- stonecircle, on 06/11/2009, -22/+124I only joined Twitter this week, spurred because several of my Digg friends (and me) were banned last week temporarily from the site. My motivation was solely to be able to maintain contact with these folks if they (or I) were banned in the future. I have 239 Digg friends, but only 19 of them are following me on Twitter. None of them are my Facebook friends. I liked keeping Digg separate, using Digg for my political interests, and Facebook for my personal life and family. People from work are following me on Facebook, and I really don't like the idea of my politics making its way back to my boss. I've learned in the few short days I've been Twittering that I pretty much need to check the site continually throughout the day (difficult when you work full time and the boss monitors your on-line activity).
I am sorry to see the Shout feature go. - EnviroChem, on 05/22/2009, -6/+106It will be interesting to see how this changes things. I have mix feelings about the shout system. I liked that my friends could shout to me articles that they thought I might be interested in, but at the same time I do see how it is abused.
Recently one of my blog posts got over 100 diggs but only 50 page views as a result of Digg. If this is representative, it means many people are digging articles they are not reading. Another thing I'm sure we have all seen is the "I'll digg yours if you digg mine" shouts. My answer to this is something along the lines of: "I digg what I like, and I'm selective. If you shout me something and I like it I'll digg it, if not I won't. You should do the same." Usually what people want me to digg swap is crap and I'm not interested in digging. So maybe the new system will help reduce tit for tat digg swapping.
Granted, I tend to digg a lot of what I'm shouted, but this is because I'm selective with whom I befriend. I only befriend those who have a habit of digging and submitting stuff I am interested in. I also check their comment history to make sure they tend to comment in rational ways. This means my friends tend to shout stuff I'm interested in reading.
Anyways, if you have a Digg friend network you like to share stuff with I'd recommend getting on Twitter and starting to recreate your friend network there. My friends can find me at: http://twitter.com/EnviroChem
I hope the changes resolve many of the abuses we have seen with the shout system while still allowing us to share stuff we think our friends would be interested in. - greenfyre, on 05/20/2009, -18/+106OK, that's going to change things ...
- Maddoktor2, on 05/20/2009, -6/+81Twitter? You're kidding, right?
To all on my friends list:
Don't bother asking me to follow you on Twitter. I won't be joining it for any reason.
Sorry about that.
To all those that abused the shouts system and made this all possible:
You are the reason we can't have anything nice.
Thanks for ruining it for the rest of us.
Now, ***** off. - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -5/+76I joined twitter for a week, and it was ***** pointless. I canceled my account, and I'm not going back on that garbage site. How is a tweet any more real time than a shout? This is just ***** stupid. If it was real time, it would be an IRC channel or something, not a ***** flash in the pan second website. I shouldn't have to log in somewhere else to track my DIGG friends.
- atomheartmother, on 05/20/2009, -9/+77Seems all sides of the political spectrum are pretty much in agreement here. Bad move Digg. You listening?
- stonecircle, on 06/11/2009, -6/+70Necessity is the mother of invention. We can still follow friend's activity, which many of us already do. I will miss being able to share tidbits of information with folks, which happens through the Shout process, though. That ability made this whole process more "human", and we truly have developed friendships here because of that.
- Alheithinn, on 05/20/2009, -7/+66This is a backwards move. Makes no sense at all. Twitter is simply horrible. The only upside is my mailbox won't be full, but at least the full mailbox allowed communication. Facebook is bad enough, but Twitter? NO thanks.
- Coven, on 05/20/2009, -4/+55I'm not so worried about shouting my own stories as I am about sharing stories that I find interesting with my friends on digg. Yes I shout the stories I submit, but I submit so rarely that the vast majority of what I shout is pointing friends of mine to another person's submission.
- RandomEyes, on 05/20/2009, -3/+52People complain that shouts are used for power users to spam with. Well the top users on this site almost NEVER send out shouts. They built a following, and they are good at finding quality content. This will just hurt lesser users from getting their stories to the front page. If you don't like shouts..there is an option to not receive them, use it. Twitter is a decent way of sharing a Digg submission, but how long will someones Twitter 'shout' stay visible on someones Twitter stream?...5 maybe 10 minutes? Shouts were the one way to ensure you could always check out your friends' submissions that they thought were worth your time. And as for Facebook? I will never post my Facebook page to my Digg account. There is a huge difference between someone looking at content I Digg and submit, to someone seeing where I live, what I do for a living, who I do for a living, and what the last night out drinking I had looks like in a Facebook photo album. Rethink this decision. Thanks
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -11/+57So I pose a rhetorical question digg, is it more important that you appease a few whiney complainers who use the site once a week, or the faithful users who have worked like banshees to be on this site every goddamn day to provide content that the aggregate of digg enjoys??????
