I dont know about you all, but i miss the early days.... back when you could find a really cool or unique story and submit it as a way to share with other people...
now a days the only thing you can front page is a dupe, or something you can see at google news, cnn.com gizmoto, or anyhting AP. Oh, and a youtube video posted in the news section. (also any funny picture from 2000-2005).
Now whenever I see unique cool content, i look and see my username isnt MrBabyMan, so I dont even bother to submit it.
Remember when you used to see things marked as "inaccurate"?
Now you can see a flashy title with an inaccurate story linking to a blog... and all the comments rave about how false it is... and it will get 2,000 diggs.
No im not bitching b/c I dont frontpage... I'm bitching because soon digg is being over run... I want my old digg back. - 10goto10, on 10/11/2007, -7/+148People have been using "the" way before Kevin Rose was born, dude.
- sicapitan, on 10/11/2007, -10/+85BREAKING: KEVIN ROSE TALKS ABOUT DIGG
- CourtesyFlush, on 10/11/2007, -2/+71The inaccurate tag was gutted due to the incessant whining from the cubicle monkey action committee.
Now any POS article with more than a hundred diggs can't be touched by those who demand accuracy and integrity in an article.
Basically, Kevin threw Digg to the dogs in exchange for traffic from the fringe propaganda mills. Those people involuntarily digg anything with the proper buzz words in the headline. Thus, the dupes, the false, and the dim. - cambrown99, on 10/11/2007, -9/+65"Out of control" is causing me to use it less and less. Last week I dropped it as my homepage. Now I only use it for spam links to sell Colbert for president T-shirts.
http://www.cafepress.com/colbert08hq - tiburon33, on 10/11/2007, -6/+50Well at least we know what he thinks of DIGG
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -1/+41in monopoly money
- hockey, on 10/11/2007, -4/+43I think that is digg's biggest problem at the moment. The sheer amount of articles and content that gets submitted to this site that is either false or unconfirmed rumor is staggering. What's even more disappointing is the fact that these articles will get literally hundreds and sometimes thousands of diggs. Think about that. Thousands of diggs on a piece of content that is false and most times blatantly false! Furthermore a quick scan of the comments proves that the majority of people posting comments haven't even bothered to read the story they are commenting on.
Don't even get me started on the fanboy affirming hourly iPhone/Wii updates either. . .
Digg will ultimately never go anywhere as long as this keeps up. It can be hyped and spun in mainstream media till the cows come home but the proof is in the pudding and there is far too much of what ThinkBox described going on for this site to be truly taken seriously. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+40All this whining, and yet you guys are still here.
- BZKyle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36TITLE SAYS IT ALL!!!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30You made me digg up spam. Damn you sir, damn you.
- opticsnake, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30Had to look at the description to see what the hell you were talking about. Dugg for subtle humor.
- TheFederalist, on 10/11/2007, -25/+53"Politics is one of our most popular sections and will soon overtake technology."
Sadly, Digg users know little about politics. They develop their political opinions based on a series of YouTube videos and ThinkProgress articles. Their ignorance is illustrated by the fact that the two people they support for president (Paul, Gravel) are among the lowest ranking candidates in the race. There's a good reason these guys aren't taken seriously by the rest of the real world.
I love intelligent discourse, but the crap some of you guys regurgitate is simply disturbing. - scabbers, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27It's not out of control... it's fully in the control of the ron paul mafia, the apple mafia, and the remainder by the mouth-breathing newbie kids who think photoshops are AMAZING and "hacking" an ATM is "sticking it to the man" .
- junaru, on 10/11/2007, -7/+28"We started off with that large tech base; we were 100 percent technology for, like, the first year. So that was kind of our roots."
Go back to them - cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21You hit
enter - madmac66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20The trouble with Digg is not Digg, the platform or Kevin Rose. Its the opinionated wankers with a superiority complex and nothing to say other than trash other posters comments/opinions. The comments used to be relevant and interesting, now its just a slanging match. I find I'm using it less and less.
