- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40The title was supposed to be "Digg NOT being purchased *by* News Corp... damn typos!
- digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16"So, at this time Digg is NOT being purchased by News Corp."
Why doesn't the author bother to substantiate this? I mean, seriously, how does he know?! He infers based on usage rates and site visits etc, but that's only building a case for whether Digg's worth $150M or not.
Maybe I'm missing something... but I can't see how he came to the conclusion that News Corp is, in fact, NOT buying Digg. - kidhero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16You people are retarded. Digg is worth no more than what Yahoo paid for delicious or flickr. This website is worthless to a media/content company much like how Youtube would be a worthless buy for a TV company.
1. Digg has legitimacy because of its neutrality. If it gets bought out whoever has it will use it to push/promote whatever other products they have. Ie. Fox bought Myspace to push all the OC tv show. But hey, do you really want to see TOP DIGGS - BRAND NEW TV SHOW TONIGHT! every other day?
2. Digg makes no money and has little chance to make money. Even Myspace has trouble making money because no one clicks on those stupid ads. So if it's not used as a revenue generating business what else is it good for? Technology? Hundreds of Digg clone sites exist already and I just counted TEN, not one two or three, but TEN different bookmarking service on someone's spam blog. Reddit, Yahoo MyWeb, MSN Live bookmarks, etc. etc.
Most diggs are getting lamer. Everyone is gaming the system, stealing content from other sources, putting into a blogspot and throwing adsense on there for a brief moment of popularity. A decent into complete craptitude of content provision. - Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15thank god.
i hope digg never sells out, but if they do, News corp would have to be the worst of them all. - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12http://www.duggmirror.com
Put the http:// in next time. - JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I love stories like this. They give me a good clue of what parent companies not to invest in in the near future. How would a company that would buy Digg make $150m back over, say, 10 years? $15m a year in banner ads?
$15m per year worth of subscriptions from people who are out doing the legwork finding stories? I don't think so.
Have people forgotten 5 years ago already? Is there something I'm missing here? - mrgoat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11This is toss.
Alexa is *****. It only measures people that have installed the gaybar. How many self respecting techies do you know would install it?
I can think of none.
So this whole piece is pointless.
You have been rumbled, mate. Now please move along. - bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6How the Simpsons would sell digg:
Homer: We'll fake it, and sell it to the Fox network.
Bart: [chuckles] They'll buy anything.
Homer: Now, son, they do a lot of quality programming, too. - vvvv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What, now the attention spans of millions of semiliterate, intellectual-property-pirating Nintendo fanboys aren't worth a measly $150,000,000? Uh-oh... I think Web 2.0 bubble's about to burst.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Neither are worth that much. No site that relies EXCLUSIVELY on ads for revnue is worth that much. Anyone who thinks otehrwise was apparently in a coma 6 years ago.
And back in 2000, things weren't evn as bad as they could be today. Because now, with ad blockers becoming more and more well known, the chances of the internet ad revenue bubble bursting again just get greater and greater.
Any owner of a web site that has nothing but ads to make money that is offered enough money to live comfortably for their rest of their lives that DOESN'T jump at the offer is a fool. Even if Digg was worth $150 million today (which it isn't), there is always the chance that three months from now it will be worth $5 million. And a month after that $500,000. - chiptinder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'd have to disagree.
Digg has built itself a meaningful name. People use it as their secondary, and at times, their primary news source. Sure, it's focused towards a specific group, but that group is growing by the day, and shows no signs of stopping. I wouldn't price it quite at youtube's level, but if digg were to go big in version four, i would estimate (i being a complete ignoramus when it comes to finances) 500 million.
People are really starting to "get" the idea of user generated content. (If you need any more of a sign, look at youtube) Digg is just one extension of that idea. There are many more to come.
Personally, I see a big "re"surgence of "retro" more "stylized" iptv "networks", Rev3 just being the beginning. my my, kevin and alex, what an exciting world you've found yourselves in. :)
Hope you're ready!
*sits down the vodka*I'm ready!!*falls* - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When compared to the only "big" Internet sales, MySpace and Youtube, Digg IS flat
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?compare_sites=myspace.com+youtube.com&range=6m&size=medium&y=r&url=digg.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Slashdot might be worth $150m, but not digg... not with these stories, comments, and links to god awful blogs.
- Action123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i dont see a big reason to be happy about.
what if Newscorp agreed to the amount specified by Digg?
