- yalskey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I love DirecTV... nothing but good things to say about it.
Good customer service, and a quality picture.
I have 2 DirecTivo units and a standard unit, and it's only $61 per month!!!
I can record 4 shows at once, and the picture quality is very good... maybe not DVD good, but close.
My honest opinion. - MrSolutions, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17ebonovic - you sound like an employee of DirecTV. - looking at your profile all you have ever done on digg.com was digg a story about the DirecTV HD DVR being released.
HR20 - they have been working on the issues for a long time and still DirecTV users are suffering. Why was a faulty DVR released in the first place?
DTiVos - Surely this is more to do with DirecTV deactivating the features than someting TiVo should be investigating.
HR20 networking - please explain these alternatives....
Engadget Interview - it gives a breif overview of what the DirecTV representative said and then what DirecTV users have said. It links to the interview for more information. No point repeating the whole interview. Very little was said about fixing the issue - it sounded more like DirecTV considered it fixed. - therippa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11So you can only record over-the-air HD channels?
- arktos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7they pay decent. ;)
i work for one of the technical call centers for the Protection Plan. the Directv Tivo's were definately the best dvr's, even though they never got any of the series 2 features.
The R15's and HR20-700 have been a complete nightmare. It is terribly frustrating as a customer service agent to hear all these horror stories of people's dvr's and tell them its just a software bug, and will be resolved with a software update "soon".
And right now we have a problem with the Tivo's not recording any season passes. That is huge. And we don't have anything to tell our customers, we have no idea whats wrong. It is frustrating to be on both sides of the call in these situations. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Go to your Now Playing List and press enter on your remote and make sure Groups is set to on.
- pikespeakhiker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@MrSolutions-
Your characterization of ebonovic is actually not true. Earl is one of the most knowledgeable and respected members of the directivo (and now directv dvr) forums. He does have contacts that afford him previews of new hardware. But he always tells it like it is. He has contributed an immense amount of time, effort and knowledge to the communities mentioned in my second sentence. He also posts in those communities (see tivocommunity.com and dbstalk.com) under the same name, so you can go and judge for yourself.
My (humble) closing suggestion is that you may not want to draw opinions about people solely from their digg profile. - TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@MrSolutions
My HR10-250 DTivo has all the features I need. Granted, yes, they did cripple it by disabling HME, but IMHO that's not a big deal. I can view photos and listen to music on my Xbox360. I rarely have a need to do remote scheduling either. I prefer the HR10-250 with Tivo without those features over the HR20-700.
My understanding is that they disabled HME due to pressure from premium cable companies like HBO. They don't want me to be able to stream HD programming uncompressed in pristine quality from HBOHD to my hard drive where I can then do what I want with it. Is this ridiculous? Yes. Is it DirecTV's fault? If what I've read is correct, no.
By the way, yes, the HR20 is a piece of crap IMHO. Did they ever enable true dual tuner support on the HR20? - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8A post in that thread tells you who he is, apparently an admin at DBSTalk:
"Now Chris (weslause)...
Your comments wouldn't have anything to do with that we have had to ban you over 30+ times from DBSTalk, and most of the major DBS forums have had to do the same.
Again... I am "not" an official beta tester, as DirecTV doesn't have an external beta testing program. " - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4DirecTivo is 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times better then any DVR's out there! I don't even care about other HD DVR. just give me Tivo, you can keep your no name brad Tivo wannabe DVRs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Jiffylush, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8For me the only advantage DirecTV has is the NFL Sunday Ticket. Everything else *for me* is advantage cable co (with my series 3 that is).
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4THE DAY THAT DIRECT-TV TURNS OFF OUR DIRECT TIVO SUPPORT.....is the day that they will loose MANY MANY MANY customers.
I will call 10 MINUTES after it happens and cancel my account. - Mitchl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, I am somewhat happy with my HR20-- but I readily admit that their testing sucked, and I feel like a chump for paying $300 (and working like a dog to find one) for a machine I am LEASING (not owning, I paid $300 just to get to be able to rent the thing).
