- therealfoz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Highly agree with everything said in that article.
Having dual monitors is very useful.
Some great software to work with your dual monitors is UltraMon - http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/
Check it out. - Hexxagonal, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19time to email your bosses =D
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9When I got my last gig I was asked to simply spec out what I wanted.
"I want a mac"
"no way. We're MS here"
"fine, whatever. As long as it has dual monitors"
"what? you can do that?!"
*sigh* - blockquote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8you mean keira knightley in one monitor and natalie portman in another. oy - throw my productivity out the window.
- Havs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8An excellent Firefox feature: If you have two firefox windows open on different monitors, you can drag tabs to the other session!
- utexaspunk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12In my experience, working with dual screens is only more useful than one large screen because it's difficult to maximize two or three things side-by-side on one screen. Yes, you can tile them in Windows by right-clicking on the taskbar, but it will only do it with ALL the windows (whether they're minimized or not, when I really only want 2 applications side-by-side).
What would be great would be a program where you could set dividing lines on the screen that would define the limits for windows maximized within their area -i.e., I set the line down the middle of my widescreen monitor, and when I maximize something on the left side of that line it takes up the left half of the monitor. - agilos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'll take any excuse to justify two monitors.......
- RetroRufio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I have dual LCD monitors, but I'm afraid that 30% is a stretch. It's probably closer to -20%...
1 monitor for digg, and another monitor for the other stuff that comes up between 9-5.
:-) - madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My boss was nice enough to put 2 LCDs on every developers desk.
The only people that are pissed about that are the ones that had 21" CRTs, because the LCDs are "only" 17", doing 1280x1024. I wonder how screen resolution plays into the equation.... - danlemire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As cool as this is, for me it is actually more useful to have linux and windows machine next to each other, and use Synergy to cross between the systems (i.e. 1 mouse and keyboard). I can even assign a task to one pc and move over to other to do something totally different.
The real question is, if you want to do 4 monitors, do you use dual, dual head cards, or one 4 head card? - MegaMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Two monitors is ESPECIALLY helpful for us web developers. One for code, one for Photoshop... then again maybe I need one more for previewing??? Then again why stop at 3 monitors?
- jaderobbins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3but imagine your productivity increase if you kept your huge CRT and added a little 17 inch lcd? that is what i home. I rotated my 17 inch lcd and have it as a second to my 19inch running 1600x1200. That way i keep browser windows on the LCD (it's nice with the rotation because websites are rareley wider than the LCD but almost always longer than your usual vertical resolution) and keep my code/real work on the larger resolutioned crt. Good system :D
- msmith9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4UltraMon is cool, but I really like MultiMonitor, which has the added benefit of being free. Check it out here:
http://www.mediachance.com/free/multimon.htm - mouthster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's true , going from one to two monitors on my PC did increase my productivity. However, I'm still even more productive on a 15" Powerbook with Expose.
- supersteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dual screen porn rules
- sproutworks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am a programmer/web designer, and I find tremendous value in using 2 monitors. I use them for everything I do, not just programming. My girlfriend uses the computer for basic web activities, and she said that it's hard using just one monitor now. I think just about everyone could benefit from dual displays. Perhaps PC manufacturers should sell systems with 2 monitors, since most video cards can support a second display which most often is never used.
Also, if each display is a different distance from your eyes, they will have to refocus as you change monitors, reducing eyestrain. - scispaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dual 21" LCDs are quite frankly awesome for development and dual 25" LCDs are even nicer. I even know a few uber nerds who have a similar set up in their homes.
- haxr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess that would be true....... if I didn't have IRC, and the rest of my IM windows on my second screen.
- Havs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I bet your head glows when the lights are off from all that radiation bombarding your skull
- LordOfTheSponge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2one mintor for working and the other for surfing the net. lol
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Reduces it by 50% when you use the second monitor exclusively for reading DIGG articles about that very monitor.
- plamoni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The great thing about UltraMon is that it plays so well with Windows. It doesn't try to take over the settings from Windows, but instead enhances them. For instance, one of the most useful things added by UltraMon is the ability to drag a maximized window from one screen to the other. That may sound pretty simple, but you really do notice when that functionality is taken away.
UltraMon also adds some pretty sweet features such as hot-keys to disable the secondary displays or lock the mouse to the primary display (for games) and adds support for different wallpapers on each monitor or wallpapers that span across your monitors.
Overall, I recommend that anyone who wants a dual monitor system invests in a copy of UltraMon. Cause it rocks. - jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anything like this for non-nVidia cards?
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dual monitors per machine.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just two?
Bill Gates uses three moniters. - slickfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was running a 19" LCD with a 17" (15" viewable) as my secondary monitor....yes quite weak but straying away from that once I went to college really killed my productivity, let alone my creativity(that may have been attributed with the drugs and alcohol). I kind of expect things to take less time to complete nowadays. I'm just waiting until I have enough money for a dual 30" cinema display setup.
drizzle - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It may just be me, but this article seems to be touting more the productivity gained from having more screen space than the actual idea of having two separate monitors to sort things.
I mean, take a look at this little paragraph:
"With a single monitor, I could jump between applications with a mouse click or a keyboard command (Alt-Tab, in Windows), but not nearly as fast — and small delays add up when you repeat them dozens or even hundreds of times a day. With my dual displays, I simply sweep my mouse from one screen to the other."
A few mouse clicks or one bigass sweep from the mouse. If there are multiple windows open on either screen, that seems like a null point there.
Personally, I'm fine with a single monitor (I use an iBook as my primary computer, more of a comfort thing than anything else, but the portability issue comes up too), and I use Expose to keep track of everything, much in the same manner (although slightly less efficient) than someone using multiple screens with their windows spread across there. The only real difference is that I hit F9 to view all my windows and they just look at both their screens.
