- SemiSarcastic, on 07/11/2009, -3/+57As long as human beings control a system it's prone to corruption.

- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -7/+17Wow, I've never seen an article give this broad an overview of Google's practices. I'm not the paranoid type, and I have no pretenses that there's such thing as absolute privacy on the internet; there's only degrees of privacy. That said, it's pretty staggering just how much info collect from us.
They provide good services, sure, but the more I read about their data-mining habits, the more I think it's bad idea to do all your one stop shopping with them, just as a matter of principle.
And it doesn't exactly give the best signal to elected officials, either, especially in this day an age of civil liberties violations, wiretapping warrantless searches etc. What does it say about us when we voluntarily turn over so much info to one corporation? What must your average politician think of an citizenry that does that?
Myself, I won't use Chrome, use Google search less and less, and am considering abandoning my gmail account. I got along fine without Google before it came along, and I could get by just fine without it now. - NiftyG, on 07/11/2009, -2/+11Some people post their entire lives on Facebook.
- collution, on 07/11/2009, -0/+8Welcome to Digg; for beginners, stop spamming. Also, everybody can see your picture, grandpa; "lulz."
- jpl7986, on 07/11/2009, -2/+10Here's Google about a decade from now...
http://i36.tinypic.com/205b8uw.jpg - EddiePotato, on 07/11/2009, -1/+9Your subversive speculation has been duly filed.
Anyhow, the US government has already long abandoned any pretense of not spying on its citizens. - N01SE, on 07/11/2009, -1/+7The first you agree to have google automatically update and install, yeah because by default it's set to auto-update and you must agree to have it installed.
the second's language was not very clear so they remedied that:
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/update-to-g ...
and the third, well just because a legal contract doesn't rule something out doesn't imply it's going to happen, most contracts are as general as possible to provide a maximum breadth of protection, that's pretty common practice for any legal document.
Looks pretty standard. - insanebrain, on 07/11/2009, -1/+7We all know what you did last summer...
- lolmax, on 07/12/2009, -1/+7Oh no, we dont want anyone to know that Becky ended her relationship with John, and that Jennifer uploaded new pics and just got back from vacation, they might sell the data to the Russians!
- swimtwobirds, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5mmm. there's nothing like an old, bald, bearded spammer.
- Bazillions, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5He may be talking about "Better Privacy"

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en ... - usdave, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6I agree with the concern that this article brings up regarding so much data of your life in Google, but doesn't everyone realize that before google, alot of people used Hotmail, the MSN browser, Internet Explorer, MSN messenger, and Microsoft Windows....or yahoo.com, yahoo mail, yahoo search, yahoo messenger, etc.
The main thing to realize is to be careful with anything you do on the internet. Don't simply give out information whenever some site asks, and don't store anything on your accounts online that isnt worth losing to someone else or given to the government. - Virgule, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6Knowing about me is knowing too much about me.
ZING! - EddiePotato, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6Most any organized system is prone to corruption, human-controlled or not. Biology is inherently subject to feast/famine cycles and disease. Ecology is subject to natural cataclysms. Stars explode on their own. No need to dis on our species - we didn't start the fire, no we didn't light it, but we're trying to fight it!
- ZenMojo, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6Necessary evil to generate ad revenue.
- StonerThomas, on 07/11/2009, -3/+8You don't have a choice. Analytics, adsense, admanager, embedded google maps, youtube (and many more) ALL send back data. And it's all embedded in sites not owned by Google.
- EddiePotato, on 07/11/2009, -2/+7Ah, the money making business. I've heard of this.
- Rogem002, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5It's called "A good spam prevention system".
- martage, on 07/11/2009, -2/+7Google probably just knows about my hardcore porn addiction.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4Oh.
- jpallan, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4Google knows more about me than my therapists, parents, children, spouses, and the IRS, but it probably knows about the same amount about me as do MasterCard and American Express.
I already have been caught out for saying Bad Mean Things on the Internet in real life. Still don't care. - N01SE, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4What would happen? People would stop using it.
- funkywood, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4How about replacing Googlw with Microsoft? Why is it ok when Google does it but not Microsoft?
They are both corporations competing to make money but one gets attacked relentlessly while the other has fanboys putting out platitudes like "no ones forcing you", brainwashed by a simple phrase like "do no evil" into thinking they are nothing to worry about, no matter that they know eveything about you.
Just because Google's business model is free to the end user they think it really cares about them? Grow up and recognise when you've been branded. - GrammerPants, on 07/11/2009, -7/+11Sounds like Google is a company that is in the business to make money.
