- stik, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29One Computer in 1998.... $1,000
One dialup connection in 1998..... $50/mo
Google still in beta stage... Priceless
And for everything else there's Mastercard. - thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I think we should replace Beta with Google.
Firefox 1.5 Google1 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Interesting MSN of 1996 has one banner ad, MSN of today had about 20-30 ads. The ads have increased, but their site remains useless.
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That logo is burned into the brains of millions. You can't just ask them to change it.
- LtJimDangle2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Okay, so this is a link to a blog, which links to the "way back machine"? And people are digging it? Seriously?
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yay, a free pen
- rrbaker, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Wow. Beta before beta was an industry standard. Pioneers!
- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://web.archive.org/web/20000511223352/www.google.com/adv/intro.html
and so it began... - _skin_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Looks fine to me... Not crowded like every other search on the net!
- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If he found the link on that page credit should be given to that page. It also has links to Yahoo, MSN, and Excite as someone else pointed out.
- yoshu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the searchbar still connects to google - funny.
- cadavreexquis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's good to see that after all these years, the Google logo still holds true to its 3 pillars of logo aesthetics: bevel, emboss and drop shadow.
- CamZak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8$50 a month for dialup? You got jacked.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember Altavista, that's the search of choice in 1998
- echo1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh man check out the msn site, and their "internet tutorial" for those "new to the internet"
those were the days - deadlift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty cool:
http://web.archive.org/web/19991009030623/www.egroups.com/group/google-friends/
Larry Page and Sergey Brin posted up their own bulletin postings themselves :) - version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fun to look back. This "Add a URL to Google" link still functions... I wonder if it actually still works on the backend in some way shape or form.
http://web.archive.org/web/19990423175332/www.google.com/addurl - thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yahoo always looked like spyware to me. Riddled with crap.
- obscurelyfamous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They were developers behind a tech, not just the founders of a name.
Of course they'd work on their own project. - brian_hundt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If Google updated "their current 8-bit lookin' logo", would the search results improve? I find it a bit difficult to second guess Larry Page and Sergey Brin after what they've accomplished in only eight years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I do remember all but the MSN one.
remembering Google with a "beta" under it... classic. I feel elite. I remember seeing a bbs post about how good it was supposed to be. - bonoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my new homepage!
- Shucker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay... seriously? Mastercard "parodies" have to stop. You can add them to your 1998 list. GOSH!
- sfields, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually the barebones look of Google is part of its appeal. I mean, why wait for tons of stuff to load (adverts, etc) when all you need/are looking for is the search field?
I remember this as being the appeal of Google for me back in the days of dial-up (when things took forever to load). And I still like it now. :-) - hipnado, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3THIS made it to the front page? Why?
- BxBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2now they get someone else to do it for them! :)
- sfields, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Absolutely classic.
- Larke2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just wish it was less dithered. they can keep the font and colors. just improve the quality.
and yes. better logo = better results. just like red makes cars go faster than other colors. :p - ptcfast2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, it is better than ALPHA being put on everything. I mean, c'mon, who want's ALPHA stuff from Google. =P
- Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nah the best pic was of the desk that had the computers on it that ran google in 1999
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1msn.com...made fresh daily
- manatee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Not front page worthy...reported as lame...old for that matter. :) Just because it says google doesn't mean it is front page worthy. Move along now, sausages.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2uhm, ya i remember google back then. but i used my own interface from my homepage and got custom results back (lame colors, custom background, etc) - hey it was kinda cool back then, at least I thought it was! ;P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excite (Oct 12, 1999): http://web.archive.org/web/19991012204921/www.excite.com/
Exite (Mar 20, 2006): http://www.excite.com/
Wow, not much has changed in 7 years. - KAMI_no_kodomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also als me that question.
Specially since it was already some day on Digg. Even the the realy first site was one day on dig: Before they even had the name google and before they even had there own domain. It was back*somting*.standford(or so).edu(or so) - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2A "browser" is a software tool that you use to look at web pages. You are using a browser right now to look at this page.
OMG HOW DID THEY KNOW!!! they must have hacked into my system!!!!1211 - deadlift, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@ltjimdangle12
maybe it is being dugg because digg cannot have more than 1 url placed in at once? the post also links to yahoo, msn, and excite, while if this directly linked to the google page, users would not have direct access to the msn, yahoo, excite pages
just a thought - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1NO. the only time i begin questioning digg is when i see the dozens of archive.org submissions getting sent to the front page. Archive.org is a free resource! all you need to do is type a url in and you'll find older versions of that page, we've established this many, many times. PLEASE stop submitting web archive links to digg!
this is almost as bad as the constant submissions of the old archive versions of digg. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3hey for more ubiquitus advertising campaign info check out tubgirl.com -- dork.
- rboyce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google used to be called BackRub
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1hey morons who posted above me and said google is still beta: google is not beta. gmail is beta. other google services are beta, and yes, google overuses beta, but Google is most definitely NOT BETA.
- wadelindsey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3One Computer in 2006.... $1,000
One Broadband connection in 2006..... $50/mo
Google *STILL* in beta stage... Cult Classic
And for everything else there's *STILL* Mastercard...
The more things change, the more they stay the same! - Oatmeal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow, Google looks almost as horrendous then as it does now
- matt0baba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1lol i actually like their old logo better.... not jking ... its a bit more flashy but its clean , i like it //
- superstewy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2and the sad thing is, the Google logo and web site 8 years later looks no better.
- 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8why does this ***** keep going to the front page? YOU GUYS ARE MORONS
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Google means instant digg!
- digitul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0im dying to read that msn internet tutorial
- NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9Is it just me, or did someone say that LAST TIME THIS WAS ON THE FRONT PAGE???
[/postal rant]
[/sarcasm] - deadlift, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Google love to slap on BETA in anything! :) Been doing it for, what, 8 years now?
