- MikeSetera, on 07/02/2008, -3/+43Golly gee, if only there was a way to block advertisements though some sort of firefox extension...
- saxreturns, on 07/02/2008, -2/+38It's such a shame I won't be able to see any of their carefully-placed, targeted ads.
- da5idblacksun, on 07/01/2008, -3/+30Dugg for an interesting topic but I think from listening to Anton that this can't really be exploited like that.
- iNunchuk, on 07/01/2008, -3/+29Ah, but Web 2.0 Monetization can be kicked in the face by one archaic but useful "Desktop Class" application. Adblock Plus.
- benologist, on 07/01/2008, -3/+28I just can't be too optimistic about the recommendation engine. Within a month it'll have transformed into just another spam mechanism and we'll all be turning it off or not going to that page because spammers will be controlling what we see on it.
The other real problem is there's 15000 stories to choose from, but 14900 are pure spam. That is the problem that should have been addressed, it's a huge problem with the upcoming section and it's why there's a "need" for recommendations. - OSXpert, on 07/02/2008, -0/+16I'll save digg the time and effort of sifting through the data to figure out how to better advertise to us:
Have the Snorg T-shirt girls wear less clothing. - inactive, on 07/01/2008, -1/+14The only way I could see the system being abused is if advertisers "stalk" individuals. All they would have to do is look at your profile, and digg a lot of stories that you have dugg... then eventually start digging stories in their own favor.
The problem with this specific technique is that it would be quite inefficient... because you would be less effective with more "stalkees"
... well, unless they were able to also see who also diggs similar stories
wait... that would happen anyways to the stalker's account.
yeah. we're pretty much ***** :P - HCviolence, on 07/02/2008, -2/+12Jeez It's easy to advertise to me. Just put the SnorgTee girl in every ad.
- wildfire, on 07/02/2008, -2/+10Codenamed "MrBabyMan 2.0".
- mlbwebdesign, on 07/02/2008, -0/+7Is it like amazon's recommendations? I'm a bit skeptic. I bought 1 rubber dildo 3 years ago as a gag gift and I get at least 1 email a week saying something like 'Since you bought a large rubber dildo, you might also like '
- picpak, on 07/02/2008, -0/+7I guess I'd rather have this on the front page constantly than Obama and pictures of ***** cats.
- BlockedUser, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6"15000 stories to choose from, but 14900 are pure spam"
What do you mean benologist by "spam"? do you mean that the stories are trying to market something? Im trying to finds some that are doing that but i think Digg does a good job of getting the top stories that are Dugg to show up in Upcoming and Popular queries. Most people wont Digg spam or an advertisement (unless its the subject of ridicule or interest). Therefore they just get lost in the sea of "1 Diggs". However you can't get confused by what is an advertisement or marketing scheme, and what is a 'press release'. Many Digg stories source from companies who release news on their latest products and services. Its up to you if you think its unique, or bull. Some people find the cooling pipe technology from ATI material worth Digging.
Just simply wondering what you mean and am hoping you can elaborate. - Borgcube636, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5I'm a bit frustrated with the 'Upcoming (Beta)" section. Idk why, it still seemed broken. Only one article showed up one time. It's a beta, but still, the layout was a bit confusing.
- smmakira, on 07/01/2008, -3/+8Bravo. I also think the upcoming section is broken in design. The front page is just a blogspam ring. I'm looking at you mrbabyman!
- dinostabOMG, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Hm, alright - but won't we be able to block out individual "diggers like you" once we notice that they're advertisers?
- Vindexus, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5Am I the only one who doesn't really care if the ads I see are targeted towards me?
- Acglaphotis, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4what ads?
- Me1000, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4I still think we need to place a few upcoming stories in the middle of the home page so they get more exposure...
Most people dont/wont go to the upcoming section at all! - cadmiumpaint, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4never pay attention to ads anyhow
- Yage2006, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Not to be a wet blanket but because of the disgusting acne and wrinkle cream advertisements I had to block all the adds.
Hopefully they will be careful as to what adds get on the site if they don't want others to be tempted to do the same or install add-block ect. - arjie, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Me too! Do we have to wear black latex and fight in the rain to decide which one is the Real Thing? Or can we just bend spoons.
