duggmirror.com, that is a mirror of digg.com
http://dotcache.com/http://www.duggmirror.com
... and if those 3 sites go down, you can load up the Coral cache of the dotcache mirror of duggmirror.com, that is a mirror of digg.com, here: http://dotcache.com/http://www.duggmirror.com.nyud.net:8090
Sweet! - Flex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15What happens if duggmirror gets.... dugg? A paradox?
- jshpro2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12He doesn't have to ask anyone, as long as he provides a message with the original URL and states that the page is just a cache (which he did) he is exempt to copyright law as long as he does not modify the content.
This is also why google doesn't have to ask anyone for permission to cache pages, or yahoo or archive.org or any of the other 100's of caching services - jshpro2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The only reason I would click on the mirror would be if the original site was down, if the original link is down the webmaster doesn't get any clicks anyways
- hah456, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14That's addressed at http://duggmirror.com/about.html -
I also feel that it would be dishonest to take revenue away from digg, so the ads on the Duggmirror homepage are Digg's google ads and any clicks will benefit Digg, not DuggMirror. As far as I can tell, this doesn't hurt Digg in any way, and I am not generating revenue from that page. All links go to the normal digg pages.
The ads at the top of mirrored pages benefit DuggMirror because we are providing the mirroring service and bandwidth. Half of the profits (if any, I might be losing money on this site.) will go to charity. - jacobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Only Firefox.. IE=blank page
- mike-t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9http://www.duggmirror.com/links/DuggMirror_--_Another_way_to_see_links_under_/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't see any ads on duggmirror either. lol.
- hah456, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's a site that automatically grabs the content of all pages submitted to digg.
When a site goes down due to the Digg Effect, it will still be available on DuggMirror.com - the DuggMirror homepage is just the Digg homepage with [[Dugg]] links added to the right of each story. These [[Dugg]] links will take you to the mirror of the mirror of the page if the main link fails.
More info at http://duggmirror.com/about.html - p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Interesting development. Dugg.
But I'd like to see some commentary from the Digg Team on this site before I "make it my homepage" or alternative to Digg.
"Make DuggMirror.com a bookmark or your homepage. It's faster to load than digg.com and includes [[Dugg]] links which go to a mirror of the page"
Whois info: http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=duggmirror.com - hankmt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9This is a bit odd. It's definitely a great idea, but I think it's something that should be done by (or incorporated by) Digg. The fact is, this site is almost an exact mirror of Digg, using its system and offering its content. To generate revenue from the page seems dishonest.
That being said, as a webmaster who has lost a site to the Digg effect, I love it. Consider it Dugg. - b0nde, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Finally :) Thanks to the creators.
- MikeWazowski, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11OK, whether this is good or not is up to the individual but to some webmasters this could be disastrous - it takes genuine clicks away from the real content providers. Kevin Rose has already said how Digg will not incorporate this feature due to the fact that webmasters may not want it.
It is an unreliable system, not presenting an exact copy of the dugg story inc. CSS or images etc.
Someone who was dugg to the front page then does not get his/her click thru's to his/her sit, therefore they get less money to provide even more quality articles.
I agree with the earlier comments that it is extremely cheeky to use the entire COOL look of the real Digg.com for such a project. - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Well this is what I think will happen. Digg has over 20 servers I think. Duggmirror will survive a few days and then will become very slow, etc. Think about, it caches every single page that is submitted on digg. I like the idea, but I could use a better execution plan, but I would assume you are on a budget so you are limited to what you can do. I would say the smartest thing and the best for the entire digg community is that when an article is submitted, it is cached on digg.com servers. So when someone diggs a site, they see the cached version, rather then the regular version. On the cached page, they have a link to the original page, comment page, etc. That right there would cut down on the digg effect. That is the smartest thing, but good luck to your site!
- JoeWall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6yeah, i doubt this guy has millions of $ to spend on hosting
- hah456, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6There's a way to add a scriptlet to your links bar that will link to the DuggMirror on any digg comments page. See http://duggmirror.com/about.html for more.
- victorycig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You are correct, sir.
- sert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Seems like nothing but positives for the end users though.
"It is an unreliable system, not presenting an exact copy of the dugg story inc. CSS or images etc."
Much better than no copy at all. - DennisP, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11WTF? Looking at Duggmirror, it seems they slightly modify the cached page to include some information ("This is a cache bla bla bla" like Google does) but ALSO include their own AdSense ad to "help cover hosting/bandwidth charges".
They better not try that with any of my websites, and as soon as I notice any of my pages being cached I will slap them a C&D before you can even say it. They're actually depriving me of traffic, clicks and revenue.
This should DEFINITELY be done differently. Maybe opt-in for webmasters who want it? Or they shouldn't modify the original page at all? (I wouldn't have a problem with it then).
But as it is, I don't think they will survive long before getting hit with C&D requests and possibly even lawsuits. - hah456, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7thanks for all your positive and negative feedback. Responses to a few criticisms:
- DuggMirror wasn't intended to mirror Digg, just the sites that it links to. The only digg page that is copied at all is the homepage, which was an afterthought of a way to make the linking process easier. I am considering replacing it with a new layout rather than using Digg's verbatim, but would like to hear more from the community and digg staff on this. What do you all think the homepage should be, or should there be no homepage at all? Comment here or contact me. contact info here: http://duggmirror.com/about.html
- The concept is based partially on MirrorDot.org, a slashdot mirror site that grabs all the links from slashdot stories and mirrors them. Though apparently not for profit, their pages also have sponsors' links at the top. The ads on duggmirror will first pay for the domain, hosting, etc. After that, 90% of any profits made on DuggMirror will be split between EFF and Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
- It looks to me like my site is handling the frontpage load ok but not perfectly. For me it loads fairly quickly and pings are in the 10-20ms range. This was done on a budget so bandwidth is limited. Performance should be faster when it leaves the digg frontpage. If it continues to lag, I will upgrade the connection.
