- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Doesn't matter one bit. That is simplistic thikning. "Hey...the porn industry was a big deciding factor with VHS and Betamax, so it must be one here too." Nope. Becuase the difference between home video tapes and the alternative at the time (going to an adult theater) is about a gazillion times greater than the difference between high capactiy DVDs and the current alternative of regualr DVDs. The demand in the porn industry is simply not nearly as great as it was 25 years ago with VHS/Betamax. Especially since pron generally doesn't shoot in high definition anyway.
- dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Sorry, I duped:

One side note: pressing the "Digg It" link in the site made everything ridiculously easy... the title, description, and even the topic was already filled in. Somebody really wants the traffic generated from Digg. - sirber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8H264 should be chosen. By far the best codec out there.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hopefully Disney chooses not to use mpeg2 compression with their blu-ray transfers as Sony did with initial titles. it was shown that VC-1 compression is superior in image quality.

Steve Jobs doesn't run everything over there at Disney. He even said that with Pixar being bought out by Disney gives him more time to focus on Apple, but yes he does have quite a bit of control over Disney with the amount of shares that he has.
As for the Blu-Ray, Apple does support the Blu-Ray format and has for awhile now. - DaveMode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For the record, Steve Job's control over Disney is pretty small. He does sit on the board of directors, but it's common for big companies to have CEO's and execs of other companies sit on your board. The Disney board also consists of the CEO of Sears, the CEO of Starbucks, and even a professor of theology.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7might be a hit in japan....
- arkan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why this is a surprise to anyone I'll never understand. You can easily predict which studios are going to support which format merely by looking at buisiness relationships. In this case, Sony and Disney have a huge relationship (not the least of which is Disney-MGM Studios) and it so it was pretty much already predetermined.
Ultimately, I really think its going to come down to what people can get their hands on... Even though Blu-Ray will initallly cost 3 to 4 times more then an HD-DVD set many of the box stores, most notably Best Buy, have already announced that they will sell Blu-Ray exclusively... Not because its a better product, not because that's what their customers want, but simply because Blu-Ray devices have a higher sales margin for retailers. - danjal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5now if only they could make some good movies worth buying...
- JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Every story I come across that has Blu-Ray on the title has to mention old formats. Betamax, UMD and so on. Why not put that to rest. I know, we all know. I'm not a Sony fanboy but that crap gets annoying after hearing it over and over.
- obijohn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And in related news, George Lucas has jumped on the Blu-Ray bandwagon, saying Howard The Duck will be released this Christams on Blu-Ray.
Honestly, this has about as much weight as a paper clip. - da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6sorry to steal the top of the page but I have a question nobody seems to be asking:
Does this mean Steve jobs who is a important member of disney(doesn't he run it all now? or at least own it?) supports blueray? thus does this mean apple will support blue ray? it must doesn't it? - afx1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a good thing for those of us who want the technically superior format to win.
- sheared, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Disney also chose the (old) Divx format when the Divx-DVD wars were raging. I suspect the customer will be the final arbiter of which format "wins."
- bluemech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why do you need that much space on a disc that'll rot eventually anyway?
- JoeyNine, on 10/12/2007, -14/+15Dinosaur and Eight Below? Might as well release a video of someone taking a dump on Blu-Ray.
- FlorentG, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12We still have to wait what the porn industry will choose...
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5They chose Blu Ray...
I think...:P - heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just remember, Disney supported Divx (the failed DVD rental service).
- bluemech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah thoise are some pretty bad titles. If Disney backed Sony 100% I can see that beign a big push for Sony, but 8 crappy titles no one would really want to see in HD anyway? No thanks. Dinosaur is the only one remotely worth seeing in that format. I stil lthin kthis "war" is a little early in the making, H isn't as widespread as people liek to think.
- Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Disney will want the most heavily protected system they can get, of course it was going to be Blu-Ray. Considering the quality of the vast range of their titles, they should concentrate on making good content instead of focusing on protecting the bad.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you fail at life my friend.
- ronaldhennessy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Sorry, "Eight Below" and "Dinosaur" is not going to get me to buy a Blu-Ray player.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I really dont care since my TV doesnt have HDCP...
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2well, most of the people who takes this as a surprise obviously has never heard or even thought of the positive relationship between Disney and Sony:D
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I have extra time in my hands, what can I say?
- danjal, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3lets face it.. when has disney made a good film, besides pixard who really needs another way to be told how to love one another...
- XTheEliminator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I wouldn't even take a copy of Dinosaur or Eight Below if they paid me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8just an informative comment.
I feel sorry for you that that is the best you can come up with, and that you were probably quite pleased with yourself after you submitted that comment. - gothsquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2That's not necessarily true. Beta max had better quality and features but died because of the proprietary format and the fact it was more expensive to produce. Also from Sony , the umd, minidisks, MicroMV, Super Audio CD, HiFD the list goes on. Sony has a long history of making great tech but trying to pump it for more than it is worth.
- sethworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0HD-DVD will win in the long run. DVD and HD-DVD can be written on the same disc. This will be a huge selling point.
- thepeggasus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0How right you are! They are the king of anit-fair use! One of my daughters who speaks Slovak brought a Disney tape here with her (Toy Story). I sent the video (which is in PAL format so it does not play on our tape player) to a company that will convert your PAL tape to NTSC. When they saw that it was a Disney video they would not convert it and sent it back with a note that any other company's tape would have been OK, but that Disney wouldn't allow conversion. So, here I am with a video in Slovak that my daughter caonnot watch even though by fair use laws we should have been able to make a watchable copy. I was angry enough about it and there are enough other films out there that I haven't bought a Disney video tape since.
- haackers, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7Blue-Ray will win. Only need one reason, and that is more storage space than HD!!!
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1That's kinda gay...
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3HD pr0n is awesome! its out there and will be huge in 1 year...
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2you care enough to make a comment in a article that you "dont care" about.
- getrealnow, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2@FlorentG
yes that is the decieding factor!! - getrealnow, on 10/12/2007, -22/+8Die Sony