Throught the 8 or so releases of the firmware, I have had varying levels of success, and a couple of those releases were forced downloads I knew i was getting beta s/w. Since I got the current national about the 15th or so of December, I have had a few straggling issues, but no lost shows. I am pissed that closed captioning works as ***** as it does for HD, and cannot believe that the CC signal was never intended to pass to the TV through HDMI. Why we are going backwards on CC at this point is beyond me. My wife and I frequently want CC on because we have a small child and sometimes we cannot follow the mumbling on shows like Boston Legal and would rather read along.
The instability and non-intuitiveness was disappointing after having DirecTivo (Phillips DSR6000) for more than 4 years. That thing just ran like a champ (still does, but not hooked up to the satellite, I just have about 120 hours of shows I have never gotten around to either recording or watching).
On our other SD TV, we have a DirecTivo2, and it is having some issues on missing shows. I think it is a guide issue.
As far as D* service though, I won't switch. My wife wouldn't let me. After having so many times when cable went dark and having to wait days and work around their schedules, D* is so great- signal is always there, except in storms so bad you should have the TV off and be hiding in a closet anyway. - TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Voom is still alive and kicking. They were purchased and their channels are now available on Dish Network.
- johnnyrocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5DirectTV dropping Tivo was it for me, that's the stupidest move they could have made. Luckily I could switch to Verizon FIOS, and I like it a lot. Not a nice as having that Tivo, but it works fine.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Since they switched from TiVo, it's been all downhill.
Hacked DTiVo with MRV and patched to turn off decryption so you can copy files from it. That's the way to go! - DigitalBrian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I dont have DirectTV but everyone I know have it and I have never heard them complaint, and every time I have been watching at their place it has been phenomenal, if I had to pay for cable myself I would change to DT thats for sure, Cable are way too expensive.
I have one question to all the moaners though, if you are so unhappy with Dtivo then why dont you buy a regular Tivo? it works fine with DT, again I know several people who has regular Tivo with their DT service. - dree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Your Tivo didn't downgrade. You (or a family member,etc..) must have pressed the 2 button on your remote while in your Now Playing List.
Press 2 again and your folders should come back. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Satellite TV in general kind of blows. When I was trying to get service form Dish Network they wanted me to pay $200, per HD DVR. Now this isn't to own the box, it's to lease the box. Yes that's right.. you have to pay $200 more for the privilege of paying them a monthly lease fee for the box. I asked the CSR I was talking to if she could explain it and she called it a "lease upgrade fee" I laughed, told her thanks for her time, and hung up. Of course when I called DirectTV they informed me they didn't even have any HD DVR boxes to offer me but they could put me on a waiting list. So in the end I said screw it. Thank god for torrents/usenet.
- jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have my damn directv hd receiver... buggy as *****. I've already sent one back and the new one I have to reset every damn day to keep recording shows. POS!
- dqderrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, I'd agree with this guy since I also have 2 DirecTivo's. But I'm only running SDTV. I love my DirecTivo service like a religion. Is that wrong?
However, I've heard nothing buy bad news about HD with Directv's DVR/PVR units. To the point where I had my Sony Trinitron TV repaired so I wouldn't have to take the HD plunge without a "real" HD Tivo unit. (You know, one with local HD streamed as well.)
The only thing I don't like about the Directv SD content is the high level of compression. God does water look aweful. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah the HR-20 is a piece of *****.... ive bought a total of 3(three)......... so far and the current one locks up at least once a week, requiring a reboot that takes no less than 10 minutes...and unlike the Tivo the HR-20 ONLY records if your press the record button...
even the tech guy from Directv admitted it is a piece of crap compared to an actual tivo - Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At one point I had voom, directv, and comcast (as well as OTA)
From a HD PQ POV, directv was the worse. Don't get me wrong, it was watchable and if all you've ever seen is directv HD then ignorance is bliss. However, when compared to voom, OTA, and even comcast (cable), the directv HD PQ was much softer and had much more artifacts, especially in fast moving scenes. Voom eventually went away :( and I got rid of directv due to their HD Lite programming. Never had Echostar HD programming so I can't compare them to the others. - totallydismayed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The new PVRs are pieces of crap. Mine has always acted quite buggy. The kicker was the other day it tried to download some new system update and just hung. No matter what I do, reset the thing, unplug the thing for extended periods of time, etc. it can't seem to recover. I think I'm going to have to try reformatting (losing all recorded programming) and if that doesn't work send the stupid thing back.
