- jayadelson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+64Indeed, this is not the first time, and it won't be the last.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+63I know.... 700 fake accounts banned.... about another couple thousand created just today...
- unibomber999, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52It's a slippery slope. First it's the bury button, next you're living in communist Russia waiting in a bread line.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48wtf i was expecting to see names, email addresses, screenshots, something! This article is garbage without posted evidence of the "captured" offenders. I don't even see a link to this spikehtevote website in it.
- et_nyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44I've seen lots of comments in the past about how Digg and other "Web2.0" sites are simple little garage operations. They are usualy coupled with rhetorical questions like, "Why are there so many people working for these companies". I'm sure we only see the surface of all the malicious activity that occurs by the minute, intended to ruin the environment we all enjoy as diggers. Fighting this type of activity takes dedicated resources. Keep up the good work digg designers and developers!
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -6/+43Digg has the same problem as POP3 - it gives all users equal control and assumes good will. Digg was probably designed by engineers :) They're good people to a fault - they assume the best in us all.
- grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -22/+58This is S0 cool!!!
- rancemo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28You people take this site wayyyy to ***** seriously. Get a life!
- gardnmi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30I'm sure the scammers are shaking in their boots now.
- GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Wait, so the scammer sets up a site, then offers the site up for sale on ebay, then Digg supporters come along and buy the site in the ebay auction?
I fail to see how this deters such cheaters. Isn't this just inviting them to create more sites to scam the Digg system, offer them up for sale, and then have gullible Digg supporters give them money for it? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19You do realize that by purchasing the domain you're only awarding the spammers and encouraging them to continue making money through continuing the same behavior?
You should have just contacting the admin here to help them build future safeguards. What you just did, didn't really do anything. - EliW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18For all the proof that you need, please visit http://spikethevote.com/ at this point.
- phaed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18hopefully digg's new algorithm takes into account the amount of comments the person does and their mod up/down status on those comments before putting any weight to their vote for a new story so that these shell accounts stop affecting new stories on the front page.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16@undersky
Are you ***** serious? $200,000 a year? Are you incredibly retarded, or just delusioned? You must come from a rich family...
Seriously, I know people who'd do that for minimum wage. You could get away with paying them 20k a year easy. - br0ck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14They paid $1,275 and then only waited ten days to spill the beans. I think they should have kept the secret for a few months, giving Digg admins plenty of notice, and then nailed a whole bunch of people.
Here's the ebay sale of the domain: http://cgi.ebay.com/Spike-the-Vote-System-to-Game-Digg-spikethevote-com_W0QQitemZ200048890462QQihZ010QQ - trigon77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14SpiketheVote worked by assigning its users "missions", which were basically stories the user was to digg. They would earn credit for digging their missions, then they could redeem that credit for diggs on a story they submitted.
- williamhelmick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17In Soviet Russia, people get killed for making Soviet Russia jokes.
- tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"Now owned by digg.com thanks to Jim Messenger"
So did Digg reimburse Jim? If so, that's a very noble thing to do.
While they're at it, they should buy out these *****: http://www.usersubmitter.com/ - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13OK... So we know about them.
Now what? Wait for a week to pass so someone else can recognize the problem? - felis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Post other threads of interest to the populace, and they shall Digg them.
- shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16@Atomike
sorry, but no. regardless of maket share, many Mac users and PC users alike find Apple to be an interesting company, and there are a lot of articles written about their stuff. Why don't you just accept that, and stop whining. If you really can't deal with it, maybe you should see a therapist. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12HAHA and maybe digg was ultimately set up by scammers, who would then later sell their digg- scamming sites to innocent digg users, for a handsome profit.
And in the same vein, maybe all the viruses thhat attack Windows machines were developed by...you guessed it.MAC users -- who then make a tidy profit by selling anti-virus programs to all the Windows users
If you trust someone, you are either
a) in love with them, or
b) entirely too gullible.
