- jayadelson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Did you see my leak of the new website? Cool things coming for Rev3... (check the forums...if they work... which is why we need a new website...haha)
- bvizzle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Jay for president!
- tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Pave the way, Digg! Set the standard and let the imitators lose!
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It has no financial model other than AdSense and the company Kevin mentioned on TWiT last week - and they are not making money.
- dandyhighwayman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Here is another interview with Jay from last month if you didn't catch it:
http://www.marilyncarolyn.com/2006/07/explosive-conversation-with-diggcoms.html - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Gee, let me guess: product reviews? That way we will have a bunch of kiddies rating products based on news they have heard about them because they don't own them.
- Talphin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Not on their looks... On their "performance". :P
- mgoddard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I met Jay at a TechTV meetup here in Toronto last year. Great guy to sit and talk to. I'm glad Revision 3 is in good hands!
- Talphin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Strip club websites need a Digg feature for their girls... yup.
- jayadelson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well that isn't very nice.
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't block ads, but I find the ads on Digg very poorly targeted. Infact, I find most of the ads on google's content network fairly off topic, but it seems hardly any peak my interest on digg.
Take this page for example:
VOIP x 4
WebEx (people on digg probably already know about it, and use it or a competitor in their office)
hoover.com - business news - uhh, isn't that what digg is for? :)
Chip- - lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He could be refering to open source development collaboration:
Submit a bug.
Vote up bugs you find important.
Suggest fixes for a bug.
Vote on best fixes for a bug.
Or an actual conference that you attend by going to the website:
Submit discussion topics and speeches.
Vote up interesting or important submissions.
Hold peer discussion about the individual submissions.
Moderate the peer discussion.
I am sure there are more, but those are two that I can think of off hand. - joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cool to see Venture Voice featured.
I've been listening to their podcast for months now and they are one of the the most interesting business-related podcasts I've heard. - mercuryswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ridiculous.
- cwilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm happy to see that there was a bit of news about Rev3! I love the shows they have and I wish there would be more (or at least frequent releases of the shows they already have).
On a recent TWIT, Prager said he had some news to announce in the next few weeks. More new shows? - Metasquares, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Arch77:
That's a good idea, but is unfortunately incredibly easy to abuse. - thomasthecat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've recently thought that Digg would make a good model for a social networking site. Digg someone's profile (for any particular reason), digg an interest they have, allow them to see that you've dugg them or not...would be easy to break the ice.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So proud of being a smarmy, thieving jackass.
- demodenise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The biggest flaw of all user-generated content models is that content quality depends entirely upon the caliber of users and their willingness to interact with the system and each other. If you don't have a high level of involvement from a large population of *diverse* users, your content is skewed.
Just wagering a guess, I'd say that the good old "80/20" rule applies to Digg at the moment. (80 percent of its content comes from 20 percent [or fewer] of its users.) I'd also bet that the user base of Digg is very-heavily tech slanted. This means that, at the moment, what's making the top of the lists is stuff that this 20 percent sees as interesting, relevant, humorous, informative, etc.
The only way to see more of what any single user considers news on the site is for that user to start submitting more stories. And recruiting more users to digg his/her stories and post their own.
- sonycam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"He started Equinix, a company that now has a market capitalization of $1.5 billion. Despite its success, Jay didn’t make much money because he held his shares until after the dot com bust."
/suicide - Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -3/+5so when is digg going public
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You mean like.... the VIdeo sections on digg? It would *kill* digg financially to try to host videos, not to mention trying to shoulder in between youtube and google video.
I think... Digg Porn! - aleandro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4pretty nice dude. It looks like he knows what he is doing.
- Arch77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Product reviews is an obvious expansion. What other content could the digg model be applied to? I was thinking of a next Google of sorts, where all web content receives "diggs" and search results are presented in order of the number of diggs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+13It generates money because we aren't all ignorant little ***** like you who don't appreciate the priviledge of using digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dude, if this site depends on google adsense then i by know means have a problem with clicking on an add or two on a daily bases to help support these guys.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're not allowed to mention digg being supported by ads, the hypocriticunts who think it's some sort of 'free' site that will magically always be around and doesn't need money for the dozen or more people that make it happen, the cost of serving the site etc. get angsty and mod you down.
- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ricockulous?
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Smartest thing I think he said is that he could stand to live a humbler lifestyle and moved to rural new york, not spending all the money you don't really have. Biggest mistake all the .coms did was blow all their nonexistent earnings on fancy chairs, parties, celebrity executives and stupid marketing. Oh and throw in a couple of sports cars. Being smart with the cash means digg can last a long time and build a real business.
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have to say wow to the fact he has kids in college and looks like he's 30. I'd have imagined being a player in the middle of the dot bomb would have had more negative effects on him.
Side note:
"Never got the sports car or Ferrari"
Haha, I know a couple Italians crying right now that Ferrari is no longer considered a sports car. - carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4hotornot.com?
- coutub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not hosting, the same model digg uses now:
Somebody else is hosting the content, digg lets you know if its worth your time to go visit/download/experience that content
and then you get to form a micro-community about that content and discuss it.
Those are the two parts that make Digg unique.
The content in the middle, that is limitless and is restricted only by the micro-communities needed to discover and discuss/experience it. - Mambo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love how the link @ the bottom of the story goes to revision3.com instead of revision3.org
- cwilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gah! Couldn't edit in time!
Perhaps we'll get some new schedules for exisiting shows. inDigital anyone? I know I'm dying for new episodes of that! - tutivlahos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, what is a Ferrari then?
- untzboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@derek:
That giv me an idea............user rankings would be a nice little tweak. - mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that didn't stop Rupert Murdoch from buying MySpace
- Route246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jay's contributions to the Internet are not well understood. As the founder (along with Al Avery) and chief architect, evangelist and father of Equinix, the Internet is a better place for all of us because of Jay. Equinix is the gold standard for Internet hosting, peering and physical security. Every Internet presence that matters is there. It's a virtual monopoly from that standpoint.
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There already are user rankings. They are updated daily based on you user stats (mainly stories submitted that have hit front page and how many people have viewed your profile).
Click on your "Profile + History" link on the top left of the page, then click on the "Profile + Settings" tab. Your overall ranking will be on the right side. - gd007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1do you need to make money when you have million eyeballs?
- fluffyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"@Arch77:
That's a good idea, but is unfortunately incredibly easy to abuse."
Someone listen to this man. There are already networks of people who do nothing but digg what they are told, they aren't even automated accounts either. Not to mention the strong bias of a site will heavily slant reviews. You can bet there will be a lot of glowing A++++++++++++ 100% reviews on apple products if it was done here. - gd007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why don't they have donate via paypal button? i will donate $5.00.
- tehpoutine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Could they PLEASE give "Digg self serving BS" its own topic so I can ignore it?
- wizard1218, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Digg is already not strictly news... it's also cool links, photos, videos, etc... it will be interesting to see what else is planned, though I agree product reviews would not be a great idea.
- mahavishnu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg can be applied to just about any subject area. One example would be – having it act as an aggregator of let’s say, just blog posts, limited to a defined subject area, where they are filtered to the top by community participation through diggs.
It would be like having an intelligent RSS feeder server. This way, depending on the topic you want to read about, you can find the most popular latest and greatest posted information just going to digg.com - demodenise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rankings based on what criteria? if it wasn't carefully executed, all it would be is a popularity contest.
- demodenise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Oh comon, you dont even have to think to guess this correctly.
VIDEOS.
As in, Youtube.com meets digg.com
That's why he's hinting at, guys. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"CEO" lol
I think he should pick a better title, like 'Supreme Commander'. That would be cool. - suomi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"Digg as a concept can be applied to other content aside from news"
The lack of news may actually point up what an awful lot of others are saying - namely that the concept is flawed and requires a few major tweaks if it is ever to live up to its 'social utopia' claims. -