I also have a TiVo in another room, have had it for like 5 years and think it's great. I wish DirecTV would bring them back. - LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Finally! Recognition for us Crippled DTiVo users! I utterly hate DTV for their choice to abandon TiVo, Inc and leave the DTiVos crippled and start their own crappy DVR.It's about time somebody called DTV out!
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No HD content and compressed video though. The DTivo's recording looks exactly the same as watching it live, unlike the Series 2 (and 1) units.
- Vanadium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was a long time DirecTV subscriber until just a few weeks back. However after 3 missed install appointments for an HR20, and then customer service being belittling and condescending when I called and complained I switched to Comcast. I couldn't be happier now. I had no idea how great the OnDemand service is, and the fact that they have HD programming OnDemand makes it even better.
I am a bit disappointed with the current HD DVR offering from Comcast, but from what I understand they have a true Tivo in the works which will be fantastic. - adam84a, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I could not live without my NFL Sunday Ticket !!! Especially the HD Games
However, if the NFL ever begins to offer the full games over the internet at a reasonable resolution, then I would not need any type of video service, Cable or Sat. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Cable systems also "comb" the bandwidth/detail out of HD channels also. And most don't let you share video content with any PCs, Viiv or no.
HR20 is okay and getting better. I've got an HR10-250 HDTiVo actually (and it's not dropping shows), and I'm considering swapping over to the HR20 just to get to MPEG-4 so I can have HD locals and the 100 HD channels DTV announced by the end of the year (yeah, right, how many times have they said that before!). - nickstl77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because you cant use the TIvo Series3 with sattelite (including DirecTV) anymore. It only supports OTA and Cable.
- rpatel88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can atest to the HR20 being a POS. I had one and using it after using the Tivo seemed like stepping back 15 years - kind of how you would feel if you had to use floppy disks.
- r3drum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2r15 is buggy as hell. I wish I could go back to DirecTivo.
- IamBobX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3At least there Customer Service speaks English. When there is a problem, they will fix it quickly too.
- JorgeGonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4As long as DTV is the exclusive home of NFL Sunday Ticket, I'll be a subscriber.
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You don't need phone line.. I don't have any of mine connected to phone line. I just skip the nag everytime.
- thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty simple process to open up the Direct Tivo (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/) and enable the HMO features, tivoweb server, tivo to pc streaming and the recording archive.
- WileEPeyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was a DirecTV customer for years and kept hearing about all the features I was missing and decided to switch to Comcast. Big mistake. Horrible customer service and the DVR software they have (some horrible Microsoft software) is the flakiest piece of crap I have ever seen. So maybe the DirecTV DVR is not the greatest, but believe me, there is MUCH worse out there.
I keep hearing that Comcast is working with Tivo to offer the Tivo software on the Comcast DVR, but nothing official...man, I really need to get back to a decent DVR. If only the S3 wasn't so expensive... - AlKo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess I'm pretty happy with my old SD DirecTivo. Of course, I've hacked it and put two 120GB drives in it which is a tremendous amount for SDTV. I guess I would be more upset with lack of Series2 features if I felt the need to actually use them. Satellite scheduling updates are fine with me. But I feel that once I make the jump to HD, I'll be dying to leave my DTV contract for FIOS TV.
- gavdana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My first HR20-700 was DOA; tuner #2 was fried out of the box. Getting a replacement was a nightmare, and I had to actually begin the cancellation process before D* would get of their asses and ship a replacement.
That said, the replacement works. It's a tad buggy, but a hell of a lot cheaper than a TiVo Series 3. - RealHyperX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My biggest issue with the non-tivo DVRs is that you cant set to record non-repeats. Unless someone here knows how to do it. I like DTV over all, but I am running two older tivo sets, one newer HD one but it cant be upgraded to the newer tivo software (the folders, speed, etc). And the new DVR kinda sucks. Maybe they will sign up with Tivo again.
- PhantomZmoove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tivo was the only reason I went to Directv anyway. I still have two Directivo units and will keep the service as long as they support it. If for some reason I can't at some point in the future, well, guess I'll have to deal with that problem when I come to it.
