- mrfunkeye, on 10/11/2007, -6/+44File a bugreport about this new system like I did. If all users do, they'll have to listen!
http://digg.com/bugreport - norbiu, on 10/11/2007, -12/+40No *****!
- heinousjay, on 10/11/2007, -12/+38Wow, I feel stupider for having read that rant, in spite of the fact that I am a HUGE fan of people who criticize software without having any idea how to make it work.
- sewalsh, on 10/11/2007, -12/+32this new comment system can get *****. please roll back!
- DrDigg, on 10/11/2007, -8/+25Why such the hostility. That is fine if you don't like it, but this mob mentality is out of control.
- tdwester, on 10/11/2007, -10/+26I smell another revolt.
- inspecality, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18"I know 12 year olds that could develop a comment system on par with the comment system over at reddit."
Why does the author know a bunch of 12 year olds? - petoria, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1320 Thousand Chinese Testers would be a cool band name
- stonewaljacksn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13why was there even a need to change the system...it was fine.
- wattznext, on 10/11/2007, -14/+24new comment system = crap 9sorry i dont have anythig more intelligent to say)
- Daedalus81, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14K.I.S.S.
Keep it simple, stupid! - flamingmb, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13The new comment system isnt the best, but at least its better than blog spam..........
- stonewaljacksn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12i can has cheezburger?
- bigrat2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Everyone's a genius here at digg.
- JohnM5, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Ha, no I didn't! I have it auto expand :)
- br0ken1128, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8They got smug when their revolvt with the decryption code worked.. now they'll revolt anything like a band of whining infants.
- stauken, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I'm going to go ahead and point out that this guy is just a blog spammer who can't even form a reasonable sentence. "As a result...... as a result." Come on. I agree the new comment system sucks but do better than this when trying to tackle the problem. However; viva le revolt!
- michaelbolton, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8What next - a Digg Book? Learn from the mistakes Drew Curtis made at fark.com - if it aint broke, don't fix it. Your dedicated userbase will revolt, turn on you, and leave. Remember... "you'll get over it".
- merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12"My criticism is less valid just because I can't rebuild my own transmission"
Yes, actually. While end user criticism is definitely vary important, the criticism of a professional that understands the field and the engineering involved is far more valuable. All you can say is "These break a lot, and they suck". A qualified professional, on the other hand, could say "Chrysler transmissions fail 20% faster than the industry average, due to a gasket made from inferior materials. However, as long as you have a competent mechanic inspect this gasket every 20,000 miles, you can avoid this problem entirely".
See how that works?
BTW, what kind of PC was the submitter on when he got that Firefox error? I have some experience with it. You're a lot more likely to see it if you're on an ancient, underpowered PC -- it pops up by default after a certain number of seconds of script execution, so the faster your PC can execute a script, the less likely you are to see it. Long story short, if that error is only popping up on old P2 Celerons, then that's not really digg's fault.
See how that works? - hrhs556x, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13you just clicked 3 times just to see this lame comment.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11I detest this new system. Great idea, terrible execution. Burying every comment in a thread is a bad idea. Not having the option to set to expand all trees is a bad idea. Fix these problems and it may get a little better.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11it looks like ***** from a design standpoint, for sure.
- technique, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Best way to get them to fix the comment system: stop commenting altogether. Surf somewhere else.
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6completely agree.atleast the last time it had some kind of point.this is just dumb now.
- a3r0, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Too bad you can't auto-auto expand
- Hungryhaney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I like the new design. It needs some tweaks, sure, but saying Digg.com "lied" to its users isn't just far fetched, it's outright false. And claiming that 10 or 12 year olds could write this or a better commenting system, well, show me the proof (and send it to Digg.com's Dev team, I am sure they are open to improvements).
- qmeister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4No, it doesn't take a developer to criticize this comment system. Anyone can see that this is terrible. I'm a developer and know that if I put out this kind of buggy system which actually required users to click more than the previous system and utilized technology that isn't necessary I would either lose my job or have to spend countless hours redoing it. BUT, none of that would be known to the public because I wouldn't put out a system like this without some high degree of testing. Digg development should know that anything they put out is going to be scrutinized more than just about any other site....How about gathering a beta group together?? That wouldn't be too hard on this site.
I see this as a major failure on Digg's part...it's time for them to rethink their practices.
AND - the whole "Session expired" thing is really ***** pissing me off...after typing all that, I had to copy it out, login and come back.
