- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9alexia only ranks site of people who go there with the little alexia browser plugin.....i'm guessing most digg users are the type to not use such spyware (but i would've thought that of slashdot too)
i really don't understand the whole competition, its quite juvenile if you ask me. i'm glad to see the it growing, but get over the petty BS already - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11If Digg wants to be better than Slashdot it needs a better commenting system than it currently has. Slashdot's isn't great, but at least comments are generally either good or funny. On Digg 90% of the comments are useless.
If Digg had comments as good or better than Slashdot, it'd be a beter site. News is already here first, but unfortunately the comments don't usually provide much good additional information. - parth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I have a feeling that these results are a bit skewed. The Alexa Toolbar a Windows app that is considered spyware by most anti-spyware programs, so since many power users do not use Windows and the vast majority of those who do use anti-spyware products and thus wouldn't be tracked, these results are probably going to favor those sites that tend to get a lot of people with the spyware. It's a factor for sure, but I don't know how big of a difference it makes.
- aeio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6some random asian ip with an apache test page ranks #33. this rating system appears to need work.
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?q=&url=http://220.181.27.54 - catullus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4trafficked? why haven't the cops shut it down yet?
- Bananas21ca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Digg will be number one soon! If Digg isn't one of the most trafficked sites on the net it is surely the number one for causing bandwidth maxouts server crashes and more fun of teh nature."
I Highly doubt digg will surpass a major search engine in traffic. - kiranlightpaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good to see!
The reason I like Digg is the reason I used to like Slashdot: current news (mostly tech but branching into other areas as well) on the absolute bleeding edge. It used to be that news would be on /. a few days before the mainstream media would pick up on it. Now, Digg is generally where I turn to for it.
Now, if we could only get those threaded comments and fix that darn bug where you can't submit URLs that don't begin with certain phrases (*cough* CAN'T SUBMIT WWW2 *cough*) we'd be golden. :P - deathpasser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"but in order to top slashdot, and really gain mass popularity"-Curtis
I sure hope they don't do that, I like it how it is now with good ol' fashioned tech news rather than yet another website with an expionistic/monopolistic buisness model. - windwaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to Alexa.
- Carbito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think that you could ever consider Alexa statistics to be reliable.
- digid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those traffic stats go up and down all the time.... in fact in early december digg had "more" traffic than slashdot...here's the graph
http://traffic.alexa.com/graph?w=640&h=480&r=6m&y=t&u=digg.com/&u=slashdot.org
but who cares? - dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no digg. Alexa ratings are crap. It's just a subset of the internet that is smart enough to install the alexa toolbar... ie. webmasters and others.. digg is webmaster / tech heavy, and so, it and slashdot rank high.
- Soccer4786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google would probably be number 1, but because it has sites in different countries, UK which is number 10 for example, it's traffic is spread out.
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Now if Digg can just shed itself of the 13 year olds...
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Closing in on /. LOL!
First why do you care??
Second, Digg still only has 1/3 the traffic that /. does. That is hardly "closing in". - curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is the correct spelling and use of the word, check a dictionary if you don't believe it. No need to flame.
- LtJimDangle2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what's #1? Goog is #3
- deathpasser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya, I woulda dugg, but Alexa finds out their info through Spyware from what I heard, and seeing as how the audience of places like Digg/slashdot/fark don't tend to have the Alexa crap, its going to be relitively unrealistic.
- LtJimDangle2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yahoo #1 and msn #2 = lame
- curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Look at the graphs for a comparison between digg and slashdot or fark over more recently in growth, or the long-term! Very Interesting! Digg's rank is rising rapidly, but in order to top slashdot, and really gain mass popularity, digg must branch out into the broader spectrum of news, to accommodate its exponential increase in user/fan base! It also comes upon the users to do their part in the digging/promoting/burying stories, in order to bring digg back to its prime when it wasn't so widely popular!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Branching out is exactly what will *destroy* Digg. We don't need another Fark. Considering how messed up Slashdot is, we *do* need another Slashdot (aka: Digg). But if people keep using it to submit spam stories, whore their blog and talk about the latest sports scores, it won't be ***** because a lot of people like myself will give up and leave.
Also, I dont' buy anything Alexa shows. Alexa only shows what sites are most popular among people dumb enough to install the crappy Alexa stuff and be tracked MySpace-style. - Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll be impressed when the comments section isn't routinely full of meaningless crap. I love the rapidness of the stories, but the community itself, frankly, is like a junior high version of Slashdot. The site is doing a great job of getting people to come, but not much to get people to actually be a part of it. I'll bet you the percentage of traffic that includes user communication is virtually neglible compared to overall site activity. Give people an incentive to moderate -- that could help a lot.
- DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2WHat number is bangbus lol
- Refusedb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone notice that battybattybat is picking fights and confusing the ***** out of me...
- quokkapox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep in mind Slashdot started when the web was far less popular.
All that's needed now is a threaded moderated comment system and an interesting community will develop over time. - tamzarian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Woohoo! Go digg! I finally decided to register :)
- deathpasser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"both exist peacefully without all the mud slinging." -Silence
Utopia!
"Actually, I really was giving thompson too much crap, I mean he was the original digg poster for this story, after all." -batty
Sarcasm! - curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it is not based on bandwidth, it is based on number of page views and number of unique and registered users!
- Anticitizen1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, 30 above the bottom...talk about low on the totem pole, this isnt important news.
- shaft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/shaftinafrica/yadayadayada.jpg
- CrashKC, on 08/25/2008, -0/+0As Lowtax has said 100 times, we must kill the drama or this website will turn to *****. I blocked brattybatt or whatever it's name was.
- xDev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As soon as Digg reaches a 9/10 PR rank on Google then your in the same league as the big boys. It'll get there very fast, probably faster than any other site ever. But relying on the poor saps who have Alexa spyware installed is just juvenile; it's really embarrassing just having a conversation on it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As noted by others, Alexa data ain't that great as it is gathered through a toolbar ... but it is significant to be in the top-1000 ...
- pksynths, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HA if everyone that visited digg.com installed Alexa's damn spyware toolbar digg would #1. Their numbers are skewed beyond belief. Not to mention all the Alexa hit scripts out there that jack up your numbers.
Bull.
Get this off the frontpage. Don't want diggnation making fools of themselves.
-PK - shaft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0y is general failure reading my harddrive
- digikill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only ***** idiots that install the Alexa toolbar contribute to those stats. Is that really a category you want your site to be number one in?
From Google -
Pages that link to Slashdot: 210,000
Pages that link to Digg: 31,100
So yeah, watchout Slashdot.
This site is now worth leaving for the idiotic user base alone. - shaft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL ive been hackin gibsons all day long. Viva la ***** geek squad. Im gonna passout now.
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"MOS Scaling: Transistor Challenges for the 21st Century"
Wild guess, huh thompson!
Sahft, dude, you hacked a gibson! - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LAME
It's not an accurate survey. Only surveys people that use the Alexa toolbar.
Join me in LAMEing this off the front page. - *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quite a few UK pages or versions of pages are up there, interesting.
- Bistromaths, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, firstly this is only the english speaking pages, so not quite correct with what you say.
Secondly, the comment that Google would be number one if the localised version were conglomerated with the .com page, then it probably would be number 1 yes (in terms of reach per M users). Taking the all the Google search pages from the top 100 english speaking sites (.com, UK, Canada, Australia, India), then that comes to a reach of 286,095, compared to Yahoo's 285,700. And that's over a 3 month average. - cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can anyone here explain slashdot's daily pageviews going from 50million to 230million in December? Looks like digg overtook shlashdot beginning of December and then all of a sudden their pageviews quadrupled over the next days. Weird!
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?&range=6m&size=large&compare_sites=slashdot.org&y=p&url=www.digg.com/ - GreenSlabOfClay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Submitted a story to /. about digg moving to the front along time ago.
Of course, there is a small group that controls what get submitted.
That is why I digg instead of /. now, fairness.
I predict digg will far surpass /.
Hold on for the ride! - Shultzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg Rocks...
Interesting to see Digg and Engadget compared to each other over time... - sanket21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, I open digg page i c the latest happenings in the tech world.. i use my mouse only to click next...any type of categorising information ... (...) would be a bad idea ... for smone like me who hate using mouse ..
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0silence7, cm'on gimme a hug.
couldn't agree w/u more pksynths. this is disgraceful. (btw added you to my friends) - pksynths, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0meetu. 19"
- DWatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fark is still a bazillion times funnier that digg.
- soccerob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ummm.... of course digg is in the top 1000, i frequent it several times a day. i am constantly digging.
http://soccerob.com - CrashKC, on 08/25/2008, -0/+0I wonder why half of the top 100 most visited sites are ad companies/pop up spammers? Nobody visits fastclick by choice.

What is Digg?
