Digg ruled by kids?
pandia.com — Neil Patel explained that the people who rule Digg and Stumbleupon are kids or they like to behave like kids. They will joke around they will slam you. So be warned.
- 1170 diggs
- digg it
- Leomarth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+177What he means to say is "Most of the 'net."
A lot of people who either are kids, or act like kids, get a personal sense of power from the Internet because they can do and say anything they want, without retribution. Everyone knows you can't send a punch to the face in an email, so they feel they can get away with it.- howtogeek, on 10/12/2007, -7/+114People are stupid. Not sure where the news is.
- sexyjill, on 10/12/2007, -19/+66@ Leomarth
True, but who are we to judge this behaviour? Most of the people I interact with on a daily basis in my real life are cold, bitter, lifeless drones who lack a sense of humour. I love being able to come online and immerse myself in a world when anyone of any age can kick back and act like a kid. - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -11/+196Neil Patel is a poopy-butt.

- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39None of you read the article, did you? It's just some spammers guide to digg, with (lol) use of it's own advice - trolling through the description.

- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think it has a lot to do with the fact that you can be fairly certain you aren't going to see them again or even in person.
Also, I would say it's more the web than the net that has the problem with people being idiots :) - novaneil, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Novaneil Patel
- TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8I just do it for teh lulz. Moar lulz.
- dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -19/+4im 16 none of my stories ever made it to the front page STFU FTW!
- Trance750, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I can buy that theory. The internet, despite the huge amounts of information and resources, can also breed the very worst of humanity. People can behave as cruel or mean-spirited as they'd wish, behind the privacy and protection of a computer screen, knowing full well they are safe from any retaliation or confrontation.
But get these same people face-to-face and have to defend their comments or actions, and they'd be peeing their pants. - EverAB, on 10/12/2007, -10/+33For me its the opposite. I'm 15 and love coming to the internet, where I won't be judged by a number and will be more judged on by my replies, intellectual level and so forth.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36"For me its the opposite. I'm 15 and love coming to the internet, where I won't be judged by a number and will be more judged on by my replies, intellectual level and so forth."
That may be true (and I respect that) but their are a lot of people on Digg now that have 1 track, bias minds that won't take part in intellectual debate. Instead they will digg down anything they don't like and erase traces of valid comments because they don't agree with it. - over9, on 10/12/2007, -29/+1Hi guys, please visit my site
http://www.modernlifeisrubbish.co.uk/ - DoomII, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4I pity those that need the internet to create an alter ego.
Be on the net how you are in real life or just kill yourself now. - Ransomowris, on 10/12/2007, -15/+11I hate the stereotype that all people under 18 years of age are idiots. I'm 15 years old, and while I may be an exception, I'm sure not all of my generation sounds like "omg hay guyz wuts goin on lolz!!!????"
I think judging a person just based on their age is stupid, and can only hurt you. At least give everybody a chance to prove themselves. They may be an idiot, but at least you gave them a chance. - hackajar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2yes I can send a punch to the face with an email! What you think I can't? MOOOOOM! - BryanUT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12So why hasn't this site suffered the Digg Effect?
*****, I'm 50 years old, can we take him down? - wheres, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7the article isn't even about digg and stumbleupon users being kids... it's more about how to get lots of traffic to your blog

Wow can you say this story is spam....
Although they are right about submitting your story and the perfect time helps you hit front page. - Jabertsohn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I am 18 and constantly being dugg down by kids, they call me oldie and poke fun at my aged appearance. True Story.
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4thats kind of stupid. Because most adults dont agree with kids, the only way they can slam the kids is by making fun of their age. Maybe some do act immature, but I think its just because people never seem to get along. So they start hitting below the belt.
- iloveroundtable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Digg may or may not be kids, but if you read through the comment section of any digg article, no matter what it is about, people are constantly trying to one up each other and/or see who can be the most clever.
That behavior is juvenile, but it's the whole internet ***** theory. - hootpie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Everyone knows you can't send a punch to the face in an email, so they feel they can get away with it."