- HUKI365, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I've only seen two inaccurate tags in my time. Mainly because, A. I came after the rush, B. I dig stories early.
But quite obviously the algorithm needs adjusting because how the hell did that iPod "Confirmed" story not get burried as inaccurate? - slipgrid, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21Perhaps you are wrong. I'd imagine that digg users are much more informed than your average Barackbots. Digg users read, which is a big start. Sites like digg have a way of uncovering group thought, and the group doesn't seem to support you Federalist, officially stamped, Rudy campaign.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16If you have to try to make a meme work--it won't.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18Given the manifest asshattery of the two major parties I'm not so sure that JUST the fact that Paul and Gravel don't poll well says much. Actually it may say that most of America is a lot dumber than digg users. After all, Americans want the war to end yet they are not supporting a truly "end the war now" candidate. That's stupid.
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16The biggest problem on digg and many other similar sites is the emphasis on ratings for comments. This makes most commentors popularity whores instead of actually writing something relevant.
- wiremonkeymommy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14FTA: Q-"...but I wonder if at any point you've opened up Digg and felt embarrassed, either by the top stories or the comments about the stories."
Uhhh.... that's how Digg "works", if you don't like the stories, exercise your vote to bury, if you don't like the comment, digg it down... duh! - slipgrid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Nice, and now that I have the backing of Kevin, back to digging only Ron Paul and 9/11 Truth stories.
- drakethegreat, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16We should have a good old fashion Exodus to Slashdot. After all many of us would be returning to the site where we started. I for one am sick of the same boring stupid uninteresting filth that seems to filter through digg now. No need to go into specifics because ThinkBox covered most but with all the people who submit with hidden agendas its no wonder why so much is crap. Even if there isn't the conspiracies by Ron Paulers or iPhone fanboys, there is still enough junk being submitted so that it hits the frontpage. Said to see such a great thing get killed because unfortunately this world is full of mindless sheep, even on a site such as digg it seems impossible to hide from them.
- KidVicious, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Perhaps the reason they aren't taken seriously is because the presidential race is really a "who's got the most money" contest. I may not know politics, but I know which ideas I agree with, and the fact that most retarded Americans are going to vote for the richest moron isn't going to stop me from voting my conscience.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I'm just tired of the POLITCAL nature that has swapped Digg, that I just click on the technology (what little there is) and don't bother
99% of the time with the rest, unless I'm really really bored. - greatkingrat85, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10"...soon the system will start recommending stories that you might have missed or that you might find interesting, based on what you've dug in the past."
Sounds like a great idea, Kevin, looking forward to seeing it in action. - rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10then what are you doin here.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12If digg were doing its job properly then there would be no possible way for such a small group of users to account for such a large number of the frontpage articles.
- jessicass, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9How many times are you going to say that before you actually.. ya know.. leave?
- musicbear, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I like that Digg is run by the users, but behind the scenes, they aren't helpless when it comes to directing / managing the site. Hands off is good for the typical stream of digg posts, but to make it a really usable news tool / community center, they may need to get their hands back on the controls. Specifically they DO need to scrape the top news sites and force those "top stories of the day" onto the front page or into another tab / feed / sidebar so that you could actually use digg as a scraper for top actual news stories. Hopefully some of those stories will be dugg and commented upon and they would then show up in the other digg tabs / feeds.
They also need much better filters and controls so the user can set preferences based on each feature of digg. Has this been marked inaccurate 50+ times, then I don't see it. It's been marked as spam 50+ times, thus I don't see it etc... Is the article linked to a known blog site? I don't see it. Has this article been submitted before? I don't see it etc... filter out domains etc... more content filtering... etc...
I also don't want to turn digg in myspace or facebook, but the community aspect sure needs to be buffed up as well with pownce integration. I wouldn't take much advantage of that, but I know some of the more... uh... intense diggers... might have a use for that especially when trying to avoid chronic spammers / jerks or trying to follow favorite submitters.
