- dweeb79, on 10/10/2007, -3/+187Good now fix the GOD DAMN Search.
Using Diggs search is like searching for a needle in a hay stack. - facelogic, on 10/10/2007, -8/+121All because of 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0
- rationalist, on 10/10/2007, -8/+105Actually, at best that chart shows Digg leveling off, having passed its period of greatest growth. And, in fact, it shows a decline in the last two months graphed.
It doesn't really disagree with the Alexa stats at all - on the contrary, it reinforces the notion that Digg has plateaued. The business question now is, what caused the leveling off? If the folks at Digg can be brutally, unemotionally analytical about it, they may be able to find the reason and make adjustments that can lead to another period of sustained growth.
Given the huge churn in users on sites that do a poor job of fostering community (like this one), it isn't enough to sustain levels - either one has to continue to feed the growth engine, or one needs to find a way to become stickier.
The frustrations with using this site - first and foremost the "new" comment system, which is about as successful as the "New Coke" was - weigh heavily against its benefits. They drive more people (those who don't just give up on the site) to the RSS feeds, which creates a positive feedback loop that will further drain the vestiges of community participation.
Fixing the comments so they serve the user and foster constructive community will go a long way toward making the site stickier.
Another big addition would be the ability to monitor one's own comments - integrated *within* the Digg interface, rather than having to go to 3rd party sites, which don't provide the same features or performance. - Lylepalooza, on 10/10/2007, -5/+95I would really like for the Digg blog to come out with some statistics for the site. They don't need to, but I think it would be an interesting read. Everyone loves statistics. Let's see some for a site we are actually interested in!
- masgrada, on 10/10/2007, -4/+67I think digg is losing it's edge as a news aggregator. We need a "Bury It" for "not news" to get rid of this college humor type crap.
- kevinrose, on 10/16/2007, -4/+52Well, from the source, I can tell you our largest traffic month ever was July 07'
- euunog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+37Search Analytics: Top Keywords
1. digg
2. britney spears crotch shot
3. watch for free firefly online
4. u tube
5. paris hilton nude - h4mx0r, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34There are only so many nerds and geeks in the world...
- cmgarcia, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32I'm very surprised this comment hasn't had more diggs; I definitely agree that we should be able to bury things for not being news. Did anyone see yesterday how a bunch of blowhards dugg up all those girls farting things? I mean, *****.
- Cerpin_Taxt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25I weep for humanity.
- xtmno3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Society is a failed experiment, people ruin everything.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23I don't think we need to bury such things, I just think we need more categories than "News", "Videos", and "Podcasts" on this site for the type of content it manages. It would also be cool if digg could fix thinks like the dup problem or the blogspam problem by letting users filter what makes it to their front page. Like, don't post URLs I've visited before to my FP, or don't post stories from news blogs, etc. I also think it would be good to digg something for a reason just like you can bury it for a reason. Like, digg it for being funny, or digg it for being interesting. A count could make up for this, so I could filter "funny" things from my FP.
- miyamotofreak, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19make a digg.com/all
and make it the homepage
the videos will drive new users. Right now it's an afterthought - postalblowfish7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17you're right. i was never a digg user until i saw a youtube video that chronicled the 09-F9... fiasco. that same day i made my profile and started digging.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20In other news, productivity is said to be going down.
- humperdeath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14I've enjoyed Digg for at least a year now, but the last month or so, since they changed the format, its much too slow to load all the comments. I liked it the 'old way' much better. Please, DIGG, youve got to fix this!
- mhockey14221, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Time to start making some babies
- InvisibleKid, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I think the decline has something to do with the new comment system... they should fix it too
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yeah I don't understand why they haven't made it easier to track previous comments that were made. That's one of the most highly requested features from commenters.. shouldn't be too difficult.
- tfinniga, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Alexa's stats are based on how many people voluntarily have their toolbar installed. As such, they're in no way statistically significant.
http://tinyurl.com/ypklfk
For example, lets compare digg, slashdot, and cnn.com over the last 6 months. It looks like all three are down - but just as likely, fewer people are installing the alexa toolbar. Or at least fewer people who visit those sites. - usherzx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8the "not news" bury tag you are looking for is called "OK, This is Lame"
- Darmichar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8http://garycarstensen.googlepages.com/comments7.html
That's just one example of someone using Digg's own API to track comments.