- Renian, on 05/20/2009, -4/+49DO NOT WANT
- tzvika613, on 05/20/2009, -7/+52This is a stupid move.
People should boycott Digg the day it goes into effect. - AgeofMastery, on 05/20/2009, -5/+48This won't stop the "Digg me and I'll digg you" blind digging. They'll just do it via Twitter, Yahoo, or whatever IM program they choose.
It also means now if I want to keep up with what my friends are posting I'll need to keep TweetDeck running and sucking up resources constantly. Just wonderful...
More and more I'm liking Digg less and less. - Alheithinn, on 05/20/2009, -3/+46Shouldn't have to go to another service to use the first service. This is adding another hoop for us to jump through. It's a terrible move and I agree with cattletracks.
- Pash1994, on 05/20/2009, -6/+49I don't understand why this hasn't reached the front page yet. It impacts everyone who actively uses DIGG. When they turn off shouts, users won't be able to interact within DIGG.
Better start collecting your friends Twitter names folks. The end is near. - punx, on 05/20/2009, -4/+45I'm glad to see that the people I have enjoyed arguing with, and the people on my friends list over the years are in agreement. Let's face it, yeah some people shouted to have stories buried. But most of us have used the shout system to create friendships and share things we were interested in.
What should happen here is that every faithful user of digg should revolt. No more digg. Let the whiners who are here once a week, or show up once a month support their site. We might as well just move on to Twitter, since it's what digg wants anyway. I take my hat off to all of you, Liberals and Conservatives alike. I have learned a lot from both sides, and you're all worthy friends and opponents.
This was a fine way to repay the people who have been on digg for years, and supported this site when it was a tech site, formed friendships on here, etc. Good job digg. Talking about pissing on people who pulled this site from obscurity. - stonecircle, on 06/11/2009, -6/+46Wow, suddenly the 4 pages of shouts in my box have taken on a whole new meaning. A shout has never been so sweet... Going to miss you, guys!
- ironhide, on 05/20/2009, -3/+41You want to blame someone Maddoktor2? Blame Digg for having a vague ToU and enforcing it sporadically and unevenly.
- redcolumbine, on 05/20/2009, -3/+40Twitter? Ugh. Worst possible choice, demographically.
- EnviroChem, on 05/22/2009, -0/+36It would have been nice to be able to categorize friends, but since I didn't have that ability, I just shouted everything to everyone on my list unless I was sending something to one specific individual. I wish I could categorize my tweet stream into multiple organized streams. It is becoming a jumble of confusion. :-(
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -1/+37Twitter BLOWS.
- atomheartmother, on 05/20/2009, -4/+39The sad thing is that for many of us, digg has been a way to test our positions, challenge those of others and keep up with news events that interest us- all at the same time. Regardless of our own ideologies, the common bond we all have is passion about the topics we discuss, the desire to be heard and a genuine interest in the world around us. I have more respect for those that I disagree with on digg than I do with people who may on some level may share my political opinions, but either don't care or don't care enough to stay informed. Bring up politics or world events in the lunchroom and most people look at you as if you have two heads. Bring up American Idol or the next concert coming to town and they'll gladly talk for hours.
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -1/+35GOD DAMMIT, Ironhide!
That's three times in less than a week that I've had to agree with you.
CUT IT OUT!!! - Bloodwine, on 05/20/2009, -4/+38If I may put on my tinfoilhat for a moment...
Maybe all the Twitter spam on Digg over the past few months was to soften us up (or browbeat us down) to where we were supposed to welcome some sort of weird Digg / Twitter / Facebook ***** of a merger.
Twitter and Digg, two whores nobody wants to buy. - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -5/+39This thread is a true testament that the liberals and conservatives that fight on digg incessently can come together because we love this place where we have found like-minded people to express ourselves with. If anything came of this bone-head mood this commonality between us being illustrated here was a positive.
- lostlyrics, on 05/20/2009, -10/+43I give a streamlined flying poop on facebook and twatter - heard my shout ??
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -2/+35Ditto Iron. The libtards and the repubtards are standing united on this one.
- Coven, on 05/20/2009, -0/+32c'mon MAP, that was so tongue in cheek even I tasted it!
- Coven, on 05/20/2009, -5/+37My twitter account is linked in my profile. Follow me and I'll reciprocate.