- supersayanyoda, on 07/11/2009, -3/+7Its not like they're the only company that has your information.
- phogasmic, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4blah, blah, blah. If you are so paranoid then don't use Google. Go to the Library, Buy a Phonebook, Pick up a Map at the convenience store, mail a letter, call 1-800-Movies.
- eckofire, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4this add-on is called............?
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4As I already said, it's matter of degree, show me where fb collects as much personal data on me as Google does, and maybe 'll consider it.
FTR I don't use Twitter, and don't use my real name, date of birth, age or have my phone # listed on my fb account, so how's about you take your accusations of hypocrisy, sprinkle them over a large bowl of my fluffy, brown stools, grab a spoon and dig in? - Me1000, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4Aren't there like 100 articles written every month about this? I think we all know by now that google has a lot of information about us...
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4And what kind of impression do we give our government if we're willing to entrust one corporation with that much personal information?
- Joest23, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4Being critical is a good thing. Personally, I'd rather the press /not/ suck Google's balls all of the time. As much as I love Google, they're not perfect.
- rubenz, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Are you suggesting that Google become self-aware?
- darkened, on 07/11/2009, -2/+5AdBlock Plus and block all of Google's services and nothing can track you from them, ever.
Privacy is an important aspect to me, however it's also a balancing act of what I get in exchange for using Google services. Of course the only service I use regularly is Google Search and Google Groups. - MAGZine, on 07/11/2009, -3/+6Digg me down for this. I don't care.
I don't see the issue here, really. Oh no? They're going to see I searched for 'Grandma's cookies recipe?'. They're going to scan my email for keywords, index them, and then use it to show advertisements? They might do the same for my Google Documents?
Guess what: use a separate account if you don't want it tied to your primary. How do you think the entire Google suite is free? From advertisements. If it wasn't free, people would be busy trying to pirate all of Googles stuff. Everyone wants something for nothing, and when they GET something for nothing, they see there is an issue - in this case the issue is privacy. Why does everyone have this self-importance that EVERYTHING THEY DO needs to be quiet and private? I can see your SIN, credit card numbers, maybe some email should be kept private, but it is secure for the most part. Obsessed about your security? Good, go pay for a VPN, and setup your own email servers. Unless if you're a tech and know how to properly configure servers, I bet your data is safer from hackers if it were with gMail. Does everything think that Google is going to look at them and see where they are/what they're doing? Does everyone think the Government is going to get themselves access to this to further control their citizens? Yes? Good - that's a Government problem, not a Google problem.
"Google's servers unencrypted, raising the risk of data loss, theft, or unauthorized access."
How does data loss get prevented with encrypting? Even if it's encrypted, it can still be stolen and decrypted with brute-force methods, if the person really wants to know about you. Oh no, Google knows your location? So does everyone else. Reverse IP - it'll tell you a general location. No, it won't be exact, but if you're entering your exact address, that's your own privacy issue -- NOT Googles.
Do people think that Google's program is sending all of their images and texts back to Google for indexing? NO. Quit being outragous. Maybe phone info so if the application crashes, it can send a report to Google... MAYBE. Quit fearmongering about unknown details. On Chrome: The only reason it was 'tracking your keystrokes' was because you were pinging Google to do a search and return relevent querries. Seriously? Turn it off or use Microsoft, if you trust them more. Why shouldn't it be opt-in? Are you really worried about Google tracking your searches? It's all about advertisement and delivering you the best product possible.
If you don't like how Google operates, then leave them be. Don't write articles from a biased point of view that only makes it look like Google is going to march into your house/eat your food/sit on your couch/rape you children. - breadfred, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3I must get a girlfriend named 'Comments'
- sh1tman, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3You're doing it wrong.
- pin0chet, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4you can easily block all that stuff with noscript, a which incidentally is among the most popular Firefox add-ons
- breadfred, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4For ***** sake. You are too tight to spend 15 cents? For a service that gives you a mailbox and God-only-knows what other kind of benefits? And, for you getting one without paying, they Google might have different sign-up strategies for different locations.
Also, why do you sign up for it if it is not stopping spam? - thathappycat, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3If you're that worried about privacy, don't use online services. Regardless of who you use, Google is the most secure. Let's not forget that they've now touched briefly on profiles of human beings.
- Joest23, on 07/11/2009, -2/+4A lot of the concern is probably caused with the terms-of-service that Chrome had at it's launch.
