- kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -6/+78Thanks all - we have more cool stuff coming soon - this is just the beginning.. small steps.
- jayadelson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Digg was completely overhauled. The entire back engine, the algorithms, architecture, features, UI, etc... So everything is in beta. However, we're pretty happy with performance so far, so we think it won't be long.
- dan_robo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Thanks for clearing that up Kevin, am sick of all these digg bashers, digg's a great site am on it all the time checking out the new tech stories and I'm sure that the V3 will be a huge hit
Keep up the good work!!! - kilps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Read the article: "Once the bugs are squashed the beta status of the site will be lifted and everyone will be free to browse."
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Great work with everything. Could you possibly fix the comments? Sometimes they won't allow editing...
- domr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9areoplandedigger:
When I say I can't edit comments, I mean (1) the edit box is less than 1 line high for me, making it almost impossible to see what I'm typing, and (2) when I submit, I just get an "errror updating comment" message - which could be a little more helpful. - domr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Simple question - why?
Is v3 actually considered 'live' or still in beta? - domr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9(Replying to my own comment because I still can't edit comments in v3)
Next time there's a big update, would you consider an extended public beta testing period in parallel with the old site? There are obviously still several bugs to be worked out, and I'm sure that given testing on a larger scale these could have been picked up sooner - and with less impact on the site as a whole. - kilps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8domr you can edit you comments - for a certain amount of time (3 min) after you submit them.
the idea is that you can correct any small mistakes you made but it ensures that you don't change your viewpoint or anything like that just becaus of what other people have said. Even if people mod you down people still read what you have to say and it all contributes to the overall discussion. Imagine if everyone just changed their comments because of what other people said in reply - there would be no debate or argument, which kinda makes the whole commenting system worthless ;) - fifty50, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I finally registered today because I was a "digg freeloader" for too long. I've been enjoying Digg as an RSS feed (and thus an OS X screen saver) for over a year and finally decided I would like to contribute and/or participate in the digging. The beta features of v3 may have been a contributor, but I visit Digg way too often during a day to no longer participate. Maybe the time allowed to edit a comment could be extended a little bit.
- illicium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's only beta because practically EVERY web2.0 app is in a faux-beta stage
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Domr: Heh, your red avatar really catches my eyes. ;)
- kylebeckman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4RSS is still screwy in Thunderbird! Every story that is in a "beta" category can't be viewed regardless of if you're registered or not.
- c0dy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It actually shows up on the Category icons if you're not registered/not logged in... That's what got me into registering in the first place (not that I'm regretting it :)).
- Piper7865, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm still undecided as to whether I like the new design or not .. though with the new areas people will now be able to stop complaining "this isn't tech related". Also..... and this is entirely off topic and pointed at Kevin ...... when the hell is the new Broken epi comin out?
- Baddox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My original story (the one being clarified here) was in no way an anti-digg post. I still like digg, and even if the registration requirement stayed, I wouldn't be too upset. I just thought it was interesting; the comments made it seem anti-digg. Hopefully Kevin doesn't hate me now, but if he does, the feeling's not mutual.
- cerisaac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree that the site needs to be labeled as a "Beta". The label will clarify why there are so many bugs, general weirdness and slowness right now. Overall this is a great step in the right direction but many users may become discouraged if they are unaware of the current status on here. The Digg Blog needs to be updated more often and with more concise information as well.
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The site now has major areas that are linked to from the front page (and hyped in many v3 articles) that are restricted to non-regsitered users. Now you can say its a beta - but pretty much everything is these days so that means very little to people. The fact is that it is teaser content that prompts you for registration if you try to view it. Personally speaking - when I come across a site that does this to me, I simply move along - its annoying and not something I will generally put up with. If you don't want non-registered people to click on those areas, you should hide the links to the content.
- domr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's fair enough, but I have to say this update was slightly over-hyped for what it is. It might have been nice to actually mention the beta status somewhere in the pre-launch publicity - and on the site now.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with having alpha/beta (or gamma in Flickr's case) status, but I think a lot of people expected the bugs to have been worked out for launch - simply based on the PR that was done for it. - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Notice the original article about the login disappeared, to be replaced with this one. Obviously, many reacted negatively to the login. Is it really a "beta issue" or did we bitch slap them?
