Wikipedia is just one example of a Wiki. - sam991, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Wait, what? How come it isn't a DIGG KILLER!!!1!one!
- crackedplastic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Ability to vote on source links is a definite benefit. No more blog spam. Wish it was implemented here on Digg.
- mvanhorn, on 10/11/2007, -6/+19I got invited to use the site.. I don't know how a crappy site like this gets written up in the NYTimes. This site is a joke, it's like a bad pligg webpage with the ability to edit submitted content titles and descriptions.
- falstaff, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Reads like a press release dressed up as "news."
Plus: "Thoof — a name he discovered by writing a program to search for Internet addresses that had not been taken (he said he also liked that it rhymed with truth)" I'm not going to be getting my hard news from somebody who things Thoof rhymes with Truth. - thefirelane, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Finally, I'll be able to read all those stories about the increase in Elephant population that the mainstream media seems to miss.
- simpleid, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11I really enjoy seeing people come up with more effective ways of feeding individuals information they are actually interested in. Getting people to interact in a productive manner for the same yet unique goal is fantastic. As for the name, eh, I don't think it rings or 'sticks' well, but hey, functionality > design: 'the bottom line.' I hope such a concept or one similar to it succeeds, I am exhausted at having to filter through so much information that is useless to me on Digg. Cruelly enough Digg happens to be the ideal central/organized source for new information at the moment, or at least one of them. But something like this should be a great piece of spice on the tower of information sources that will arise in the coming years.
The world and life is nothing but information, feed me, I am consuming it. :-)
And lets see some statistical analysis of the information, I like to know how my information evolves over time, along with other interesting abstract ideas that could be implemented for nothing else other than to satisfy curiosity... - xipotec, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7and poof there was thoof
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6He seems to be depending on the "wisdom of crowds" to produce correctness which is a logical fallacy. Popularity can never be used to support correctness.
- albiniak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7if a server goes THOOF in the woods and no one is around to hear it, did it really make a thoof?

Digg is not a totalitarian state. - san1ty, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4If you submit your email address at http://prelaunch.thoof.com/ you can expect to get an invite within a few hours. Also, once you have an invite, you can invite anyone else you like using the "send to friend" feature.
- Amentina202, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5And I'm a football for correct grammar.
Dugg down. - leontes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4err what about wikinews?
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Worst. Name. Ever. The first thing these guys need to do when the service leaves beta is change the name. Good Lord.
- Four20, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3thinks*
- wattznext, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2From the invite page:
"If you would like an invitation to participate in the beta, please provide your email address below. We won't spam you or share your email address with anyone that will.'
o...k...so who WILL they be sharing it with? - falstaff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I saw that too late. Firefox makes me lazy. No red lines = submit. Pro tip: Still have to proofread!
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Haha. Did this guy ever stop to think there was a REASON thoof.com was not registered yet?
- jmacdonagh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4These are the kinds of features I'd like to see Digg have. The ability to merge duplicate stories (and the unique diggs each story has), change the title, the link, and the description (all with normal democratic digg behavior).
- keyboardduder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Its a site designed for news as mush as it is advertisment. Its garbage if its going to advertise that much at you. They talk about how much the people running it will make money. Who cares? We just want a good information website without the snorg tees girl everywhere you look.
meh. - Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wait, is that a *wiki* element or a Wikipedia element? Because it sure sounds like the former... Wikipedia already has Wikinews anyway.
- Pic0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2HOOF? KATE'S HOOF?
- carl689, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1- nvm -
- wattznext, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Scott Adams said: "You can never underestimate the stupidity of the general public."
- Mininday, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Thoof Invites
http://tinyurl.com/33r2mh - IHaveIssues, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I can just imagine the trolling .....
- djtrypt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2yet another digg site, i think ill stick with the orginal
- undetected, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The problem with sticking to the stories that match your taste is that you rarely get opposed to the other points of view. It's the reason why people who only watch Fox News tend to believe Bush is the Best President Ever.
- HanSolo69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So, how about 'dem new Snorg Tees girls? huh? huh?
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1but editing wikinews to your taste isnt a good idea
- tehbored, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Holy *****! Two of the best sites ever combined into one? This I have to see.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2that's what slashdot said.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1troof somewhat sounds like truth
if you remove the th sound
like truf - escapist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't classify Thoof as a site that relies on "the wisdom of crowds". Digg relies on the wisdom of crowds, Thoof relies on one person's behavior.
Both sites employ a "system" to recommend content to an "audience".
Digg's system is a herd of users and it's audience is everyone.
Thoof's system is an algorithm examining a single user's behavior and it's audience is that user.
As far as the "wiki" type functionality, it's not easy to change content on Thoof. You need to propose a change and then have it vetted. Sure, people will try to game it. Hopefully, Thoof'll outsmart them. - apachedisco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2@lhnz
actually digg deleted topics all the time until this debacle
http://blog.digg.com/?p=74 - timo1023, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2This is cool, but people, in general, are stupid.
- darenotask, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0don't put your Thoof in it!
- popothebright, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Sort of like Newsvine?
- Sabretou, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4God, the only thing I hate about Web 2.0 services more than their cheesiness are their silly, meaningless names. Thoof?!
- phrenq, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0@elhaf, wattznext
I developed a site based on almost the same idea - http://www.elistic.com - it has a five-star rating system, like amazon, and it recommends sites based on other people who have ratings in common with you.
And I'm currently *right now* in the middle of adding the "people who liked this also liked ..." feature. Check it out if you're interested. I don't want to come across as spammy, but it seems relevant. - esantipapa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Isn't this just like newsvine?
- 4to15characters, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1this is kind of dumb, Digg already has the feature to look at what you're interested in...so it's nothing really new and amazing. As for the wiki element, how do I know the guy editing the story knows more than the submitter? I think it won't last.
- djdole, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2@sabretou
Did you rtfa?
They explain how they chose the name, and so touch on it's meaning.
(so not quite meaningless)
@sabretou
Digg would have less blogspam front page content if people would not Digg blog spam submissions. - elhaf, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Dammit! They stole my idea, and I only had it a couple of days ago. I was just thinking that there needed to be a site where you can find like-minded individuals and see what they digg too. Actually, that would be a good feature for Digg, to allow you to see others who digg similarly to you over time, and then see what else they digg that you don't.
- wattznext, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1@elhaf
That's not a bad idea. There could even be a section for "people who dugg this story also dugg..." like on amazon.com. If i had even an iota of programming skills I'd make one of those digg api thingys. Who's up to the challenge? - Smuikas, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Reminds me of Thufir Hawat...... namewise..
- mrmdc, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Meh.. I likes newsique.com better.. more credible news sources than random bloggers posting stuff.
- autopilotoff360, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0As Honorable members of the digg community, it is our duty to knock this site out with the 'digg effect'
- webcure, on 10/11/2007, -12/+6Thoof;
What a name, I will be interested to see it! -