Is there some reason Digg can't do that too? - Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Trust the computer. The computer is your friend.
The Computer wants you to be happy. If you are not happy, you may be used for reactor shielding. - UNL1M1T3D, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Good job proving your point.
- Sandurz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It only works if I remember the exact name of a story submitted
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6How about the ability to add URLs to stories, and vote on the most popular URL (and description) for a story? Then, you can mark something as a dupe with a link to the original. If enough people do this, the dupe gets removed and added as an additional URL for the original.
- Theipolicy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8For sites that make a user install a toolbar or hit an extra button, the results are misleading. There are tons of people who don't use those things, yet visit the site.
It doesn't matter anyway, as long as there are people who will submit quality news, people will still come back. - Bamborzled, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Come on. You know it's happening. It happened with the Destructoid stories and you know others are gaming the algorithm as well.
- Bamborzled, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You'd need to meet women first, though. A pity.
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Rather than bury, filter.
It would be much better if it were easier to turn off more of the sub categories so I didn't pick up the silly stories. Maybe a word filter so anything with PIC, BREAKING etc. wouldn't show. It would make all the Ron paul Haters happy as they would never see another RP story. - dudefather, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5email attachments and funny pictures (with 'priceless' jokes) from 1999 are the wave of the future for digg
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I always forget about the video section, probably will with the apparent new photo section too. So, I agree, the main page should have all links.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5dude, the top of that chart is the top ranking site, obviously the curve will plateau once digg reaches is max audience.... there are only so many people on the internet...
- pasher1221, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Just use Google by adding the word Digg to your search. It works perfect.
- joltjake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Who gives a ***** if it is gaining or losing popularity? Whoever reads the story is going to be using digg anyways, so it doesn't even matter.
- krakhed, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9I'd say that number made me lose a whole lot of respect for digg users as a whole. Its been going downhill since that lovely day on digg.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Most sites don't cheat to amass pageviews though. When you embed the 'digg this' chicklet on an article or whatever, anyone who views that article is also a visitor + pageview on digg.
- donolsen1155, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I personally have lost interest due to the lack of real content, dupes, and Digg gaming.
I'm not getting anything from Digg anymore that I haven't already read here , or on another blog earlier in the day. The decline could be attributed to users getting pointed to all the popular content providers, if they didn't know about them. Once your reading them directly, you don't find much new on Digg. - HigherLogic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Oh yeah, watch how low you get buried.
- victorycig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Intelligent, concise argument. From the link, the fact that cnn's traffic has dropped along with digg and slashdot is compelling evidence that Alexa's lower ratings for digg reflect a reduction in their users, not users of these websites.
- KJSatz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well considering it's ranking websites...number 30 overall is awesome, and you can't expect much better.
- WaterDragon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Oh Noooooo! We're already up to about 500 comments right after a story hits the front page.
Gone are the days when one can read more than one Digg story, plus comments, in a single night.
Maybe there should be some limits placed on Digg's growth, before it becomes entirely unmanageable.
More =/= better.
Digg is like single malt scotch.
A little, or even a whole bottle, on occasion, is good....but two bottles, and you may end up dead.
The planet is being choked by over-population, and now so is Digg! - 4DFX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I smell a troll...
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I agree. That is the problem with success isn't it.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3theres Digg Comment Stalker
see your comments.. Diggs (up and down)..no. replies
http://digg-whore.com/Default.aspx?user=epreisz - robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Nothing like a site which regularly contradicts itself within 24 hours.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3 It always tells me Digg is busy, try again later,so I try again later and Digg tells me it's busy....Etc.
- Bamborzled, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Digg isn't popular because of trolls.
- glmory, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Yeah, the lack of a decent way to look at my comments sent me to reddit as my main place to troll...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2no photos section, horrid comment system that lags/freezes firefox, and no way to track your own comments to see if you were dugg up or down. These things are lacking