Digg is taking a step back here. - mycutepetpics, on 05/20/2009, -1/+33'I shouldn't have to log in somewhere else to track my DIGG friends."
100% agreed - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -6/+38Anyone else wondering why this hasn't gone popular yet????
- OsceneInTx, on 05/20/2009, -2/+33I would've have rather suggested that DIGG make the shout feature more enhanced, and give us the option of real-time chat exchanges ON the digg site...like how myspace and facebook have their IM client built in as a toolbar on the bottom of the screen - but moving us off digg? hmm. It only sounds like after our last banning debacle, they want to get rid of the responsibility of monitoring bury shouts and such. At any rate I will reserve judgment until I see what they come up with
- ironhide, on 05/20/2009, -2/+33Rbii, I just dugg up AHM and MAP. I feel the need of a shower.
Actually I do think that it's telling, that when it comes down to it, no one wants others voices to be silenced. Even if I'm digging you down or yelling at you, I would never take your right to speak away. - MindTrigger, on 05/20/2009, -3/+33Really? I never look at the shouts. I just come here for the articles and the ludicrous conversation in the comments :)
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -0/+30I think digg done screwed the pooch on this one. How do you eliminate the way in which people share like-minded articles? Yea there are other ways to access the articles, but this was the best way to network with friends on digg who like to digg the same content. It's ***** stupid, and it will come back to bite them in the ass.
- Maddoktor2, on 05/20/2009, -2/+32I understand and agree with what you're saying, ironhide.
Digg is indeed as much at fault as those who abused the system.
Doesn't change anything, though - I still won't be joining either Twitter or Facebook, and Digg is not a good enough reason.
I'll probably still be around here; I just won't be there. Ever.
The only good coming of this is that finally, "opposing sides" have a complaint in common.
That's something, I guess.
(f they want it to be really fair, they should eliminate powerusers as well - that way, everyone gets the same voice.) - Alheithinn, on 05/20/2009, -1/+31Agreed, cattletracks. It's a more desensitized and detached reality we are being exiled to.
- ironhide, on 05/20/2009, -1/+31I knew it was a mistake not putting a smiley in there MAP. There was no malice intended, I assure you. If you or AHM were offended, I offer sincere apologies.
Which leads me to commenting on another problem with debating online. Sarcasm and jibes don't come across well at all. - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -0/+29Yea I thought that was the whole point of digg, not to organize outside of the site to game this system, now this only encourages that. The ToU are now obsolete... If anything the people who are already organized (I am not one of them) will have a an unfair advantage over the ones who didn't think to work outside the shout system.
- AgeofMastery, on 05/20/2009, -1/+30I'm not sure why Digg didn't implement making multiple lists. Live Journal had it years ago.
- stonecircle, on 06/11/2009, -5/+34It will be interesting to see the reaction to this from those that were squealing like pigs about Shouts being unfair. Ironically, many of them abused the feature and projected that onto others. Kill communication and you kill The Beast. Thanks, guys (NOT).
- Maddoktor2, on 05/20/2009, -1/+30Of course not.
- Maddoktor2, on 05/20/2009, -0/+28The /s is very important.
- twiztidsinz, on 05/20/2009, -10/+38Ahhhh... sweet, sweet irony.
- FredFredrickson, on 05/20/2009, -0/+27As much as the mainstream media wants you to believe that Twitter is the best thing ever (it's a platform for free advertising for them, why wouldn't they say that?), there's still a *****-ton of people out there who do not want to use it, and will not use it. Stop acting like the whole world loves and uses Twitter, and we'll all get along much better, okay Digg?
- redcolumbine, on 05/20/2009, -1/+28It's geared to folks who either have nothing to say or no time to say it in, not people who are actually willing and able to READ the articles.
- AgeofMastery, on 05/20/2009, -6/+32Of course there won't be any way to enforce the TOS about shouting to bury stories either now.
- stonecircle, on 06/11/2009, -3/+29I live in town where the majority of people are the political opposite of me. I work for an organization that reflects the same demographic. When I visited Digg, I was able to form bonds with like-minded people, and it was not only refreshing but energizing. I'm am truly going to miss that, but even more I'll miss the real people I connected with on a daily basis that "get" me.
- AWBoy666, on 05/20/2009, -5/+31This isn't about making Digg any better.....it's about reducing administration costs. Digg has to spend a lot of time dealing with investigating shouts which might violate the TOS. This removes that cost.
It's always about the money. I, of course, don't have any problems with that, but let's be clear that that is what is happening here. -
