- Sharky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think it only takes about 10 reports to get the story off. I really don't think Kevin Rose has the time or money to hire silent moderators. The Diggs disappear because people click that "problem?" button.
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5One word. "Karma"
If enough people don't like the story and rate it so, then it gets automatically removed. Simple as that. - tearinox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Less moderation, if a popular story is inappropriate, then maybe give it a "explicit" tag warning users.
- svloco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It takes 10 reports, periods. no matter how popular the story is. So that story with 2000 diggs, +10 reports is auto hidden.
Now this was fine when digg had 100 users, but with 10k + users, and people with different views obviously 10 people report ratio can be easily obtained. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2where do people get this number 10?
oh and i like how this has been taken off the front page - tearinox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2everyone please email them.
feedback@digg.com
and tell them to fix this issue. - johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i imagine this is just a temporary moderation solution until they get the "burying" feature working. some things posted on digg are inappropriate and some have even been illegal, or dubious at best (like posting someone's phone number... where is the proof it wasn't the number of some totally innocent person?)
- tearinox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2watch.. this one will "vanish" too. heh
- teckjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was also wondering about this after the "http://digg.com/apple/The_Apple_Ad_Slamming_Windows_95_for_copying_the_Mac_Trash_Can" digg disappeared.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"One word. "Karma"

But what about that story with almost 1,500 diggs? I doubt that nearly that many people would have marked it as a bad story.
As for the legitimacy of the phone call story, if you read the comments you can see that multiple people claim to have called the guy and he has given some updates throughout the day. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah this has been buried, probably as will any other posts related to this issue too.
The only way to get enough people to see this is to get these posts going all the time even when the lamers are voting lame on it trashing it before many could see it and understand that there is a problem and what it is to even come to want to e-mail about it. I do hope enough eventually do e-mail so they can implement an immediate solution.

just did it to this post too. - osuguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know, I submitted a story a whole ago.. had over 30 in 3 hours, others had 20-25 and got front page after being out for 6-7 hours! They are obviously not standard with posts across the board. What's really the fun in posting if you don't have a shot at the front page.
- Sharky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If enough people click that report button it disappears from the main page. Pay attention.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unless the Digg code gets more mature very fast, Digg is going to fall on its own sword. This doesn't have anything to do (I think) malevolence from the creators. I think this is just some strange behavior of the code. Part of it is that a (evidentially) a few people can report a story as "lame" or "old" and get it removed. I, too, have noticed this behavior at times on various stories.
Since there appears to be no connection between the stories that get demoted, I think that this is just strange behavior of the code, not silent moderation. Nonetheless, this needs to be fixed. /. makes no pretense at being fair and unbiased. Digg is supposed to be user driven. Strange "features" of the code take away from this. It needs to be fixed quickly. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, this does need to be fixed. I will send my email in like the rest of the people who care about the system and like this website.
- Broadway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2w00t! digg's filtering system is proven effective by removing this ***** article from the front page!
- Broadway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is the evidence that the magic number is 10? I'm willing to bet that there is an algorithim, seeing how quickly those "kevin rose is gay" posts get nuked, even at 3am, not to mention how few front page stories go away.
- mattmacg4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've noticed a lot of the submissions that I keep track of suddenly disappear - like the article said - you can't even search for them.
Here's one of them: http://digg.com/links/MSN_homepage_now_ripping_off..._yahoo_
-It had 230 diggs in a couple hours and it was suddenly pulled. Now we've all seen the stories with 25-30 diggs over the course of 12 hours get on the homepage. What gives?? It's pissing me off. Maybe the creators should explain how the process works. Is there a standard at all? - mrtom852, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"But what about that story with almost 1,500 diggs? I doubt that nearly that many people would have marked it as a bad story."
I thought that was a pretty lame story - not enough to mark it as so but I can see how some would. If it only takes a fraction of people to go against the general feeling though maybe something needs tweaking. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, that's what they're doing - the next top story (something about Google Maps and a satellite) just disappeared.
1 - kind of a ***** up thing to do.
2 - will definitely get the point across - but the users reporting may end up banned (what with the new TOS and all).
I've sent e-mails to Digg, and I suggest everybody else do the same - if there are civil ways of going about doing something, then that is the way to go. Malicious tactics should be a last resort. - lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There’s no evidence of what this person is saying. People probably reported both stories cited. No reason to be paranoid.
- antispammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Two of my stories that had to do with removing ads were buried. They were buried to death inside the digg submission page before they could even get anywhere. My guess is that the "invisible hand" doesn't want me to post links about removing ads since this site gets revenue from the google ads at the top.
- bigred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this one disappeared from the front page.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, if instead everybody posts comments on a story that's been reported and therefore will probably never end up being seen on Digg's backend, everybody send these suggestions (ratios for reports, list the number of reports, etc.) to feedback@digg.com ( http://digg.com/contact ) - it's also a good idea to report spammers and troll accounts to abuse@digg.com - a flooded inbox is more eye-catching than just another reported story on their logs.
- breakfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The story is offically off the main page.... was it the overlords??? or was it a faulty equation??? we may never know
- f1gm3nt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you report a story you can't report it again.
- p5ych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1with digg's growing user base, the number of times reported needed for a story to be removed should be adjusted accordingly because there are more and more people that mark everything they see as "lame"
- theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah if it's reported a couple times it disappears from the front page. I don't believe anyone's moderating us.
- Broadway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1front page stories need to be of a higher quality than those in the lower areas. If it breaks on the front page, and immediately a bunch of people don't like it, it probably shouldn't be there.