Digg isn't really designed for intellectual debate. I can digg your reply up or down with one click, but if I want to respond to it beyond that I have to scroll up, click reply on the post you replied to, and then type "@thatsmyaibo" so you'll know I'm replying to you. - twit987, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2SEO aka Spammers are always trying to get their worthless crap on digg.
SEO = fancy way of saying search engine spammer. - ramiro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Digg is full of little pukoid teenagers (no matter what their actual age is) so I just pick some of the better users here and there and add them to my friends list. They are few precious gems in a gigantic mound of manure.
- jables, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Someone please step in if you disagree but i think Digg is more like a bunch of geeks who fight over who is the biggest geek. I mean if you look at the comments and see when another geek corrects another geeks grammer (I'm sure someone will be correcting me so go for it) it increasingly gets build up into something else and eventually everyone sounds like a bunch of kids. Basically what I'm trying to say is that the Digg users are really smart people but we go from being smart nerds to smartass kids. Digg me up or down I don't care just commenting on what I've seen in the comments since sept 05'

* Submit storys about Al Sharpton, Ubuntu, Wii, iPhone and atheism
* Use great titles and descriptions (AMAZING, AWESOME, even TOP 10)
* Become a top user by creating alot of accounts, digg yourself to the frontpage and you will gain friends
* Submit at the right time (submit seems to work at best, when everybody is bashing something)- pjkli, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@Copperhe4d
You just hit the nail on the head.
If you don't submit something or make positive comments about anything that has a fanboy base (ie Al Sharpton, Ubuntu, Wii, iPhone, atheism, or anything else that makes these kids feel like they know something) then you get ridiculed and dugg down. - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The fact that nobody read the article means that most of the people who dugg/commented and dugg comments on this thread are EPIC FAIL at the internet.

- p0tent1al, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Digg is mostly technology, I don't think kids are into sophisticated technology so much as they are into showing off themselves like exhibitionists, a la Myspace. If you mean immature people with immature comments, this is anywhere popular you go on the web.
Topic Buried.- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Thats not true. I am a junior computer engineering student and my school has programs for kids from local schools to play with things like robotics programming in Labview or C and stuff. They pick it up quick, and are soon more proficient in the languages and design techniques than the actual engineering students or even professors. Adressing someone on his or her grammar is usually a bid of weakness by.. well you obviously.. for not being able to reply to that view and/or message in a more respectful way.
I find people whining about grammar rather tedious. I think it's illegal for any American to talk about correct grammar, lest they speak proper english themselves. There are no such things as errors in language, language is a way of communication. Language is always dynamic, remember that.

Any article titles that have the following words in the title is likely by one of kiddie punk wannabe's. Digg needs to add some of these words to the permanent block list for titles, I'm serious!
- BEST, COOLEST, HOTEST (almost all words ending in EST).
- AMAZING, AWESOME, COOL
- TOP XX
- EVER
Type of things that give a clue the comment is from some young punk:
- End of comment has a bunch of CAPITALIZED texting words like PLZ THNK K and so on to make them look K00L.
- At use of the words: retard, retarded, tard, owned.
- Using shortened versions of words commonly used in texting.
- Replacing numbers in words, such as THR33.
- Replacing similar sounding letters in words, such as K00L.
- Having a cool handle that most adults would not have: PimpMyBitches.
- Any manglish (mangled english) that make them sound like a rapper / hip hop wanna-be.
- Digg down people because you can't handle the truth.- DoomII, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0it takes one to know one, basement boy!

- orientis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm 25 and I use the word 'owned'. I'm a gamer of course, but more than that I think it is an appropriate word at times. Especially talking to another person. To be owned by someone is a demeaning thing, so to say to someone "I own you" is an effective slur or flame. Language is fluid. Owned has become part of the language. Deal with it, old timer.

- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why is the headline a question, there is no question about it, digg IS ruled by kids
- jacko1990, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Digg is ruled by 12 year old kids and retards. It is like some juvenile playground popularity contest, where it doesn't matter how valid an opposing point of view may be - all that matters is your ability to play to the mentality of the majority (or rather I should probably say, to the mentality of the mob).
It is literally the cesspit, sewers and underbelly of the Internet (and no it never used to be this way when it was only open to technical and fairly well educated sorts) where a vast body of people who's opinions generally are irrelevant and don't matter on a day to day basis, can pretend (if ever so briefly) that whatever it is they have to say, or whatever it is they think really has and relevance or significance to anything at all.
This may be an unpopular opinion perhaps - but it is still a demonstration of a valid one. Let's see how mature Diggers can be by allowing an unpopular opinion to exist without feeling the uncontrollable need to bury/suppress it. Even if it did happen in this instance, it is still a rarity for it to happen in most other cases.
And if that isn't a definition of immature, I have yet to find a better one.- DoomII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3so you post here because?
- jacko1990, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I post only rarely - and increasingly rarely as this supposed community deteriorates.
- jacko1990, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yes please do Digg me down, so everyone can see exactly what Digg is really about. (Or at least what it has become).
Don't get me wrong, Digg was (and I deliberately use 'was' in the past tense) a noble idea. A democracy of the people, governed entirely by the people, where no one person or group carried greater weight or importance than any other. Stories and viewpoints and issues of importance and relevance to our day, could be promoted to a level platform on which everyone could participate. Those opinions that were irrelevant and which didn't matter could be filtered by the community, so that only the smartest, most informed, the most thoughtful and most considered opinions would survive the scrutiny and critique of other diggers.
It was an ideal of democracy hewn straight from the text books and customs of the ancient Greeks.
However like all political ideas (since the principal if not the practice was political in origin), ultimately when taken to an extreme, it is undoubtedly likely to prove unsuccessful.
Digg was/is an exercise in unrestrained democracy, and like all such exercises in unrestrained democracy (or any similar political ideal, such as unrestrained communism, or fascism or whatever) eventually if left unchecked, it is likely only to eventually descend into a state of anarchy and chaos.
I cannot say what the original creator's of Digg true intentions were - but I can guess that they really were very honorable. But I would certainly be surprised if they were not in some way at least a little disappointed at what it has become. - DoomII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've thought about E-mocracy as well hmm the only way it could work .. or at least make it work less bad, is to track IP's and give a person just access to 1 account with his IP, or maybe even let them pay for one. So banning results in material loss. Because the kids with time can make 20 accs now and digg themselves up.
Then again there is fake ip..
One last counter method I had in mind was to let someone answer 4 questions about the linked article first, if he passes them, he's allowed to respond, for he would know enough in order to make a (sane) comment. But then you have the problem of who gets to make the questions..
I give up. - opusmarta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good thing you have to be above 18 to vote (in my country at least).
Not that it seems to help much either...hmm we're all doomed! - piesquared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well said, jacko. Something needs to be done about this lack of accountability inherent in places like DIGG. The only place that can be accomplished IMO is in the home. Parents need to stand up and hold their kids accountable for their actions. I'm sure only an adolescent would disagree with this.
DIGG was a terrific concept, until juvenielles were allowed to corrupt it.
- juliocgrajales, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I read the article is interesting but its funny how it seems most people just read the headline, anyway here are some links to the argue that if Digg is ruled by kids, than most kids on Digg are pretty smart and civil
http://digg.com/business_finance/BusinessWeek_Says_Digg_Comments_are_Surprisingly_Civil
Nonetheless why is there such a negative connotation with the word Kid, I mean I consider myself a kid, not a whiny snot nose type but just a cool dude that totally rebel against authority especially bureaucracy (but of course as a kid, I am still growing), it would be interesting to find what of the following philosophies most of the kid-hating people believe in, existential, rational or empiricism. Because it would say a lot.- Jabertsohn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Totally rebel against authority? You sound like the snot-nosed type to me.