- Pegasus_Strain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason I got my DirecTiVo s because it was the only way (at the time) to get a dual tuner TiVo. This is important in my household. However I am constantly missing HME. Now that we are ready to go HD at our house, I am re-thinking my commitment to Direct TV. I mean heck, why not just get a HD TV drop Direct TV and re-attach the cord for local channels only. Get the rest of my content from Netflix and Torrents ;)
I am tired of seeing all the TiVo stuff that I can not have! Are you listening DTV?
On the other hand, living in the Pacific Northwest, we lost power for 7 days back in December because of a wind storm. My neighbors lost their power and cable for even longer. Me? Well our generator kicked in and we had power and entertainment along with local news. A situation where having a dish was useful. - markrubi2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had several problems which are well known with the HR20. I have the current software installed. I restarted the DVR in the system settings menu, and since then I have not had a single problem.
- gr00vy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nothing works as well as TiVo. Nothing quite as expensive as it, but it is the only thing that works.
The only decent HD solution is that DirecTivo H10-250. Bought years ago, and as flawed as it is, it works, really. Have tried other boxes, and it just doesn't work. This is a complicated problem that is difficult to get fully correct. There are a lot of things that just need to work, that you don't know until you have TiVo.
Someday I am probably going back to local cable and a series 3. I am glad I have that option going forward. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nothing like True Tivo!! even people at Tivo don't know that! bunch of dumbasses working there in marketing department!
- sho222, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@dree
You were totally right. Pressing "2" again on the now playing list fixed it. I guess I need to get my hands on a manual - I had no idea that function existed. - theanimation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, it sucks pretty bad. We are going to try formatting our R15 this weekend. Support said that if it still isn't fixed after that, they will replace it.
Too bad they will just replace it with another R15. I've read that we would be better off with an R10...
Other than the DVR sucking, I still love DirecTV. Beats the alternatives any day. - maximusrex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't have any experience with HD yet but I have had nothing but good things to say about DirectTV. I've had Comcast and Dish Network as well and DTV is the best. They have the most channels and OK to good service. I do have to say though that dropping Tivo was a HUGE mistake. One that I hope they fix.
- plncrzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm also pretty happy with my DirecTV service. I have a DirecTiVo and it does rather piss me off that most of the really great features are disabled on the DTiVo (come on, I still have to use a phone line to dial-in because they've disabled the ethernet!).
I've tried alternatives such as HD Cable service through my local provider (Comcast) and I was absolutely appalled at the horrid quality of their product. The "Moxi" service (which is what they call their DVR system) was probably the single worst thing I've had the displeasure of using in probably 10 years. It was ridiculously slow, the interface was beyond stupid... and the picture quality on most of the "standard" channels was TERRIBLE compared to even standard-def DirecTV.
I'm anxiously awaiting a major change by DirecTV before I upgrade to their HD package (I get all my local broadcasts anyway...). If AT&T gets the lead out and gets rolling with their U-Verse IPTV service I will definitely try it out. Hopefully they can get some of the kinks worked out before it gets to my area. Otherwise, I'll probably hold onto my standard def DirecTiVo until DirecTV pries it from my cold, dead fingers, or until it breaks. - danielman94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have DirecTV, it is okay. I am not saying "ZOMG it is the bestest...", but it is alright. We have one of their cheap DVRs, it is extremely sluggish. You press the button to see recorded shows, and it takes over six seconds just to load the menu. The rest is okay. It is much better than the local cable service, who charges 45 bucks for 40 channels...ugg. Also, local cable thought it would be really fun if they just dropped the cable, saying we didn't pay...twice.
- zlajoie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can attest to their bad customer service. I was suppose to get a new HD-PVR from them last Wednesday that I had ordered three weeks prior. I waited around that morning until the end of the 4 hour window that they said the installer would be there. I called and they told me that I wasn't even scheduled. Then they told me the next install date I could have was a month and a half away. I really wish DirecTV wasn't my only real option since they offer the packages I want otherwise I would go with somebody else. From the comments in the article, I'm glad I didn't get the receiver.
