- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+102Not to nitpick, this is slightly on topic...but the thing about the podcasts becoming popular and then just sticking to the top bugs me. Yeah I get the fact that no one has time to listen to/watch a podcast every time a new one is submitted but can't there be a way so that the people with lesser know podcasts (like me) can get some coverage on websites? All you see is TWiT and Homestar and Ask a Ninja and that one Frank show but there aren't any "New" or "Just Released" podcast sections (on digg, iTunes or otherwise) and for no-names like me, it's next to impossible to get your name out there. IMHO it presents a serious problem when places like iTunes don't "cycle" podcasts off the front page. TWiT and ABC have been on the home page of iTunes for months. Why can't they be on for a week (like musical artists) and then be cycled off with new and different podcasts (like musical artists). I just know that there are good and innovative podcasts out there on the web that aren't made by the big 4 media companies, Rev3 and TWiT.tv that I want to listen to, but have no way of finding them, and until someone figure out a way (or simply implements a way) that we can see undiscovered podcasts, I guess my show is just going to be just as unpopular as ever.
Can Digg implement an algorithm that will take all user submitted feeds (say I submit my show feed one time), and then every time I add an episode it will enter a "New Episodes" section of Digg, (which would be like the "Upcoming Stories" of the front page), and then we can Digg those episodes up to the front page or they can fade away from that list after 24 hours. That way TWiT would be on the front page only the day a new episode is released and my show would follow the same rules, but would at least would have a chance to move past page 4.
Hope that made sense... - northerncomfort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Agreed entirely. Digg is an opportunity for lesser-known podcasts to have the opportunity for equal recognition. Making it just a place for the Top 10 Podcasts to get all the fun is boring, redundant, and ultimately bad for podcasting.
- lordmetroid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I see a big problem with the cumulative digging of podcast that there will never be anyone but the one on top staying in top. There will be no incentive to digg new podcasts. Even now when it just started I feel that way!
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it does seem to be a "rich get richer" kind of situation.. perhaps they should only count the diggs in the last 30 days? so it's like the hottest podcast that month.. and each month, the top would be fair game for everyone
- MrLobster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well it is a brand new feature advertised as beta. I'm sure they will tweak things. Personally I'm loving the new feature, I've discovered a lot of new podcasts the past couple of days. It sure beats searching google for podcasts.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4could'nt new podcast(er)s plug the Digg podcast section in their shows - and satisfied listeners would then know to Digg them
- marshallk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This seems like a good compromise to me. An issue of fundamental importance and not just for digg but for increasingly ubiquitous media aggregators everywhere.
- aynrand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good idea, it's probably beeing implemented somehow.
But in the meantime you can also check you're friends diggs to find new podcasts you may be interested in:
http://digg.com/users/Wogna/friends/podcasts/dugg
That's what I like about the friends feature in general: once you found a couple of people with similar interests, it's a great tool for personalized news. - buckykatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not an expert but I'd suspect the RSS feed isn't quite right. Not sure what's up with the description, but for the dates, if you include a Pubdate for each file like this:(replace ( ) with < >)
(pubDate)Wed, 15 Jun 2005 19:00:00 GMT(/pubDate)
it should give it the right date.
The examples on these links might help:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html - hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2therd obvious need to be time limit same as for news stories
listning to old editions of twit off the hook etc on cni radio leo occasionally bemoaned the fact that twit wasnt no.1 in the apple/itunes chart after awhile becausethey only use new listeners to rank them but then wogna (top) says he is there (i dont use itunes) so i was wrong assuming charts were current
i spose an all time top ten AND a current chart are needed so Diggers could learn about established favourites
AND new (possibly really good) stuff
id check out a current top5er,if it looked interestin - kwoktalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even though the "cumulative digg-ing" has its flaws (as others rightfully noted earlier), I found the resetting of votes (ex: Podcast Alley) to be a huge barrier since I have a really small audience for my podcast. I would assume that there are a lot of other podcasters out there whose audience is like mine, not tech savvy at all and hard enough to get them to vote/digg on a website just once, let alone on a repeating basis monthly. Hopefully they'll find a new way to get the best of both worlds. Regardless, I'm just super excited that Digg is getting into podcasts and hopefully some of us smaller podcasters can benefit from the digg effect.
- RockMyMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a total noob at podcasting so I don't know if this is a Digg bug or something I need to fix, but there are two things I notice on my Podcast page on Digg though. The description on my Digg page and the description on my XML page are not even close. Second, why is the date on all my podcasts the same? Every one of the audio files were created years after the date currently listed on all of them. I will give my heavily filtered email address for anyone with an answer. Just put he word spam in front of my user name and add a dot com and it will get to me. Thanks.
I can't afford to pay anyone for the answer that leads to me fixing this, but I can give free advertising or something as my way of saying thanks. - bdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. Just because a story has 8000000 diggs won't mean it stays on the homepage of the news section. The point of digg is to find fresh content, so please do something. Please.
- conedude13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There needs to be more catagories for the podcasts ( i dont think ctrl alt chicken is a technology podcast) and there needs to be a small bit of text on the main page to let the digger know if the podcast is audio based and/or video based. I prefer video podcasts and don't feel like going through 2-3 links to find out that the podcast that sounds interesting only has an audio based version.
- hiscity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed, the solution is obvious. Time phasing as with News. Top in 1 day, 1 week, ongoing.
That said, how about aggregating user assigned tags, and having a tag view?
Optionally, the top bars could have 3rd (and 4th) subcategories as needed.
Right now, it's like all the podcasts are in one big sack. - tostinni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great feature, what about a general/category RSS feed ?
It may be overwhelming (due to the number of new podcast), but I'd like to see new entries as I subscribed to digg technology feed.
Thanks a lot for the works you've done. - VBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I totally agree also. The few that have gotten in already are going to maintain a top status. I like the idea of taking only the current months Diggs and using that to rank for the month. Sure they could still show the all time total, but if make a monthly total and allow it to reset at the beginning of each month then that gives others potential to be seen on the front page. Hope the Digg staff checks out this option.
- d722002, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Your comment was dugg up by Kevin...
- Voxx418, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe we could take the time to check out each other's podcasts, and depending on if we truly like what we hear, we could digg each other's sites. That might help.
- geeknews, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Thats why when we launched Blubrry.com podcasts that are on that site all get equal opportunity on the front page no single show will ever dominate. Along with all the social stuff that we built into the site.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Have the Digg guys stated how this goes along with Kevin's mention of Digg not hosting content, but rather linking to it? Does this fit into that idea or are they just taking a different route?
- benjihad, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1the reason that iTunes doesn't rotate podcasts into their front page is because they can't guarantee the content of the podcast. you could have a really cool hip podcast for a few episodes and apple would move it to their front page and then you could release an episode dedicated to hardcore anal sex.
they would rather stick with Disney (ABC). - MrLobster, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2[delete]
- Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Unfortunately not - Microsoft owns the patent to display random anything on the web now.

Sickening ain't it?

What is Digg?
