- raeldc, on 12/21/2007, -1/+9Guys, you don't need to bring up Drupal vs Joomla or Drupal vs Other CMS every time a Drupal or Joomla story is submitted. One is not better than the other, I think it's just a matter of preference, and also ignorance. I for one don't like Drupal since I still can't understand it. Joomla's approach makes more sense to me. But since a lot of supposedly genius geeks in Digg likes it, I think I'll just blame my ignorance and my limited capability for preferring Joomla.
However until now, my CS professor who loves Drupal can't answer my questions as to why Drupal is better than Joomla. In a Web Development seminar, my professor talked about Drupal, and I talked about Joomla. After the seminar, it seemed that the audience have become more interested in Joomla than in Drupal. - robertDouglass, on 12/21/2007, -1/+8Drupal 6 = extremely cool tool for developers.
- cnldelta, on 12/21/2007, -1/+8Its gonna be July by the time Drupal 6 has all the essential modules made 6.x compatible for a half decent site.
- HalfGiraffe, on 12/21/2007, -1/+5Although I'm tempted to digg you down, there's a bit of truth in what you say. If you want to get a quick and dirty site up and you don't care much about getting specific functionality done properly and you're not too technically inclined, there might be better options like Joomla. I started my current project using Joomla 1.5 (mgmt wanted it) and it was "easier" in the beginning. The more I tried to get things done right the more it was obvious that we needed Drupal. (Plone has some advantages if you need their highly object-oriented approach but if you have problems learning Drupal you won't like Plone)
- spacmn, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4What Joomla Defines as a 'release candidate' is not much different from a beta release.
(See Article) http://www.joomla.org/component/option,com_jd-wp/I ...
And it seems like they tend to release a new RC every month or two, whereas the drupal code cycle seems much quicker (once a week or so). Drupal will have released 2 big versions (5 and 6) in the time that joomla has moved from 1.0 to 1.5. So I think it will be a tough race. Even though Joomla seems to say they are close to being stable. - Foutrelis, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3"you can only provide better "aliases" for your page. /foo/bar is still accessible at /node/21 no matter how much you hate it."
Install http://drupal.org/project/globalredirect - It's exactly what you want. Of course, it's good for SEO too, as search engines will probably give you a penalty for having the same content under two urls. - Ghoul, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Regarding node/x URLs:
Why does this even matter? Like you said, you can alias the URLs so that the public never sees the word "node" anywhere on the site, in URLs, etc. Only those with content editing ability will see node/x, and again, why does it matter?
Second, in Drupal 6 there are two functions which can rewrite any and all URLs:
http://api.drupal.org/api/function/custom_url_rewr ...
http://api.drupal.org/api/function/custom_url_rewr ...
Their example shows how to change node/x to article/x. - eean, on 12/21/2007, -1/+4I caught joomla last week, it was pretty bad. Luckily the swelling is mostly gone now.
- twojciac, on 12/21/2007, -1/+4Dru Paul 2008! Bring back the Constitution! :p
- chubbymidget, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3I'm new to Drupal. I like it but it is different.
I often look at stories like this to get other people's ideas and impressions on things I'm interested in.
Why Digg Dual down? He made a statement and backed it up with examples. I can understand if he just said "Drupal sucks" but just because you may love Drupal you have to admit it's not perfect. And can't try to hide any comments that point out valid inperfections. - billydisaster, on 12/21/2007, -2/+4Well I'm glad I switched to Drupal. I was wavering between waiting for Joomla 1.5 or waiting for Drupal 5. This was just over a year ago.
- eean, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Didn't 4.x versions break compatibility with each other? So its somewhat misleading to note that it went longer... scripting libraries don't have ABI concerns to keep them honest.
And I agree, I was just getting used to Drupal 5. I hope they had some real big issue that forced them to break all the current modules and Drupal 7 won't be here for a while. - winnch, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3Love it. I've made a business around Drupal. Fantastic platform.
- bertboerland, on 12/21/2007, -2/+4joomla is not in the same league as drupal. hooray for both!
- TritonX, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2It's called progress, some features can't be implemented without breaking previous versions, which still have their usage. So it's normal that the core development team is one step ahead of module developers. I much prefer frequent newer version which bring new core functionalities than a CMS that will try to please everyone so they won't implement the best technology they can.
- baomo, on 12/21/2007, -2/+4'My guess is this becomes a race, who will come out with their CMS first? Joomla 1.5 stable, or Drupal 6, so far time wise i bet Joomla, but feature wise and usability, I'm guessing Drupal 6.'
last year it was a race between Drupal 5 and Joomla 1.5. guess who won. - sgluskin, on 12/21/2007, -2/+4Great news,... now the module developers will really make quick work of their upgrades. Congratulations and thanks to all the hard work that went into it.
- jacquesm, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2it's funny how you don't want this to be a joomla vs drupal discussion but then you do just that. Follow your own advice please :)
- connieLingus, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2not at these prices...
- ucg1, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2I haven't had any problems yet with Drupal, and I'm not a "PHP expert" by any means (a software developer with very little experience with PHP). I can get it to do everything I want (occasionally make modifications to core modules for that, though). I wasn't too crazy about the Admin section in previous versions, but I really like the one in 5.x.