- GhostyBoy, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3You mean everyone doesn't have these beta features? Wow...I'm the CHOSEN ONE!
- birdly, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4I don't want the engine to get to know me!
- legendxx, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Can the recommendation engine organize all these ***** who have trashed digg in the last couple years and delete their accounts? If so, I'm all for it.
- Acglaphotis, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4I got picked for the beta by a random algorithm :D!
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3yes, that would be the overlooked flaw in my logic. Thanks for pointing that out. It is still important for users to identify this behavior, so don't bury the comment please.
- arcticblue, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3I've been suggesting this for a while. Hiding recently submitted stories in the upcoming section only guarantees that the only way people will see it is if it gets shout spammed all to hell.
- exec0extreme, on 07/02/2008, -2/+5https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/186 ...
- Thrash16, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2hey, wait a minute...i just got this one too! maybe its all just a big fat lie maybe its not really an engine but just the articles Kevin wants us to watch! WERE HIS SLAVES! WE ARE HIS MIND SLAVES! We gotta-[connection terminated]
- PopcornDave, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Well don't keep us in suspense, what were they?
- Twee, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2I was thinking the exact same thing. Camino on the Mac even has ad-blocking built-in.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2"friends" don't get factored into the recommendation algorithm, by the sounds of it. I don't know if this technique would be all that effective.
then again, the 'MBM's are somehow going to have some strange consequences for the recommendation algorithm... I don't know how that is going to pan out until it is released - Newsdude, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2I think we're going to have to see how this plays out. I don't think the current digg crew will "sell us out" but in time, if there is a new owner, we might have problems
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Digg users about to become cash cows generating cash for digg.
- MOJIRA, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I would rather get ads that for products or services that I'm interested in than crap that I don't care about.
- Daniel591992, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Or they might digg stories from the most popular users (kevin r., babyman, etc...) and hope to get a lot of people that way...
- aries3161, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2I have it and you don't ah ha ah ha!
- chadell, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1A recommendation is just that. You only respond if it is relevant to you. The onus is on you.
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2Same thinking went into the development of email, never thinking that any type of commercialism would be generated from sending people emails.
- proficient, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2I perceived what you did as well, there.
- freedomdigg, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1good
- RickStarr, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1How many times do you actually look at ads. If Digg wants to add more ads so they can keep Digg free, I don't care. Why shouldn't Digg make money?
- PopcornDave, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1What exactly did you choose in your story options to get ***** cats in your selections?
- freedomdigg, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1good

- LightSpeed4, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Buried because lame article is filled with annoying buzzwords.
"Combine the web 2.0 with the social networking and flux capacitor and you get an organization of the advertisers recommendation engine!" - BlockedUser, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I think you are confused. Those are just stories that get re-dugg or have been dugg on different sites, but are the same story at its roots. When you are saying SPAM, i believe you are referring to spamdexing, and i don't think Digg does this. It just so happens that there are 100 Obama Likes Pancakes articles on the web with Digg integrations. So you will see variations of a story time and time again. However it isn't a scheme to get you to read it a million times. Its actually doing the right thing by doing this. It WILL happen when you have an operating system like Digg that is an open network built by the public.
________________________________
Spamdexing involves a number of methods, such as repeating unrelated phrases, to manipulate the relevancy or prominence of resources indexed by a search engine, in a manner inconsistent with the purpose of the indexing system.[1] [2] Some consider it to be a part of search engine optimization, though there are many search engine optimization methods that improve the quality and appearance of the content of web sites and serve content useful to many users.[3] Search engines use a variety of algorithms to determine relevancy ranking. Some of these include determining whether the search term appears in the META keywords tag, others whether the search term appears in the body text or URL of a web page. Many search engines check for instances of spamdexing and will remove suspect pages from their indexes. Also people working for a search-engine organization can quickly block the results-listing from entire websites that use spamdexing, perhaps alerted by user complaints of false matches. The rise of spamdexing in the mid-1990s made the leading search engines of the time less useful. -