Either way, you'll probably get screwed! ;-) - jcliff29, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Just shows what can happen when you make anonymous 13 year-old fan-boys "editors"
- PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Catching" your own fake accounts doesn't count.
- GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Doubtful. Apple, Wii, Ubuntu, and Libertarian wackenhuts are the first four of the Digg Ten Commandments.
- wrongway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Now if we could just defeat the manual spammers to digg. can you say PROFY?
- itzfritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7check google cache for spikethevote.com; it'll tell you exactly how it worked.
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14"what's wrong with bashing apple? macs do suck. i can bash them all i want. i'm not forcing anything on anybody so if you use a mac go ahead, i don't care, but as far as i care, macs suck."
I'm not saying macs suck or rule. I'm just wondering have you ever used one? - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It would be cool to see some official word from Digg on this.
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yay, a blacklist that can easily be hacked to include legit users. Fantastic.
- donjaime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So how much did their site sell for?
- MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@betterth
The cost of an employee is much higher than the salary you pay them. You have to account for the fact that your employer pays for half of your Social Security taxes, all of your mandatory worker's comp insurance, and contributes to the state unemployment fund. Plus they have to lease the computer you use, pay the people to clean the bathrooms you use, pay the HR people who provide you with HR-type services. Add on-top of that any employer-paid 401k contributions, vacation, and benefits. They also have to pay for sales guys who bring in the business and the advertising to keep you employed.
I really wish that more employees understood just how damn expensive they are. There are huge numbers of small business owners out there that make less than their employees! There are too many people out there who simply look at thier paystub every other week and think they're the most underappreciated person in the company. - RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Often the link they are digging is their own. These scammers get paid by Google Ads.
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What about http://www.usersubmitter.com/ ?
- kitchengeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Worse yet, you got caught for doing something with no reward. Think you're gonna get paid $5 for every X number of links you digg? Nope. They're scammers: you won't get paid. And then when Digg sees your voting pattern, you'll lose your account. Do it enough, and you may end up IP banned, too. You still won't have made any money, either.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"shut down a scheme that attempts to undermine the legitimacy of Digg’s voting system."
He used the word legitimacy and digg in the same sentence. That's a good one. - diafel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Yet webtech, webtickle, aaaz, mrbabyman, chrisek etc, all prolific gamers of digg, remain unbanned. Fascinating.
- OsiVert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@akira117
The problem is that not only can they use proxies to make them anonymous, many people have dynamic IP's, so it wouldn't really do anything. - jo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Welcome to Rigging The Voting System 101.
- kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow, so now you can earn a profit by setting up a Digg exploitation system. Great. Real great.
That's like bying all the coke from the smugglers so no one else can get it. Stupid. - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you can digg something up, why shouldn't you also have the option to bury it? It's like an anti-digg. There should be some way of saying, "Hey, this is stupid/a dupe/wrong," without just ignoring it.
- se7en11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"official word"? By this you mean two blogger accounts, right? I am still at digg.com right?
- miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the 'digg' bit is the novelty bit that probably keeps people enthusiastic, but i would prefer to order them different ways. for instance by most read or comments.
we should havve options. - hcetrepus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are people with the time and useless ability to do such stuff? Why?
Oh yeah, who got caught? - ChewyBass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31. Create web site
2. Spam Digg
3. Get bought by Digg or fans of the site
4. Profit
Don't think this is a way to scare people into not creating these spike or spam sites. This will only encourage it as they have profited from it. - SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What exactly was the offence? What were they doing? Spamming? In what way? The article didn't really clarify for me what the wrong doing was.
- Azewaldo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article doesn't tell much. I'm digging in the hopes that Kevin covers this on Diggnation.
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I recently got my account suspended cause they thought I was a part of some fraud involving digg. I know the baddies have to be caught but I think they might be a little over-zealous in their attempts to stop people from gaming digg.
- glock22ownr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"4. It’s just not cool. "
Well... I was going to scam Digg... but now that I know it's not cool... lame.. -
