- ryland2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Here are his words- The removal of the "Who Befriended Me" page was actually an oversight just in the navigation. As others have noted the functionality is still there just with no way of actually getting there without typing in the URL. This feature will be back in the next few days.(Sorry about the double post, couldn't get to edit in time)
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Is anyone else having trouble with the upcoming stories Cloud view? It hasn't worked for me since the changes.
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"wide screen my ass" Ewwww…
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12... you do know what Google looks like, don't you?
- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The thing about the podcasts becoming popular and then just sticking to the top bugs me. Yeah I get the fact that no one has time to listen to/watch a podcast every time a new one is submitted but can't there be a way so that the people with lesser know podcasts (like me) can get some coverage on websites? All you see is TWiT and Homestar and Ask a Ninja and that one Frank show but there aren't any "New" or "Just Released" podcast sections (on digg, iTunes or otherwise) and for no-names like me, it's next to impossible to get your name out there. IMHO it presents a serious problem when places like iTunes don't "cycle" podcasts off the front page. TWiT and ABC have been on the home page of iTunes for months. Why can't they be on for a week (like musical artists) and then be cycled off with new and different podcasts (like musical artists). I just know that there are good and innovative podcasts out there on the web that aren't made by the big 4 media companies, Rev3 and TWiT.tv that I want to listen to, but have no way of finding them, and until someone figure out a way (or simply implements a way) that we can see undiscovered podcasts, I guess my show is just going to be just as unpopular as ever.
Can Digg implement an algorithm that will take all user submitted feeds (say I submit my show feed one time), and then every time I add an episode it will enter a "New Episodes" section of Digg, (which would be like the "Upcoming Stories" of the front page), and then we can Digg those episodes up to the front page or they can fade away from that list after 24 hours. That way TWiT would be on the front page only the day a new episode is released and my show would follow the same rules, but would at least would have a chance to move past page 4.
Hope that made sense... - Enchirito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm sure there are many checks and balances in the Top 10 algorithm to keep it updating at a good pace.
Let the digg team handle that. It's their job after all. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Good job stating the obvious! (Not to mention the stuff already explained on the Digg blog)
- ryland2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13INNACURATE, Danial Burka himself said that the missing "Befriended" was a mistake, He said they would tweek a few of the friends features to get it back to normal
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Digg is now made for big widescreen monitors. If you have a large monitor the site will now adjust the content so you can make use of your entire screen."
Antialias is exactly right. Just filling up space doesn't make the experience any better. In fact, in this case, it makes it worse because reading a 15" long line of text is much more difficult than a 4" long line of text. - TruthElixirX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Same here. This was my favorite digg feature as well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't dislike that as much as the inability to search my own diggs
And also, I don't know if this is just me, but the volume control for the javascript video playing thing doesn't work. - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5earlier, i wrote an article on my o-so-overly-trafficked blog about fixing some of the gaming.
http://www.djlosch.com/post_retrieve.php?pid=73
it's nice to see that even though i highly doubt my article was read by any of the people that matter, they did implement it so:
-- if a site is slammed, there seems to be some auto-duggmirror. i've gone to 2 articles today that went straight to duggmirror from the front page
-- reducing the game-ability of friends
-- posting more stories on the front page.
now if only some of the other things were implemented to dump the mob mentality. - vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I wonder about the possible popularity feedback loop that the "Top 10" list may create. The top 10 stories are given prominence which causes people to check them out and digg which then makes them more popular which then keeps them on the Top 10 list. What keeps the list fresh? Perhaps a 24hr time limit?
- webtickle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Has not worked for me either.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wouldn't say that the new design takes better advantage of a wide screen. If the text width just expands to fill the screen, it becomes much less readable. support for multiple fixed width columns would have made better use of the space(much harder to implement with cross browser compatibility I realize)
- seandfeeney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I liked the old login better! it was good when you didn't have to go to another page just to login.
Other than that I have no complaints. - mrlost117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thank god, that was the one change I disliked
I feel much better now - badfrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nope, and it sucks! Gimme my cloud!
- fiddelm3742, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yup no cloud as stated above. Also my Live BookMarks in FF 2.0 aren't working either......
- ludwik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They also removed option to search only within stories from somebody's profile. I've dugg about 1 000 stories and when I wanted to find one of them again I used to use digg's search with option "ludwik Diggs" checked. Now this future is gone.
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+399% of the videos on Digg are embedded YouTube clips surrounded by the submitter's Adsense-packed blog. This guy is upset that those videos will now display directly in Digg. It's no different for YouTube - it's an embedded clip either way. So, I guess he's upset about lost Adsense revenue?
- phoenixp3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Imagine what the next diggnation would look like. "This week, the most dugg stories were about Digg and an announcement I made, so let's review all that. - Alex what do you think?" - K. Rose
- miles32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If you dont want to read it dont read it
- miles32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Chill out dude just ignore the story and move on. If you dont want to read it dont read it
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
It's their job after all.
Famous last words. - Crazyiodudo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Am I the only one skeptical about Digg's move to allow you to view the videos off the Digg site? I thought Digg was supposed to be about driving traffic to the original page and not hosting the content.