- DoomII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hear hear (oh ***** I'm just 22 but I act like a kid! -6 to foncusion!
- Nobiting, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I'm 15 but I'm as big of a contributor to digg as any adult is. heck, ive made the home page 4 times already.
- sgstarling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8NOBITING,
The mistake you and many kids make is that by thinking any of this... this... 'contributing', somehow makes you an 'adult'. All this 'social networking' web stuff is bs. Do you really think the comments written on digg amount to a hill of beans? hint: they don't.
So much of these sites have so many kids writing on them. Just wait till they grow up and get real responsibilities... they'll be lucky to find an hour a day to 'surf'. And then when you do, it's mostly for quick info, and bargain internet shopping. Then it's back to real life. Work, taxes, sleep, work, taxes, sleep.
ack. I'm wasting my time too! :) - jacko1990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Rather like drinking in some parts of America, the legal age for holding an opinion should be set at a bare minimum of 21+.
- Jabertsohn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dugg up sgstarling, because you are my Grandad.
- sgstarling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8NOBITING,
- speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I know you are, but what am I?
- juliocgrajales, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Simply harsh I am going to tell my mommy and by rebel I mean just sitting my ass at home commenting on Digg posts
- Jabertsohn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Is no-one going to welcome the new children overlords? Slackers.
- aphexmandelbrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Watch out guys - the internet is serious.
- sgstarling, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1ooookkkkkk. you go on believing that... ;)
- charlietuna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This place is like a fricking digital neverland half the time.
- jacko1990, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1...
- BlackNapkins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Your average Digg user is a 15 year old who becomes an atheist to rebel against his parents under the guise as being "sophisticated" by reading Richard Dawkins, a mac user whose sole reason for switching is because "lol microsoft is for those business people like on the commercials" (if not a mac user an Ubuntu user who proclaims to all of his friends how much more advanced Linux is than their corporate windows box and proudly exclaims to the Digg world the newest list of Top 10 UNIX commands he found on a blog), an attention whore who counts his submissions and ridicules others because they promote their own site here when they don't know the first thing about economics.
On the other end is a lowly IT sector employee in cubicle 5ac who spends his money on thinkgeek.com so he can have a usb desklamp.
That leaves the hip college kid who is "ahead of the pack" because he is taking advanced Java classes while all his friends are taking business. He brands himself a "geek" because "no one understands him". He posts with joy a picture of "the best sunrise he has ever seen" HI RES (1040X768).
tl;dr
Will it blend?- Jabertsohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Which one are you?
- rouslan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is why I hate Digg. I have seen many good articles go unnoticed with ***** ending up on the front page. I also disapprove of the comment digg, since sometimes immature users digg comments down, thus hiding the message just because they disapprove or do not agree with it. Pure democracy has gone too far. I'm expecting diggers to digg this comment down to -200 diggs right now.
- Jabertsohn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Why are you complaining about it, why can't you just 'Walk Away'?
- clackerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0touche. i dugg you up.
- opusmarta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But the true entertainment about Digg (and the like) is to read all the stupid comments, thus making _me_ feel smarter :)
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is Digg really a failure though? Geenrally, moderation prevails and only offensive or senseless attacks are dugg down, while insightful comments are dugg up.
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry. I accidentally posted my above comment twice. Digg me down.
- mash8591, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Are YOUR KIDS installed with the latest version on Ubuntu? If the asnwer is "yes" Get Microsoft Windows Vista, Set up Pearental Control so they CANT go on Digg, and then bask in the fact that you have Aero and Linux doesnt and dont let mention linux's lack of ACPI!
*You need a 8800GTX for this to work (they don't work very well in linux)* -
