- niczar, on 07/04/2008, -15/+908Step 1. Launch Tool > Dom Inspector
Step 2. Click on top-left icon button in Dom Inspector
Step 3. Click on strange black dot in gmail window
Result: Dom Inspector highlights an IFRAME element
Conclusion: for some reason, gmail decided to use an IFRAME for some Ajax-ish purpose instead of XmlHttpRequest.
Woopdeedoo. Stop the presses! Not. - fuckingusername, on 07/05/2008, -38/+832OMG black dot

- Branchex, on 07/05/2008, -7/+272It is not a dot, use Firefox 3's zoom feature to see it. Up close picture: http://bp0.blogger.com/_mSfLHLh5OxQ/SG8ArSJ6UnI/AA ...
- Chalks777, on 07/04/2008, -10/+192Coding mishap, most likely. However, the conspiracy theorist in me wants it to be the first step in marketing for an awesome new feature that will make our online life better... and butter my toast.
- TimeIsTissue, on 07/05/2008, -13/+190are you trying to say that google isnt perfect?
- chaoswings, on 07/05/2008, -6/+159Seriously, all this fuss over a few pixels.
If Google suddenly added a line of text to the page diggers and flickr users would probably pressure the FBI to launch a full scale investigation to determine it's origin. - rnawky, on 07/05/2008, -60/+202Pickup an English book; outside is one word.
- Cerpin_Taxt, on 07/05/2008, -2/+140You win the thread
- SIRBERUS, on 07/05/2008, -0/+100That's what a 1px by 1px iframe looks like with borders.
- chaoswings, on 07/05/2008, -2/+100Viacom: "Damn, he knows...quick change the dot's color that will throw them off!"
- d3bruts1d, on 07/05/2008, -10/+89It looks to me like a folded corner. Who knows what the real, if any, intention is.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -5/+73uh, who cares?
- agsinger, on 07/05/2008, -4/+71front page? really ?

- scallon, on 07/05/2008, -2/+60Damn it, now I can't stop looking at it. I go to check my email but every five seconds I have to glance at it because it just sites in my peripheral vision.
- ejm143, on 07/05/2008, -1/+56people are so curious about google, they note every single dot of google.
- airwalkery2k, on 07/05/2008, -2/+55I haven't noticed it until now. However, I see it.
But now it is going to bother me too. Thanks a lot, Digg. - SIRBERUS, on 07/05/2008, -7/+59That really made me feel bad. =(
- RaDeus, on 07/05/2008, -2/+54if that was real google would win the internet........
- Stormwern, on 07/05/2008, -0/+52It's a tiny spy camera, they're watching us...
- x0rcist, on 07/05/2008, -3/+54The box scrolls down with you!
- jspegele, on 07/06/2008, -2/+52Holy *****, you see it on all 3? Dude, shut down immediately and don't turn your computer on for at least 7 days. This is a truly critical situation.

- crossmr, on 07/06/2008, -0/+45Read the linked google thread

it? "
Very suspicious?
Jesus christ. These people are paranoid beyond belief. - jmreid, on 07/05/2008, -1/+44No longer will I have to butter my own toast! Thanks Google!
- moresheth, on 07/05/2008, -4/+46Most likely they're just trying to make things more secure, like Subspace does:
http://www2007.org/program/paper.php?id=801
I'm not sure why they allowed it to be visible, though. - Canadian0207, on 07/05/2008, -2/+44is this the garbage that makes front page these days?
- biznatch11, on 07/05/2008, -3/+45Gmail is aware of this "dot" and they're going to fix it.
http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Help-Logging- ... - dragonlink2, on 07/05/2008, -0/+41the real question here is why your inbox has over 300 emails.
- xinxu36, on 07/05/2008, -19/+58I'm wondering how anybody notices it. If nobody pointed it to me I would have never noticed. How do you notice something like that?
- Sonof8Bits, on 07/05/2008, -27/+65First comment on Flickr: "You know. It could just be an update to the design to make it look like a folded sheet...just saying. "
I think so too. - PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/05/2008, -4/+33Confirmed on Mars.
- renegadeafk, on 07/06/2008, -2/+29NAGGERS
- laelfrog, on 07/06/2008, -0/+25It is actually 3 iframes 'js_frame', 'hist_frame' and 'sound_frame'.
document.getElementById('js_frame').style.display = "none"
document.getElementById('hist_frame').style.display = "none"
document.getElementById('sound_frame').style.display = "none"
will do the trick :-) (vash469 was correct.) - Lutremi, on 07/05/2008, -2/+27Never gonna give uuiU up
- Lith25, on 07/05/2008, -3/+28Netscape what?
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+26Ctrl + to zoom in

- dafragsta, on 07/05/2008, -0/+23Google employees get free buttered toast. You still have to butter it yourself.
- mrdab, on 07/06/2008, -1/+23If you click it and peel it back it reveals Google's hidden blueprints to take over the world.
- nericus, on 07/05/2008, -1/+23It's not a moon, either.
- stygiansonic, on 07/05/2008, -0/+22They are likely using an iframe to allow for cross-browser compatibility in maintaining a proper browser history, i.e., use of back/forward buttons.
http://www.subbu.org/weblogs/main/2006/06/ajax_and ...
Using a hidden iframe is a workaround to 'trick' some browsers into maintaining a history other than using the URL hash/fragment (part after the '#' symbol) and polling to check for changes in this value. (IE6 needs the hidden iframe, I believe) - tibe, on 07/05/2008, -2/+24I don't know what it is either but I noticed it about a week ago. Around the same time I noticed the back button worked for logical things that didn't use to work. Like searching, clicking a message and then pressing back takes you back to the search results instead of the inbox.
- fanaticwon, on 07/05/2008, -2/+24 /awaiting reference to the movie "The Net" with the hottie Sandra Bullock, maybe if you hold Ctrl + Alt and left click some secret government admin site will pop up. Like the whole Mozart thing in the movie.
- ScottoGato, on 07/06/2008, -3/+23Never going to give you up.