Don't get me wrong, I think dual monitors are great, my next desktop will be using them, but I honestly think the jump in efficiency caused by the dual screens is actually based on the idea of simply having more screen space, and thus being able to have everything spread out there for your needs.
Works for some people, others like to have things neatly sorted and focus on only one thing at a time. - briangig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I only have a 17" at home..and it gets tight. right now I have a ton of windows open, TV, browsers, email, etc. The single really sucks when watching stocks, trying to find that one windows with the data you need buried somewhere...Really need to pick a new 19" WS LCD...
- justicets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got 2 monitors for 2 PC's how does that in increase Productivity?
- Hexxagonal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1crazy it didn't show any dupes when i searched or submitted
also doesn't help to find things when you put them in the wront category this is obviously tech not links - jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like double clicking the title bar, dragging to the other monitor, and double clicking the title bar.
- TheTitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dual is the standard at my work place, i love it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another dup to the front page.
http://www.digg.com/search?search=virtues+screen&submit=Search&area=all&type=both&age=60&search-buried=on - losvedir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol, amazing...
- carlosglz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So does this mean I won't have to feel guilty for reading digg three hours everyday? I can make up for it by getting another monitor? Yay!
- jagnum1fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've used it. It works fine. It' kinda a resource hog sometimes, though.
- acceptab1euname, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love my dual-monitor setup (2x19" @ 1280x1024 @ 85hz). I can work on a paper with MS Word on one monitor, while looking at notes on the other monitor...it's great!
hahahah yeah right, it just means I can slack twice as much in the same space of time! - Havs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My 3 monitor setup is as follows:
Left monitor for TV (via Beyond TV Link) or downloaded videos
Right monitor for web browsing or reference materials
Center monitor for my primary task
Overall productivity increase: -300%... damn TV is distracting!
In all seriousness, I don't think the third monitor adds all that much more productivity; although it really did help while doing my taxes. I was able to have my w2 on one monitor, 1040 on my primary, and the instructions on the third. Having a second monitor for reference materials is an immense help though, I'd definitely recommend it. - MasterSharma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no wonder bill gates gets so much work done with his 3 screens.
- briguyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I had dual monitors for a while, then took it off for some reason. I added the second back a few days ago. The left monitor is a 17" LCD and the center one is a 15" CRT. It looks ugly and the left one is a much better monitor, buit it has such a slow refresh rate that I can't stand playing games on it, so the CRT is my primary in the center and the LCD is cocked off at an angle on the left, which is where I can currently typing this. I have OpenOffice.org Writer over on the center, typing a paper, and using FireFox on the left for Digg/research. Dual monitors is amazing. Now if some games would support it, that would be sweet as balls.
- blackb0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or do it much easier using vnc, with x2vnc http://fredrik.hubbe.net/x2vnc.html
there's a windows version, win2vnc, but i'm not going to bother searching for it. - Pizon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just replaced an aging 19" CRT with a pair of 17" LCDs and I have noticed a significant increase in my productivity. With gimp I can throw the dialogs on the left display and keep the image I'm manipulating on the right or have documentation open on one display and my terminal on the other. The other benefits are greater real estate on my desk and my electric bill has decreased slightly because I'm not using a power hungry CRT.
- amish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can tile 2 windows side by side in windows even though u have serveral open windows by selecting a window pressing the control key and selecting the other window on the taskbar. Just right click and select which view you want. I find this very productive on my widescreen laptop. Hope this helps.
- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So I wonder what a 4 monitor wide screen would do to your productivity.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/laptops-pcs/theres-a-reason-why-they-call-it-the-grand-canyon-007329.php - gullevek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ucg1, I had to go down from dual 1600x1280 on 21inch CRTs to 1024x768 on a 15inch TFT because my boss in my new company was such an idiot. He didn't believe, that programmers needed a big display. I took me three years (inbetween I could litereally "steal" a 17" inch TFT) to upgrade to dual 1280x1024. It is okay, but I still miss the screen estatet. Especially to have two terminals parallel. Code & Database. But dual haead is so much better to work with. Every developer now wants it ...
- malliemcg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I started work at my new job I was amased to find two big 1600x1200 IBM Thinkvision monitors on my desk. What I was surprised about however was that my productivity did increase, and I am finding when at home only having one monitor (17" 1280x1024) is limiting. What is frustrating at work however is the quality of analouge output from the PC. I have one DVI and one Analouge output and regardless of which monitor is connected to the analouge output or didgial output, the DVI screen always seems that little bit sharper. (Usually only noticable when moving a window with text from one window to the other, when you get a clarity boost or drop depending on which way you moved it.)
Multi monitors rock! Now I just have to justfiy a couple of 24" Dell monitors for ~ 1000AUD ea via bulkbuyer.com.au - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, it helps a great deal if you're working on electronics among other things... One monitor for PCB and another for schematics. Sure cuts down on the number of printouts that would have to be used otherwise.
- Stockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll second that - allthough I now use 3 monitors at the office (hate when I'm travelling though...grmbl)
It increases our productivity as we spend a lot of time developping LED-wall displays for events, and sometimes 1 screen does not get the message across (although if we pump it through our digitizer onto a 24x24 tiles LED-wall......hmmm)
No seriously, dual monitors do increase your productivity... - JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the 24" widescreen is amazing, but 2x17-19"" have more pixels and cost about half as much.
I'm using a 17" iMac Core Duo with a 2cd 17" and it's great! Plus it's cheaper than the 20" iMac. - rvalles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm with two monitors (from three different computers - yeah, two computers share my big TFT screen) and I use synergy for sharing keyboard/mouse between them. Since all computers run X servers, it does to a certain extend feel like a one-computer lots-of-screens setup.