It's a good tool, but it just needs time to grow in order to develop a few more hands on tools for not just the user but also behind the scenes. The hands off approach might just need to be a little more hands on... - jessicass, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12So just this morning you added the other sites and removed digg.. but here you are now, reading an article on digg and posting a big dramatic goodbye?
Did you forget to watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXUHy8vrVY0 ? You need to up your internet importance to like 5 lj's and/or show some bewbs before anyone will start caring about your departure. - atticus8, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9And further, you have the gall to criticize digg users for making their political opinions based on articles, of any kind? The bar is low here in America, but you still seem to think that average digg users are more ill-informed than the average American (non)voter. Here is the long version of what the average American takes into account when selecting a candidate: "Who would I rather have a beer with?". Here is the short version: "Who loves Jesus more?" I'll take a guy who has read a few articles on ThinkProgress / NRO / [insert here] every time. I'll take a guy who is AT LEAST interested enough in news to be on digg.
It's not a high standard. It's still higher than what's out there. Get off your pedestal. It's hallucinatory. - weaksnyc, on 08/14/2009, -3/+11Off-topic question: Would you (or anyone else) kindly explain how you got line breaks to work???
- OwdenBowden, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9WHAT?
How can you tell what he thinks from that very short piece? - RAiNsTorm, on 10/11/2007, -12/+20Well, he may think that this is good, but just this morning I added Reddit, delicious, boing boing, and newsvine to my Google/ig page and removed Digg. I'm fed up with the groupthink, mob rule, idiotic drivel that this site has become. Here, you want to know what will be on Digg today? Ubuntu, iPhone, Apple, MS Sucks, Best ... Ever!, and BREAKING!!1! (insert some lame ***** here)!
I'm sure I'm not alone, other people seem to echo my feelings, so Kevin can enjoy the shell of what used to be Digg... Because I'm sure as long as he has money in his pocket he could care less, and that is exactly the type of person I don't support. So long and thanks for all the dupes. - atticus8, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9What you say is flatly contradictory. If a number of diggers support the two least known, least popular presidential candidates (and on both sides, I might add), that does not show their ignorance of the political process. It shows their familiarity... at the very least, a greater familiarity with the whole of the race than most of the public. Ignorance != making unpopular choices. It's just a little pathetic you try to make that connection.
- hockey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Blame the commenting system for my mini wall of text. I swear I put in line breaks. . .
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12For ***** and giggles I buried it as inaccurate
- barbobot, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14TheFederalist, your name suits you.
- matt.rubin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+809 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0
oh wait............... - nahsrocketeer75, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12FTA: "We just built the platform. It's really up to the users to determine what they want to see on the front page." And what type of story makes the front page most often? Says here: "Diggers dig nothing more than Digg." http://digg.com/tech_news/Diggers_dig_nothing_as_much_as_Digg
- 0crabby0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6We've nowhere else to go - Now you know our secret shame...
- riah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I digg digging Digg articles about Digg.
- barbobot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Talk about a non-sequitur analogy. Maybe we should get war insurance.
- eggo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You let me know as soon as you find an unbiased media source, chief. I'll admit, digg can act as an echo chamber or sorts, but dismissing the candidates who are popular here because the mainstream media doesn't take them seriously is just closed minded. I'm no Paul fanboy, but the man does have some good things to say.
Digg needs to bring back the "inaccurate" flag, if you ask me. - mesmeriffic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Unfortunately, democracy is only as good as its voters.
- CaptainHarlock, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7"I used to be on TV. Now all I've got is this 'Digg' thing, and I'm not even sure it's mine anymore."
- TheFederalist, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Yes, I can give them that. They are at least paying attention and developing opinions. It just bothers me that those opinions are based on biased media. I'm not saying ALL Diggers, just enough of them to control what reaches the front page.

What is Digg?