The reason to be sad is that the Digg guys have actually contemplated on selling off to someone like Newscorp. Its a sad fact. - dustko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would be ironic because digg represents the much touted "democratic user-generated content" whereas News Corp represents the exact opposite.
- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6People can digg me down if you like, but until you can explain how someone would expect to make vasts enough amounts of money to get a complete return on their investment within a decade, you've proven nothing but the fact that you're capable of a Pavlovian reaction involving clicking a red thumbs down icon every time someone says something about something you're a fan of.
Bjweeks, you bring up a good point with that intangible benefit, but is it worth anywhere near $150m?
Even the blog that has the story doesn't show any real numbers about the money this site is making. It just shows visitors and time spent by the visitors and acknowledges that people are using ad blocking software. - Neilyos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4wow, I didn't even know this was proposed. wouldn't that be the just the most ironic thing of the year.
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2omg wtf lol
I blame it on those small laptop keyboards and dyslexia. - bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Someone's gone bury mad on these first few posts...
I can't understand why the parent was dugg down, and I can't understand why my post was dugg down?
It's a *comic* about this exact issue!
Threads really suck when good comments get dugg down.. save the burying for trolls - Ryaaan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4proof read?
- noddyxoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2DIGG rules ! don't sell out guys you are the best that happened to the internet in a long time ! you are priceless !
- amigiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@dustko
I agree totally, if this site falls into the hands of Murdoch I'll look elsewhere for news without hesitation. - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@chazzy,
That is the problem with Digg.
The benefits of Digg go more towards the site being linked then Digg itself! - Skab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is there some race going on to get stories out before others, or are digg users just losing the drive to do a spell check before submitting stories. #4 on the net but we can't spel YAY!
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This article is ***** *****
- rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But we are smart..
- Derfus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7digg is a cool site and all, but its not worth anywhere near 150 million. maybe 15 million.
even the rightwing nutjobs at newscorp know that - trenchcoat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Yeah because MySpace has been nothing but a neocon breeding ground. Sarcasm in case you couldn't tell.
- iZealot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@alfredn
Funny thing Jay or Kevin haven't come out and tried to debunk the rumors of the past days. Kevin would post on the digg blog or Jay would show up in the comments and tell it like it is. So one has to wonder what is going on here. I guess we must wait and see. - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has everyone forgotten that Digg only got $2.8M in VC money?
$150M would be about a 50 to 1 return!!!
Then again, Kevin and Jay kept majority ownership... I guess the VC guys feel left out? - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would wish for Digg to stay how they are. I like how it is with Kevin being who he is in this whole thing.
- mrgoat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3No
Do you know what irony means? - msturgill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are much crazier people on MySpace.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@digitalgopher
Exactly, he can't. I wanna hear it from the "big dawg" himself/themselves :O. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For a good laugh turn off your ad blocking. Apparently Google is confusing "dig" with "digg" and displaying tons of excavation ads!
- broder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2No, that's the appropriate comment for when Michael Palin is in talks to buy Digg.
- mr804, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3ENGRISH?!
- milarepa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I would cash out for 1/10th of that. Hell 1/100th. Go live in obscurity in costa rica or something I guess.
- peritonlogon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Since this comment section is now just on Digg.com, let me add my 2 cents.
Digg is really dropping the ball by not adding more servers. It has become quite slow, which would explain why users don't stay as long anymore. It's as if the people running it have reached their goal and decided not to upgrade. - xamox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Of all the rumors that are on the net please let this one be true. ***** Rupert Murdoch!
- mariusaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I will stop using digg if it is sold to another company.
- msturgill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you are a dick
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Most illiterate title ever.

With all the reading that you must do daily on the internet, it's a shocker that nobody knows grammar anymore. - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Alexa is actually quite good in that if someone is foolish enough to install the toolbar they will probably also no run ad-blocking software.
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Agreed, not only is the title wrong, but their are numerous grammatical mistakes in comments. It is hard to read a comment that has double and triple negatives as well as typos. Yikes.
- xeno439, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Digg's traffic is not flat. That is a flat lie. Anyone can see that it is and has been increasing.
Here's some proof.
http://alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=digg.com
Slow and steady increases are more powerful than ephemeral trends. - v1sor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thank frak that Murdoch didn't get his claws into Digg - I'd be forced back to /. for my tech news. :S
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Nice troll.

What is Digg?