If, it goes away, then it is only a marketing screw up like "New Coke". I can forgive them. - motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Good question, but either way I became a member this morning just so I can have access to the "restricted" areas. :-)
- spin-docta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thank you P.R. Kevin.
- dankoleary, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Kevin-
Good call. It will be interesting to see how an influx of new users changs the digg community.
On an unrealted note, any thoughts about making a .css option or alternative view back to the old style for registered members? - c0pperhead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Restricting access is simply restricting your future customers / visitors.
I am a registered user, I however, never post any interesting articles, and rarely do I comment, I know 4 other people who frequent your site that are not users, and 1 other one that is.
If they knew that access was restricted, it would not prompt them to set up accounts, honestly I almost never log in anyway. Social freeloader? maybe. If I was penalized for not logging in, guess what, I wouldn't come here, this site would go back to being a very small community.
just my thoughts, however unimportant they may be. - valkraider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes.
Or at least raise the threshold for the "front page", my RSS feed is hideously mucked up now. - timber_tract, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been on and off the site all day while at work and at home. All I have to say is good job on the roll out folks. It has been pretty seamless from this long time user's experience.
- scottevans, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3couple of things i saw. the whole page now reloads when you mod someone's comment up or down. didn't used to do this. that's sort of irritating. also, the bury story javascript does not appear to be working
- Krusz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't like that you can not change it to show all stories. if I remove tech, then it defaults to viewing all stories, but if I have tech as one of my containers then I have to click "view all" to see the other container's topics. I think it should default to "view all" not just tech, and I can turn off everything but tech if I want. I just hate that extra click I have to make every time I return to the homepage.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the burry and report problems button dosent work right with opera..... i click on it and it jumps from left to right and i try to follow it and it moves again.....
- M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only when it adds nothing (and in some cases removes) content.
- Kev1000000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Digg v3 has great potential... If you can get most of the big suggestions implemented and fix all of the problems, Digg v3 will be great!
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1am i the only one who thinks that digg vanity links, site updates, and feature suggestions should have their own category?
- domr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gratuitious self promotion.
(I learned everything I know from some guy called Kevin) ;) - kylebeckman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Once the bugs are squashed the beta status of the site will be lifted and everyone will be free to browse."
And...
Last time I checked, registration was free. - loquito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is lame. If you can't consider locations outside of the US to live then you deserve what you get.
- CheeseheadDave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4In the last Diggnation podcast, Kevin showed off some "Digg Live!" features to better visualize what stories were hot, getting dugg, getting commented on, etc. Perhaps those are what he's talking about here.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://digg.com/design/Digg_3.5
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I thought that linking to a blog was verboten?
Just kidding. - shamanking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So when are we going to see Digg labs? i realy want that "Diggspy on crack" lol
- G33k0ft3chz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just summited a story and I saw the vertifacation box and said WTF..
But thanks for Telling this to us Kevin!
At least this will cut down alot of Spambots and other kinds of bots. - Darq1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Thanks for the clarification. Hope to see v3 fully up and running soon.
- shadedream, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good to know. Liking the new design so far... though were there this many ads previously? maybe they just seem more prevalent now... but thats about the only part I dont like.
- Ruckus21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The damn thing has been out for less than 12 hours now and you people are bitching like you have some God given right to this service. The reason Digg has been so popular is the great job they've doing to give the people what they want. Obviously not everybody is going to be happy but Jesus Christ, give it a little time. CHILL
- theporchmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2digg v3 is PIMPOLA!
- trigger0219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0They should remove the beta content from the RSS feed, or have two.... it would have solved lots of confusion with the lurkers...
- kilps, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Seconded - I am sure all of the team are working around the clock to iron out the problems as the arise, good luck to you
- XLostSpartanX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wait, which parts of the site are still beta? Anyways Digg is always and forever a great site.
- luaplevap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Agreed with c0pperhead, sometimes I'd just rather read cool techy news than state blatantly ignorant political opinions and pick arguments.
- c0pperhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You know what, at least it's not like Fark, I will never be a true "Farker" becuase you have to pay to get all the news items, the ones on the main page = only about half of what is actually listed.
