- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47Proves you aren't human.
- Cloned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44Good since half the time I can't make out what the letters are.
- hayesy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Kind of like braille on drive-up atms, right?
- swaggadocio, on 08/20/2008, -0/+20Any CAPTCHA scheme or other reverse Turing test should be made accessible as possible. This is a good move IMO.
- animalmuther76, on 07/30/2008, -1/+20Next job, testing your not an idiot/troll
- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17This feature is present on many other sites also. Glad that Digg has it now too :)
- joestump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16We pushed this last week (tip o' the hat to Kurt).
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Cylon ?
- bewareofcabbage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I believe the poor quality and distortion is intentional to stop the captcha from being bypassed by automated systems i.e. speech recognition. Google's Blogger employs a similar method for blog comments - there, a woman recites the captcha code twice, with a soundtrack in the background of garbled noise/backwards speak.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12replicant.
- BritishGolgo13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Does the backward speak convey satanic messages?
- fibonacci1123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Try to submit a story and you will see the captcha.
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My seeing eye has trouble differentiating from O and Q. He'll be happy with this.
- jull1234, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm curious, how does the rest of digg.com stack up as far as accessibility for the blind goes?
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That, and now they actually comply with the american dissabilitis act.
- chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5In other digg suck up news. The little 10x10 widget was moved 4 pixels to the left....
Is this really news? - DirtySnachez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why the ***** would you comment ?
- MrPresident13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This isn't new on Digg, although useful. Just not new.
- Blade0rz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Ok, but honestly, how does this make the front page?"

How dare people need accessibility options?! What's the world coming to eh... - jkramlich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For those interested in Captcha for the disabled, my friend and I created an open source system called HumanAuth. It asks the visitor to select pictures based on a certain theme. Alt tags and text descriptions that are read through screen readers allows people with visual impairments to use the system.
http://www.gigoit.org/humanauth/ - lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought this was a bladerunner thing, instead is just an audio captcha. Err, welcome to 2005.
- ornellasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is awesome, I can't remember how digg's previous system was, but sometimes with my color blindness I have zero possibility of making out the characters.
- estacado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Come on. It's not like this is a breakthrough in captcha technology. It's been around for a long time. Why is this front paged? You guys should really take a good look at yourselves. I bet if Digg was a human being, you people would pay to watch it take a *****.
- ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember not too long ago, many ATM's had braille but no audio output. Drive up or not, a blind person wouldn't be able to see the screen to complete the transaction. My guess is that the same keypads are used on all machines.
- Wooism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow.. hard hitting new there...
- keiths, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You should be able to eventually prove you're not a bot (by how many stories get promoted) and not have to enter the CAPTCHA. It's really annoying
- xVebx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is cool.
- selphishnerd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Ok, but honestly, how does this make the front page? Are people that excited about this?
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a lot of static in the sound files, by design I think to help circumvent just that possibility.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Next job, testing your not an idiot/troll"
Well, most CAPTCHAs require you to spell correctly so I guess you fail. You obviously are a bot. ;-) - instabil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's up with their avatars? Hepatitis?
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good. As long as the image turns up and the sound does too (I've seen both fail before) I'm happy.
- Nato592, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Didn't work on Mac for me, did it work for anyone else?
- aura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Because anything that gets changed on the digg blog gets onto the front page.
Digg needs a "Digg" section for this kinda thing. - psilentp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where can I try this out?
- rubah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think digg's captcha is usually a lot more readable than most, slashdot comes to mind.
I hate captchas :( I'll probably fail the one I'm about to type.
[edit-- I guess not] - smithpg1002, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's Digg news right along side of "Holy crap! Someone installed Linux on a toaster! This is the most amazing thing since they installed it on a watch!"
I don't hate Linux at all, but there are some seriously stupid stuff that make it to the front page. - DivisibleByZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's some distortion in there, but to me it doesn't seem like enough to deter a well-tooled speech recognition algorithm. I've never gotten into the guts of how that stuff works, but I've seen some impressive ones.
Also, it seems like the letters are read by the same Text to Speech algorithm. This creates a problem wherein each letter is going to sound exactly the same every time it's read. Makes it a little easier when you know precisely what you're looking for. - dreamywallflwr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1thats what i said
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haven't they had that option for quite a while, or am I just crazy?
/On a side note, when do they stop making you enter the captcha to post comments? Got a new account because my old one had my real name for the username, which I decided was a bad idea. I remember on that one I eventually stopped having to enter the captcha, but I don't know how long it was. I've been on this one for about a month. - kadallas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Really a help for people with poor eye sight!!!
- FartyMcPooPants, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Pod Person
- s6t9eve, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Erm, why did this reach the front page? Who gives a *****< its hardly news and raelly doesnt affet any of us.
- Blade0rz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2"Erm, why did this reach the front page?"
http://digg.com/about
"Who gives a *****"
People who can't read the ***** skewed letters
"its hardly news"
news /nuz, nyuz/
–noun (usually used with a singular verb)
1. a report of a recent event; intelligence; >information - Eraser85, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Hmm maybe you should put a soundtrack in background.. It's just my opinion though...
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Hmmm, I wonder if you could just turn on voice recognition in vista instead of having to type the stupid thing.
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Dude thats on purpose so bad guys can figure this out by automation.
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Kevin should post like an Article asking about ideas from everyone on things that need to be improved or could be done.
I have an idea and it is that we need something or somewhere where mirrors can be updated or something...... the Digg Effect has been taking its toll lately... - franksands, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2where can I test this captcha? When I comment, it does not appear
- deluxndotcom, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2How in the world did this story make it to the front page?
