ads?
anyways, dugg.. - wbagdon, on 10/12/2007, -40/+128make sure you disable it for sites you support, otherwise they don't get paid
- daborg, on 10/12/2007, -12/+74"make sure you disable it for sites you support, otherwise they don't get paid"
Actually, it's WORSE for a site if you load ads and don't click on them. They get paid based on the ratio of clicks to showed ads. So if you load lots of ads without ever clicking on them, you're screwing up the ad revenue of a site. So if you never EVER click on ads you will help a site by using adblock. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+65i actually asked the digg support team whether they get paid for blocked ads or not. they said that they don't even know for sure, and not to worry about it.
so, whatever. - curtis3389, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39I thought those whitespace blocks were web 2.0!
- pixogen, on 10/12/2007, -11/+44I had to disable adblock plus to digg your comment...go figure :)
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Don't worry about it. Kevin isn't going to starve anytime soon.
- kiapolo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32did the same....never seen a ad on Digg.com...
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Use Adblock ... I didn't even notice
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32I wouldn't disable this stuff... But I have to.
Honestly. I'm on a really, really old computer. and the flash ads freeze me up. Real damned bad. I'm talking about freezing for a good 10-20 seconds.
I can't stand that. Sorry, digg! - Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25"I thought those whitespace blocks were web 2.0!"
That's just future-proofing. "This space reserved for Web 2.1." - synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21from the "where is that damn audio coming from?" dept.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Explains the empty white blocks at the top of my screen :)
- nipuL, on 10/12/2007, -20/+36But if you don't click on the ads it's like your stealing the internet!!!
- firefox15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16According to the recent survey, over 80% of diggers use Firefox. You would think that most of these users also have adblock installed. It's a wonder Kevin makes any money off ads at all.
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18He obviously uses Adblock.
- digitaloxygen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I noticed it too. But hey, they have to make money somehow right?
Adblock and adblock plus are great Firefox extentions. Highly recommended.
http://adblockplus.org/en/installation - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8There's also the Flashblock extension to use (which you can use in conjunction with Adblock). It blocks Flash animations from automatically playing, replacing the animation with a start button instead.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yuck. I hate these gaudy ads. I've always assumed Digg would always look like its running text ads and be all information driven, with few graphics. Guess I was wrong.
- stefang7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7With Adblock you can also block divs, so that way even the white space
left from the blocked add at the top of the digg homepage will be removed.
Stylish will do a similar job (including changing the location of the topics on the right hand side),
but stylish is more useful for complete clean-up of yahoo and live mail. - w8less, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The Internet’s Biggest Google Whores

2: Kevin Rose: Digg.com - $250,000 per month...According to this article from Business week, Digg will make $3 million this year from a combination of Google AdSense and Federated Media ads.
why would ads shock anyone? why are we even discussing this... bah! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hey, I'm using IE7 but I dont get any ads. Being a part of the minority, I wonder who still gets all these ads?
(side note: a story about digg... and on the front page?! say it aint so!) - postaldave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9get linux.
these flash ads don't show up for me because my flash plugin is OLD.
thanks adobe. - VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I only block ads from sites I want to support once they start using Flash.
- TPrime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why should you be sujected to them? Do you pay to use the site? Explain to me how else the site is going to make money.
- firefox15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's just not true. While I am annoyed by all the billboard ads, what I'm I going to do about it? Buy some device that blocks billboards? Oh wait -- they don't make any such thing. Ads in magazines? Same thing.
The ads on TV and are ads on digg are running on the same line of thought. Before TiVo you just dealt with commercials, but now that I have one I could never imagine myself watching commercials again. Same concept with ads online. You don't realize how annoying they are until you have the power to block them. - sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you knew how to use AdBlock properly, you wouldn't even see all that blank white space. Look up "div blocking"
- Rotkiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5well i can't always be on my home computer to look at digg so i can't always block ads.
I totally agree that these should not be on digg. why? i wouldn't mind flash ads as long as they don't make sounds (which one does do, the shark one comes to mind), aren't games, and don't pop into my view while i'm trying to read. - WestDC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The real question is: Why are you using new windows instead of tabs?
- zenloich, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I seriously don't understand what people have against ads on websites. How do you think these people make money? Ads are a part of our life. Billboards, magazine ads, TV commercials, I don't see people raising hell because of these things.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I use a combination of adblock+filterset as well as Flashblock, because there are a lot of flash based ads that adblock won't kill for me. Flashblock is also great for killing those annoying flash menus that many sites have.
- joshduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@DarkJC: Publishers don't get penalized for any kind of click-to-view ratio. Check your facts before criticizing others.
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4anything animated annoys me. I dont feel bad for blocking them, I view it as a solution.
- crex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I tried Firefox and Avant Browser and didn't find the tabs to be that useful. I get happy little tabs in that bar right next to the Start Menu. I can switch between my tabs via Alt+Tab abd life is good.
- Culat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, the shark one is the only one that bothers me.
- EbenieRosa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it always look like that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you mean digg has to start making money, and they found a way to do it without charging the users? omgwtf?
- firefox15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's because 10 people before him already said it.
- SirGrant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Adblock + hosts file = never see ads.
- iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Knew this already Who cares if it is flash ads!
- RatTrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thos adds have been there for like ever and some one notices now...
- lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Hosts file method works for all browsers/apps on the machine, not just FF.
http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html - tehJR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Camino collapses the white space nicely.
- bflfab, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I've whitelisted digg, the ads here typically don't bother me and sometimes I even click them just for the revenue.
- secretivecoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digg users remember less than a goldfish...you'd have to be stupid to advertise on digg anyway
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Symantec ad is not flash. I don't understand what the big deal is, as long as they're quite you can ignore them. I do enjoy Google text ads though.
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3BLocking ads is good for everyone.
1. You block ads if you are the kind of person that hates ads and seeing them makes you hate the product / become aggrivated. You will never, ever click on any ads.
2. Since you've blocked the ad, its never downloaded from the ad server. It therefore doesnt cost them bandwidth that would have otherwie been wasted
3. In addition, the site paying for the ad to be shown isn't charged for showing it, since it was never shown. Its 'saved' for when people actually see it.
4. Since you never see the ads that would normally agrivate you and turn you off to the product, you are not turned away from the products being sold. One day you might see them and buy them (through other means, perhaps youre searching for such a thing), at least there's still a chance.
everyones a winner. - djtyrant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dunno, I'm used to webads now :/, guess I just take it as a fact of life.
- slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Explains the empty white blocks at the top of my screen :)"
I don't have an ad on the top of my screen, nor an empty white block. What are you talking about?
;) I love Stylish for Firefox. Professionally block ads. - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How can you people still look at the internet with ads? That's got to be so annoying. I haven't seen an ad on a website for God knows how long. Beat the system, install Adblock.