- mklopez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think by "selected partners" he meant "those sites where is technically possible to fetch the video and play it from our web page". That is relatively simple to do (using javascript and AJAX) for sites like Youtube and Google Video. I dont think these sites gave specific permission to Digg to do this, but by allowing their videos to be played remotely, they gave an implicit permission to everyone who has the technical know-how to do it.
- nicerobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree Archeologist. Not being able to search my own diggs (or someone else's?) sucks ass!
- TheSkinsFactory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm at 2560 x 1600... am I the only one who doesn't see the text filling up my screen? I assumed the site resized. It still looks fixed width to me.
- mklopez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Since the new change, they removed the videos from all the RSS feeds and other pages that contain news, and relegated them to their own pages / feeds. I found is more difficult to find about new videos when browsing the "upcoming" pages unless I remember to specifically click on the "videos" link. I know that a lot of people hate to see videos intermingled with other types of stories, but now newsworthy (digg-worthy?) videos will not get the exposure they need to get promoted.
- sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His point about the video section keeping users on Digg is missing the point. If you watch the video, you'll notice that Kevin says that watching the videos on Digg is supported "with selected partners" or something to that effect. This would imply that the video hosting sites have allowed Digg to do this, meaning that people who don't want their videos shown inline on Digg won't have to.
- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Top 10 was a great addition - it definitely feeds itself though. Stories are going to get tons of diggs now with that feature. I wonder too how it turns over.
I think the other sidebar box in Upcoming ("Hot in All Topics") contributes much more to the site than the Top 10 list does. In fact, I was hoping they would have gone a step further and added a third dedicated tab - "Popular Upcoming" - in between All news and Upcoming. That would bring more casual front page users into the submit-to-front page process. Popular upcoming is still buried beneath two or three mouse clicks.
...in fact, after using this new version quite a bit the past few days, I've noticed it takes a lot more clicks to get everywhere. - phoenixp3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At first I told myself that YouTube itself would loose ad revenue from seeing videos directly into Digg. However it is exactly the same as if you embeded the video into a website. YouTube does make money out of it. They do hope you go to the source next time to see the videos.
In all Digg is keeping people on the site and I don't find it too bad. I would mind a kind of frame on top of the dugg site, so I can start reading and see if I want to Digg it or not. On some occasions I open a few stories in background tab (Opera) and read them later. I forget to digg some of them... More Adsense revenue for Digg... I won't mind for now. - JSchwage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The new fluid width Digg layout actually doesn't make use of all screen estate if you're using a high resolution, such as 1600x1200, like I am. It only expands to take up about 75% of my browser window.
- pyrates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh this is so easily bypassed. Just make sure you have their msn, or aim, or yahoo, etc handle and have them notify everyone in their friends list under the group digg for example that you just posted a story, for them to digg it. Turning off that feature won't stop it at all. And yes I'm now aware that it was turned off by mistake.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is indeed a Cult of Digg. But if that's what people like to talk about, that's okay, I usually just skip those when I see them.
- MistressRoninS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wogna, maybe try writing to digg about it, you make a valid point. Hate to see your ideas go to waste.
- MistressRoninS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not so sure about a article on a site called "search engine land" - but anyway, I did notice the "who added me as a friend" tab missing, thanks for the heads up on it being an oversight. I am wondering about the video being on digg too. Can't you tube just site them for not having permission to display their full content in video? I imagine that will come next. Especially with companies manufacturing web crawlers that find copy right violations.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was using a Greasemonkey script to address this, but of course now it doesn't work.
- dogman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You Can No Longer See Your "Friends" The Digg friends feature was the main way people were gaming the system. Users friend each other on Digg and digg each others' stories, which makes it easy for users to get stories to the homepage. Not any more!
Friends can't see friends. - pyrates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where did the ajax style categories go? Now I gotta click a category... wait for the page to refresh... then click the sub category I wanted. I liked the old style of it damnit. But other then that I like the new layout.
- johnie1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5isn't it about time we had digg as a ***** topic ?
i read the newspaper for news, i don't read the newspaper to see how ***** paper is made. - david76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The new login also doesn't seem to align correctly in IE7. When I attempted to submit a comment while not logged in, the "overlay" was off by about 50% of the browser width and the Login button was actually below the bottom of the browser. Since there was no scrollbar I had to just tab and hope I was on the Login button and hit space.
- Billdozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Am I only the one who doesn't give two ***** about what anyone here thinks every time the site gets a face-lift?
- webwiz1986, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1MY EYES!!!!
wide screen format Digg is not a bad idea. I may not have a wide screen monitor, but just knowing that they took the time to care about some other guy makes me fell warm inside. Just as long as I don't have to see your rear. - offwhite, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Can we stop digging stories about Digg.com?
It is like tuning into the news and the news anchor tells you about HIS day instead of the actual news. Create a special Digg.com only section if you must. Keep it off the homepage. - Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2wide screen my ass
- mattmollysdad, on 10/12/2007, -18/+0I don't like the new colors (sage green and sea foam green) with the muddy blue at the top of the page... why the change... why is Digg trying to look like Google?

What is Digg?
Check out the new & improved
