- DiggChainey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+40Got to mark as inaccurate.
The story was made up. Both VideoSift and Pligg agree
See http://digg.com/tech_news/TechCrunch_Caught_Fabricating_a_Story - dollars5, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Not just one story - TC has fabricated two stories - just today - read more at http://forums.pligg.com/pligg-news/8356-techcrunch-not-happy-pligg.html
Dag of Videosift has said they are forced to built their very own platform due to their internal requirement - but TC fabricated to create an "Anti-Pligg" stand - pls refer http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/08/22/largest-pligg-partner-defects-after-announced-sale/. And in other story when the Chief of WordPress and Automattic mentions nothing of Pligg - TC fabricated the story as "Pligg is one of the open source projects for profiteering from their WordPress code" - check http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/08/22/how-grey-is-your-valley-making-money-from-open-source/ - Matt feels very much offended by such fabrications.
Very bad blog ethics exhibited by TC :( - chubbybubba, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17spider pligg, spider pligg, does whatever a spider pligg does.
- jkizzle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4this story is made up, in case those of you digging and commenting DIDNT READ THE FIRST COMMENT...
- Hoxie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5plugg'd
- Yankidank, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4So having "igg" in a name makes you a criminal? Yeah, that makes sense.
- KevinCrose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Marked Inaccurate
"Videosift said they built their very own platform due to their internal requirement"
It had nothing to do with Pligg. - Yankidank, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Innacurate assumption.
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2VideoSift is talking about it too in http://www.videosift.com/talk/VideoSift-on-TechCrunch ...
- aydoubleyou, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Wtf that pisses me off TechCrunch. Im a daily reader, and now... Im not so sure if I want to continue returning to your site so much. Mashable has just been bumped up a spot in my list, you've been knocked down a spot. Play a fair game Arrington!
- Wang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Once upon a time, most sites only had a few members....it takes time for sites to grow, and it looks like the site only just opened up - who cares if they only have 3 votes (look at the junk on digg that gets hundreds of votes each day). Fact is - the articles are good and the music news is more comprehensive than digg + this site gives our free gift vouchers and music magazine subscriptions
- dltros, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2That's too bad for Pligg. I really like the script. Very easy to install.

http://jandyheatpumps.com/ - IbnDigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hold on a second. Arrington could be the biggest scumbag on earth for all I care, but to mark this as inaccurate or say that he is spinning things is a bit too far.
On the site he has posted an update with the email send from videosift. IF the email is valid, (and i doubt he would post a fabricated email), then the headline is totally true.
========
Update: After reaching out to us to write this story, the founder of VideoSift is now saying that we mischaracterized his position. Instead of trying to properly characterize his position, here’s his email to us. You decide if the story is inappropriate or not.
"Pligg is a good general CMS, but there were a few considerations for moving off:
We started VideoSift shortly after Pligg was ported from the Spanish language Digg clone Meneame.net written by a talented Spanish coder, Ricardo Galli. ( http://meneame.net/) Pligg has gone through a lot of revisions and changes since then - and we haven’t moved with them.
About 2 months ago, there was a serious security breach at VideoSift (and other Pligg based sites) that compromised part of our DB. The breach was based on a simple hack that would have been found by analyzing the Pligg source. Although the Pligg community was quick to respond and patch the problem- This pushed us farther down the road to closed source.
And lastly, although we were well on our way to writing our new software, we have some misgivings about the pending sale of Pligg. Pligg is licensed under the Aferro GPL which is pretty strict about the re-sell of code.
The new VideoSift has been rebuilt from the ground up to work well around video aggregation. Our community loves it, and we can’t wait to launch it this Friday.
Thanks and cheers,"

Sydney, Australia - davidlt, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2I just created a digg clone using the pligg vote software. It installs easily and has a lot of features. I guess there's nothing quite like digg but pligg (digg clone script) does a pretty good job of pulling it off imho. http://pliggvote.com
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Everything Arrington says is pure spin designed to get eyes on ads. I guess if you can't find any non-news to pretend-report on you have to make it up.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1marked as - someones already pointed this out
- anagoge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Iggy Pop, Miss Piggy and Tigger are ***** themselves.
- abhiroop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1HAve u heard of Booble? You've obviously never been to any legal proceedings. Just because people are getting sued left right and centre by the RIAA doesn't mean its always that easy to sue someone. In fact its rarely consumers that think "o hey let me sue them"!, usually a lawyer offers to take the case (heard of ambulance chasers?). Besides digg copied slashdot...and it goes on and on...
Incidentally I really liked the first post on VidSoft (or whatever it is): "Most AMAZING...." hmmm I suppose THAT is a blatant copy of digg users. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Yeah, right. Excuse me while I use Groogle.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Just Like iHome is a direct photocopy of the iPod
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1...uh huh.... so?
- abhiroop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1he works for them...
- logixtekz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1There are quite a few great sites out there using the pligg script eg; http://www.macintoshr.com
- meteors, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I found Pligg to be a buggy mess. Sorry, but it was just too complicated and convoluted to be useful for what most people want: a simple Digg clone.
-j - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Pligg sites dont get much traffic anyway, without people to submit stories for you it sux cuz you have to do all the work, and its a pain updating those templates for each new release, and there are lots of bugs. Pligg is only popular while Digg is "hot". Just like there are 1000 different kinds of CMSes, 400 forums, 200 blog web apps there will probably be more Digg apps in a few years. THe only reason people dont make their own open source is because its a good money maker for the time being.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1wow you tricked me there - its crap - most popular stories have only got 3 votes. wow.
- fezzen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Someone please tell me where TC asserted that VideoSift made this decision because of the sale.
They didn't.
So all of you marking this as inaccurate, are therefore mistaken. As far as I can see, they took text from an email from VideoSift almost verbatim to make this article. - tdous, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1point?
- duetobeen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0if videosift is so popular how come it has such few votes.
- ekravchenko, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Pligg is open source and free to download...
- GetShorty, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Their Wiki is full of spam. Pathetic.
Example: http://www.pligg.com/wiki/index.php?title=Features - Racerx52, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2But it is an obvious attempt to leech/steal from diggs popularity.
- Tboy1039, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3Are you serious? Pligg? Wow.
- Wang, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1I prefer oversome.com - it's like digg, but aimed specifically at music. Not that digg covers music news badly or anything, but oversome has more music-related features + they give people free itunes/amazon vouchers just for using the site :) win++
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -15/+4Pligg. LOL. Why hasnt Digg sued them yet? The obvious photocopy of the Digg system PLUS the igg ending of their name are surefire winners in court. Or maybe they are waiting to see if Pligg makes any money, and then BAMMMM lawsuit thanks for the cash you cheap knockoffs.

What is Digg?