email away. - DownloadThis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+"OK, This is lame"
Perhaps Digg should display the number of people who reported problems with stories, so that everyone else can stop bitching when it disappears from the front page. - Broadway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just gave this an "OK this is lame," as I imagine many others that understand digg will. There is no "silenr moderation," it just means a bunch of people don't like a story.
- ochants76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if the stories that with the most diggs are on the front page it would be the same stories all the time.....i think it might be the stories that get a lot of diggs in a short period of time and if they stop getting dug then they leave the front page....just a thought
im sure there is a reason for this....they aren't just being jerks and taking ppls stories off for fun. - antijesse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I suppose it could be the /. effect.
If a handful of people time out and report a problem, that could do it, couldn't it? - p5ych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it should show the number of times reported net to the number of diggs. also have a seperate section where the removed stories are put instead of making them invisible
- gbm85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"like a story bashing Sony. Post that and all the Sony fanboys will report it lame."
Right... you must not have been here when the rootkit thing came up because there would be an anti-Sony story on the front page at least three times a day.
And you guys who are saying the "magic number" is 10... what evidence do you have? Any at all? - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1UH OH, it's Digg's secret GESTAPO NAZI POLICE!! :O
But seriously, it's probably just the "report post" button and number of clicks on the story. - gbm85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nobody knows exactly how many reports it takes. They have been very careful not to make the exact number public because it would lead to people intentionally reporting it exactly that number of times. It may be a static number, it may be a percentage. We don't know. I'm getting sick of all you stupid conspiracy theorists who don't understand that the democratic system works both ways--it can make you popular, and then after more people see the story, you aren't popular anymore. Why don't you grow up and accept the fact that you submitted ***** that people thought was lame and *that* is the reason why the stories were removed?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And now this post has been removed...
- f1gm3nt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Problem with most Digg users is that they are retarded and just like the power that they have. Most love to report submissions just because it's a story that they don't agree with like a story bashing Sony. Post that and all the Sony fanboys will report it lame. I don't think it's a problem with Kevin and his crew but the Digg fanboys that are ass holes.
- zodiacal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+010 is way to low. it should be a ratio!
- osuguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gone.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that it should take half as many reports as there are diggs to remove a story. I think (though I'm not sure) the number of Diggs it takes to hit the front page is some magic ratio of the number of Diggers online at the time. The magic ratio I guess does a relatively good job of representing the overall opinion of a story at any given time - so (and yes, I picked 1/2 as a completely arbitrary number) 1/2 the number of Diggs is far more representative of how many people think a story is lame than TEN.
Then again, at certain times, stories hit the front page with maybe 20 diggs...
Man, digg's moderation system could use an overhaul. - zodiacal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this ones gone from the home page now... wtf
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think we need answers!
- captngimpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and it gone
- ochants76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0omit the "that"^^^
- drummerman109, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok, they need to really change the # for removing stories, it needs to be a % of the # of diggs. like 10%. so a 1500 digg story would need 150 reports before it gets removed
- tempest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I reported it as lame, lets see if we can get enough to make it go poof!
