- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Rank isn't all it's cracked up to be in some ways. Not only does the FP algo seem to handicap the top users (100+ diggs is really ridiculous to get to the FP)....but those guys also seem to have to always put up with the "gaming digg" comments. I've noticed MrBabyman is starting to unfairly get bashed here and there since he hit the top ten. It must be some lame tradition to attack the top users...no matter how much good solid material they submit :(
- jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5this story currently has 112 diggs:
http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Are_Google_and_Digg_democracies
and this story currently has 100 diggs:
http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/93_year_old_blogger_It_Bothers_Me_That_I_Have_To_Go
both have still not been promoted. It is interesting that both of those stories where submitted by MrBabyMan. He ranked #8 on digg so I would think that those stories would have been promoted by now. - jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3looks like the google and digg democracies post finally did make the FP
- jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3now that people already have friends, if digg removed the friends feature people would just end up just subscribing to their former friend's rss feeds...and if digg removed the friends feature AND user rss feeds digg would probably lose a crap load of users.
- MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's the final tale of the tape, before the Digg algo (removing the post from the Upcoming Stories queue after 24 hours) caused these posts to expire.

Thankfully, the post on the 93-year old blogger's lament hit the homepage. - MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ryland2
This seems to be happening to me for about a week now. I sent Digg admins a polite email last night, and have yet to hear back from them. Milocat's comment below (before it spiraled into a flame) would seem to be a likely explanation as to why Digg's algorithm is 'handicapping' me (and apparently only me), however, keep in mind, I have never asked anyone to digg my submissions, and I have no direct influence on what those who have chosen to befriend me Digg. If a lack of diversity in those digging my stories is the case, what really can be done about it? (And why should I be penalized for it?) - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Your confusion arises from the fact that you assume that any story that gets 100 diggs should be frontpaged.
The folks who run digg seem to think differently. Hence the concept of "digg diversity". Now, if every story submitted by a digger is dugg by the *same* 100 people every time, those stories won't be front paged until a few people *other* than the 'usual suspects' add their diggs. - ryland2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, but befriending only allows more people to see your story, the vast majority doesn't auto-digg. As some one in the Top 100 I will tell you that about 3-10 friends digg each of my stories, and its not the same people, just the ones who saw it and thought it was cool.
- jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sorry for the 'where' typo
- jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm with ryland. Usually only 3-10 of my friends digg my stories (out of about 102 users that have befriended me), and I certainly don't digg stories just because it was submitted by my friends.
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Problem solved to the extreme: They should do away with be-friending other diggers. That way it's more difficult for the cultish mob diggers to find the stories they blindly promote based on who submitted it.
BUTT OH NOES THAT'S NOT WEB 2.0!!!11!!11!!one - ryland2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sad that they have not gotten back to you, I for one can vouch for your submissions as quality stories and can see no reason as to why this is happening. As you may recall this something of this nature has happened before (stories requiring 100+ diggs to front page) but the issue was quickly resolved and it was not only happening to one user. Best of luck in resolving the issue :)

Contact digg and ask for an explanation, that is just ridiculous. - milocat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2here's the problem...
the digg community will complain to hell and high water that sites like thinkprogress, lewrockwell, etc. have an army of users who ALWAYS digg those stories and get it to the homepage.
but guess what, the same thing is happening to mrbabyman and whomever else. the SAME sets of users are digging his stories. i remember a blog post a while ago that digg looks for diversity in digging for their algorithm. so from my perspective, the top submitters aren't being penalized directly b/c it's the diggers, who are independent of the submitter, that are causing the stories to not get promoted as fast. and sure, indirectly, that affects the submitter. but that's an unfortunate consequence of users with "mob mentality" and just digg anything. i SERIOUSLY doubt that a user who diggs 90% of a users submissions is really making a quality judgement on whether they should digg, report, or do nothing. it's a blind digg and that's what this algorithm is at least trying to sort out. this is a social website with unique problems and issues...don't like it, go away. NOTHING is perfect, stop bitching, and if you're angry, walk away for 10 minutes. digg is a FREE website, they're not taking anything away from you. you are not entitled to anything and you should not expect it either.