- I am half-way through implementing robots.txt exclusion for the site. Users who prefer their site not be mirrored will be able to insert a rule in their robots.txt. Information will be posted on the about page shortly. Until then, please contact me via the about page to have your site excluded or removed.
- "not presenting an exact copy of the dugg story inc. CSS or images etc." : It's not perfect at the moment, but I am working on making improvements to the mirroring process to get as much as possible of the site. DuggMirror went from concept to digg frontpage in under 4 days, so given some more time I should be able to perfect the process. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Im not sure what this is exactly. Can somebody elaborate?
- WiBu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wont work for me anymore, looks like the dugg mirror has suffered from the digg effect O_o
- DellMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3there is a lag on the digg counts in duggmirror
- atariby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I hear that, if my page gets "mirrored" then i am losing traffic, and possible revenue. Ask before you copy peoples content.
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Works in Safari, Woot.
- psx00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Dugg mirror was created to make some adsense money *using* the content of others."
Isn't that sort of what digg does right now? Digg doesn't create any of it's own "content", it provides a service to others by linking to other peoples content. What this is doing is the exact same thing: providing a service to others using other peoples content. Nothing is more frustrating than when I can't get to a dugg story and this is something to allow you to still be able to get that content. - scrum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4People have to stop boasting about their Firefox extensions.
- tadorna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Duggmirror might not steal the adclicks from digg, but they are stealing diggs pageviews by copying their content and design. I'am not sure if digg.com will like that ...
- jpatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2guys, guys, freakin' chill out!!! duggmirror does have a way to opt out of this service.
Direct copy from the duggmirror about page:
* I don't want DuggMirror mirroring my site. To block DuggMirror from accessing your domain, create a robots.txt file in the root of the domain and add the two lines below.
User-agent: duggmirror
Disallow: /
By the way, I'm curious. If I print out your webpage, Haplo or DennisP, are you going to sue me for copyright violation? - poordavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3lmao@imtigger2
- Ericular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not my extension, I just use it. I seriously had no idea why there was complaining about the Google ads, since I didn't see them until I unblocked them. For those who were complaining about the ads though, I thought maybe it would help to mention it.
The extension works. I didn't write it. I don't know who did, and I don't care. I don't care if anyone else uses it. I don't feel superior for using it. - caser85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What I think would be cool is to have something on Digg that only brings up a link to an alternate cached version of the site when it is down. This way, webmasters get all the clicks when they can handle it, and their site still gets name recognition and reads while they can't.
- Alcibiades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg people often argue that stopping the free sharing of MP3s in the end hurts the bottom line of record companies. "I never would have bought the Tegan and Sara album had I not downloaded a few of their songs first!". Then they turn around and argue that a site like DuggMirror hurts website owners because it deprives them of traffic. But the same argument applies: "I never would have visited blah-blog if I hadn't read their (chached) article on Dugg," I might say.
So which is it: does sharing of content help or hurt content providers? - Miniman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3MY ping to that server is somewere Near China's population.
- viruz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Voted as spam, every "dugg" article on this site has it's own adsense attached to the top of the page in a very non sexy way.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Dugg mirror was created to make some adsense money *using* the content of others.
"After that, 90% of any profits made on DuggMirror will be split between EFF and Dana Farber Cancer Institute."}
Doesn't make it right. I rather pick my own good causes.
What saddens me more: "I am half-way through implementing robots.txt exclusion". Why not *opt-in*. - crackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Asking for trouble!
- cjurczak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dugg Mirror is loading slower than the links on the digg.com homepage...I guess it sounded like a good idea, but I think the guys at digg have it under control...
- bonedog73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1duggmirror is down...lmao
lame lame lame - Cbeck527, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I agree, that would be bad....
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://dotcache.com/http://www.duggmirror.com/links/DuggMirror_--_Another_way_to_see_links_under_/
- jp12380, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1mirror http://laist.com/2008/05/14/photos_from_fri.php
- DennisP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree with Saltire and Haplo (see comment below). It has to be opt-in, not opt-out. Soon I'll have to add a line in my robots.txt for every cache, mirror, correction, whatever site.
Or you could do what most caches do, and NOT include your own advertising into the cached page. - darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, this is just a really good idea. Although, from a webmasters perspective, it's nice to have your website have the problem of too much traffic every now and then.
- shil01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1duggmirror is NOT taking any revenue from digg. ALL google ads on duggmirrors front page benifit DIGG and are all DIGG google ads, not Duggmirror.
From Duggmirror about page --"The ads on our homepage are the normal Google Ads for Digg so a click on that will benefit Digg, not DuggMirror."
All duggmirror does is place a header with google ads to the page following the news link which is being mirrored. Digg would not make any revenue with the ads on the pages that follow the link. - miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg itself seems to have problems with the digg effect. It can take about 5 seconds to load a page here, usually. maybe a server upgrade is in order.
- atstriker2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Sweet, good work hah456!!

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