C'mon DIGG....you can do better than this. - halik, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Whoever came up with this needs to take some classes on ui design. This is as dumb as MS Office 2000 hiding 'unused' menu items. Don't hide information that the users want to see the most; it's almost common sense.
- wicketr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5NO, obviously some people feel that it's all a conspiracy. Digg developers are stupid or they are trying to cull some of their users.
Seriously, why make a blog post about it? Just submit a bug report and have them look at it. Digg developers aren't going to go from blog to blog to find these reported bugs. Get over yourself. - jdibiase, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3A sure sign of the immaturity of those being so hostile.
- kweee, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6If the person who designed this comment system worked at any other company, he or she would be fired for producing such crappy work. Perhaps Digg ought to do the same.
- stealthboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It's not the bugs that are annoying (they can be worked out). It's the fundamental flaws in the design and concept.
- Pile, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Dude, if you don't like this ask for your money back.
- RoroCo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8I am digging all negative articles based on new commenting system. If 5 out of 10 of the top 10 stories are all asking for change, than maybe something will change - or unchange.
- atlacatl, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I'm almost certain the designers of this new comment system are not the same guys/gals who developed he original digg interface. This new implementation seems amateurish and someone went too crazy with coloured frames and AJAX.
Remember, just because you can use every AJAX trick in the hat, doesn't mean you guys should. And what about white space to separate comments? - jwolcott, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I just found me Lucky Charms!
- fani, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Digg new commenting layout sucks.
With this layout, there's no impetus to even expand and click on the replies ( and wait a few secs while it loads ).
What this leads to is - people will soon realize its pointless to reply to comments. They'll just start new comments, else its buried in that click-to-get it zone. Which means bye-bye nested comments.
Digg should learn from Reddit's commenting style. That is elegant, and just works.
Digg is like Windows while Reddit is like Apple. - se7en11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Until someone diggs him up...
- jferraro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I also like the new system. I prevents someone from posting first and then a bunch of other ***** replying to the first post with unrelated comments just to get their thoughts at the top.
- niqhil, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6A site that fails to listen to it's users will end up losing its "losers"
. .WTF !! - evil-doer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2sure, bury the truth. i even softened it down for you guys. their chat system is MUCH better. like theres no delay when you open a thread, and theres a preview of the text. oh well, be blissfully ignorant and bury me again.
- SniperX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2FUD alert. Everything is working fine for me. I'd imagine the kid was rapidly clicking around to confuse FIREFOX's javascript engine.
When a story starts out stating that the author has had comments deleted on a site that only removes the very worst of comments, you know to take what the author says with a grain of salt. - Pssdoff, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Where is the My #1 option? Did it go away?
Why are the thumbs up/down icons 12 pixels by 12 pixels?
WHY DOESN'T IT SAVE THE OPTION TO EXPAND FULL TREE??? - paulmike3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Except you still have to expand to see all the comments. Go to the bottom of this page, and you'll see something like "Show 51 - 70 of 200 discussions". If there's 200 replies, you'll have to click like 20 times to get them all on one page to CTRL-F.
- BoomWav, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's not the programmer's fault.. he just does what he's ask to do.. trust me..
- Dracker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I tried to edit my above comment, but I got "Your session expired" "Comment does not exist" when using the counting down edit bar. The new system can work, but it needs all the BUGS fixed and many of the MECHANICS changed. This wouldn't be 2 comments in a row from me if I could edit my other comment, a feature I've come to expect to work properly
- Dracker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4The biggest flaw in my opinion is the fact that if you bury a comment, it hides the replies.
I read a comment. I think "WTF is this guy thinking?" and want to look at the replies and see if there's something to digg. At the same time I want to bury the comment. If I bury the comment, I have to unhide it, then show replies. If I show replies, I'd have to scroll back up to it to bury it, and revisit a comment I already read and didn't like. - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3you can expand full tree its under "comment display options" at top of page
- merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Not sure where my line terminators went. I'd laugh really hard if the new comment system doesn't work right with mac line terminators.
I hit return twice before typing this sentence. - interiot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Slashdot managed to do it somehow. http://slashdot.org/faq/com-mod.shtml#cm120:
"Q: What is Discussion2? A: Currently a small population of Slashdot readers are being asked to test a revised discussion/comment system. The initial testing group will consist of our subscribed users, and will eventually expand to more users as we become comfortable with scalability, performance, and usability issues."
Digg doesn't need 20k Chinese testers, they have hundreds of thousands of U.S. and Europeans, they just need to roll it out more slowly. -