I haven't used any other CMS as extensively as I've used Drupal, though, so I don't really know how well it compares. So which ones do you find better than Drupal and why? - armor, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2ew.. joomla is worse
- cosmicdreams, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3Drupal Developers often say that one of the advantages of Drupal is that a lot of attention has been given to creating a set of APIs for other developers. Some even say this is Drupal's primary focus. It has also often been said that this has not been (until 1.5) a primary focus of Joomla. IMO that this key programmatical difference between the two.
Also a subject of programmatical importance: Developers are keen to get Drupal 6 out the door so they can start the dramatic changes they are planning for Drupal 7. In 7, they are planning on dropping support for PHP4, so that the core of the site can use PHP5's Object Oriented methods. - baomo, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3i found drupal easier to get in to than any other cms i tried. i like the admin better than joomla.
i don't know what you use but if your looking for easy you probably should go with wp. - Arancaytar, on 02/13/2008, -0/+14 - now we know.
- bwynants, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1lovin it! it works great.
- Arancaytar, on 02/13/2008, -0/+1Try "Not too basic and not too clever", if by "clever" you mean the learning curve.
- dual, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2See, that's not even the case. I am technically inclined. Very much technically inclined, and a PHP expert.
As you mention, though, I did have a lot of problems learning Drupal -- not setting it up initially, but attempting to make significant changes was hard (as well as my "node" issues and other philosophical differences). - smoothdzion, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1I'm way down here in the comments and rather than talks a CMS down I thought I'd actually talk about the release. It seems like they have added some great stuff that it should have done before like trying to set up friendly url's from the get go. I like how they've organized the menus now, how they actually labelled taxonomy now, the ajax organization, and all that stuff. I use to be a huge Joomla fan. I liked it a lot but like a lot of people mentioned, if you go above beyond the simple site Drupal has by far done more than I could ever imagine a open source cms can do.
I know it's all about getting all the lingo down and understanding all the tools. There's good in all CMS's and I even use to use WordPress for a lot of things I did. Drupal from my experience once you get a handle on it is much easier to make a complex site using taxonomy, cck, views, and contemplate. I can make a news site pretty quick with all those above mentioned modules.
Give Drupal a try. Don't give up because you aren't "familiar" with it. Because once you do become familiar with it, you will be blown away with what you can do. - crisifix, on 12/21/2007, -2/+3I absolutely love Drupal, and what it has done for me. Thank you devs!
- NikLP, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1If Drupal users of the calibre of IBM, NASA, Yahoo!, Amnesty, Greenpeace, Warner Bros, Led Zep etc are not adequate to convince people that Drupal is a cleverly thought out, intricate system, then I fail to see why people bother trying.
To be perfectly frank I'm quite happy to see 99% of the development community using something else, as it means Drupal forums and IRC channels aren't completely full of dribbling idiots.
Drupal 6 appears to be a vast improvement over Drupal 5 in terms of usability and breadth of potential projects. Issues that have long bugged users and developers about Drupal are being ironed out in due course. Things take time. - bertboerland, on 12/21/2007, -2/+3dukenukem should not have won the wired vapourware award :-)
- ucg1, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1That seems to be the problem with anything that requires the use of 3rd party modules. I'm still using 4.x on one of my sites and am just now considering the upgrade to 5.x. I've been using 5.x on another site and really like it. Seems kinda quick to be already releasing a 6.x version. The life of the 4.x version was much longer than this IIRC.
- spacmn, on 12/21/2007, -4/+5My guess is this becomes a race, who will come out with their CMS first? Joomla 1.5 stable, or Drupal 6, so far time wise i bet Joomla, but feature wise and usability, I'm guessing Drupal 6.
- etx313, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2Let me know when they release usable documentation. The thing is practically unusable unless you have weeks and weeks to reverse engineer it.
- eaton, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Well, we're also trying to get D6 out the door so that the ecosystem of important modules built on top of core can be upgraded to take advantage of the new capabilities...
- keathmilligan, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1There's quite a lot to know about Drupal that you obviously didn't bother to learn because it was 'too hard' for you. Getting a basic blog or news-site up and running with Drupal is actually very easy. By the way, you CAN disable clean URLs, although for the life of me I don't know why you would want to.
- Charlotte_Web, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1All of the links on the EJW website are generating errors.
- ucg1, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1True about the 4.x versions. I guess they have just adopted a different version numbering scheme now, so that they only increment the major version number for breaks in compatibility?
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Your "heared" stiked fear into the hearts of non-believers.
- Arancaytar, on 02/13/2008, -0/+14.x seemed to live longer because instead of the version numbering. 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7 all broke compatibility, so they are as distant as 5.x and 6.x.
- Atomic1fire, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1they had to use ethanol....
- Vyoma, on 12/21/2007, -2/+3Ha! Yup - it is kind of a race. But as they say, "It will be release, when it is ready".
- zorti, on 06/02/2008, -0/+0thank you so much. this is most interedting
