- pintocat, on 10/07/2009, -1/+29If they want it off the site, they can find it and report it. Why should Youtube be responsible for filing DMCA requests to itself?
- couragewolf, on 10/06/2009, -6/+27Of course they know - people only go to youtube to watch TV shows, music vids and other copyrighted stuff. Exactly zero people want to watch videos about your ***** cats and other *****. Youtube of course knows this and therefore will always allow copyrighted stuff.
- jdh24, on 10/07/2009, -2/+14aw poor rich people getting all butthurt someone dared to put their ***** on youtube for more people to see. who the ***** goes to cbs.com to watch *****?
- 12916studios, on 10/07/2009, -1/+10All I use YouTube for nowadays is to look up songs I've heard in various places so that I can know whether I should buy them. And you know what? Most of the time I do.
But if you want to strip YouTube of all its copyrighted content and therefore lose my business, by all means, go ahead. I'll just start torrenting even more than I already do. That's okay with you, right? - RedShoulder, on 10/07/2009, -2/+11CNET.com owned by CBS owned by Viacom... Oh the irony!
- k3rfuffl3, on 10/06/2009, -1/+9Of course they know about, but it's cheaper (and more practical) to get sued than develop a technology which will screen out every piece of copyrighted material ever as it's uploaded.
- argagarg, on 10/07/2009, -1/+7I went to the comment page to say the exact same thing, and you beat me to it.
Still, ***** VIACOM. - Travelsonic, on 10/07/2009, -0/+6Everything is copyrighted unless otherwise stated/set by the creator.
- Idonteven, on 10/06/2009, -0/+6And this is news how? I could probably find a dozen movies in under three minutes on youtube without even trying. It was obvious that some things were left intentionally .
- eviscerator, on 10/07/2009, -0/+6I don't know about other people but other people's cats are among the things I like to see on youtube...and videos of unknown/upcoming bands etc., so don't speak on behalf of all of us :)
- DiggUnderground, on 10/06/2009, -0/+5I don't know how they could have ignored it....

Since CNET is essentially owned by Viacom, the journalism in this piece can't exactly be considered unbiased. - loststar1087, on 10/07/2009, -1/+3OMMMG people who work for youtube want people to enjoy videos without the constraints of copyright? stfulawlsconglomocorp
- CK20XX, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2I hate all these anal copyright holders. Why does it never occur to them that removing their content from circulation is bad? If Youtube becomes Theirtube, there will be no more reason to go there.
- Remelox, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2That's not irony. Particularly since no one expects journalism to be unbiased.
- Genma, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2whether or not anyone at youtube knowingly left content up really has nothing to do with anything. there's no way they can review each and every file that goes up, nor would it make any sense to demand that they try. this is already covered in the notification clause of dmca, viacom's real motive here is to break it so websites can't use this for protection anymore, and shift the responsibility of discovery over to them. never gonna happen, no matter how many ways they try to spin it.
- noangelcame, on 10/07/2009, -1/+2I believe it's not that they allow it. It's that they can't stop it. You've got millions of people uploading videos through an automated system. How big could the team be that reviews that content, I doubt it's over 50 people,. probably a lot less? Lots of bad stuff probably gets through,. and they probably only deal with the stuff they've received serious legal threats about, because there's just not a lot of resources to go around and catch everybody.
I notice they remove SNL videos quickly,. but a lot of stuff made by people who don't complain as much is still up there. - Atario, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1I would, if it weren't delayed a week and didn't force you to watch ads.
- riverstyx, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Oh sure, because we all know youtube has such great quality videos that obviously represent a loss or a "violation to the owners" right?
I miss Stage6. - kanojo1969, on 10/08/2009, -0/+1Odd... I actually *only* use youtube to watch amateur videos. Mostly speeches/presentations given by people about economics or physics or other interesting topics.
Funny cats, dogs, monkeys would be the next category.
I don't think I've ever watched a single professional video on youtube. TV, Movies, music videos... there's better ways to find good-quality version of those. I can't handle watching youtube, the quality is terrible, especially the audio.
However, my wife is Japanese, and it seems that practically every hour of Japanese TV is uploaded by Japanese citizens every day, so she watches copyrighted video on youtube a lot. They never seem to get taken down, I'm not even sure if the IP owners bother to check it. - Verble, on 10/07/2009, -2/+3I don't think that word means what you think it means.
- gazzigger, on 10/07/2009, -1/+1Haven't heard anyone use "butthurt" in a while, any military experience for you?
- lawlzelotz, on 10/07/2009, -1/+1I welcome our future Skynet overlords.
