- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15pfft, they could have at least given her a better camera, that looks like one of those ebay wireless deeleys
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Bionic implants are just the first step towards a great new world. But you don't have to take my word for it!
-Gordi la Forge - apache2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10but..... can it run linux?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10We are borg. We will add your technological and cultural distinctiveness to our own. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated
- sublimethinker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I for one welcome our new robo-chick overlords.
- wallish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Any reference to Reading Rainbow gets +diggs from me. Well done sir, well done.

- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Cool, another sense we don't have to worry about losing!
- ocbeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6LOL, Digg is funny, I don't see why those people got modded down for posting URL's to similar stories.
I am beginning to change my mind about this pure democracy thing. - pinnette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually thats not completely correct. In the series Geordi had the visor and that actually did just show him some sort of outlines. Depending on the episode he could sense some other things but it was mostly light outlines and there was an episode late in the series where his mother has died and we actually get to look thru his visor and see what he sees. He does later get some sort of artificial eyes that allow him to "see" but that is in a movie and even then it apparently was not equivalent to eyes. I say this b/c his optic nerves actually temporarily healed in Insurrection and he made it clear that having "real" eyes and seeing the sunset was an all new experience for him. Feel free to call me a dork at this point, but these do seem to function in a similar yet primitive way to Geordi's visor. And yeah, just give it a couple hundred years, of course none of us will be around to "see" that.
- harley999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Seven of nine you will be missed!
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6On star trek they have devices that allow people to 'see'. This is just flashes of light of nearby objects and an incomprehensible outline. It's cute and all, but it's not sight.
- disgruntled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh you can copy/paste! Im so proud.
why dont you go write a tutorial of your experience entitled "how to play journalist"
go pimp your ugly assed blog elsewhere - silfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wow, never knew that could be done in Portugal.
I gotta gain more faith in my country - jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Give it 10-15 years and she will see better then people with eyes
- TwwIX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now she can jack into The Matrix.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3truely amazing and a perfect example of what science can do for us. give it 20 years and we might have something that can rival real eyes. that is if they are allowed to work on it and not hampered by peoples religous views.
- EricAnderton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Life imitates art... digg++ for larger-than-life cyberpunk implications.
Did anyone else see the pic of in the article and immediately think "Bateau"?

- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Now we just need a device that teaches women how to drive.
- XxN3RDC0R3xX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A picture of how the world looks from the person's point of view would be cool.
- ptknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The "collective" Dobelle Medical Institute in Portugal is close to my house and I had no idea they were doing this kind of stuff in there
Ok, enough of Borg jokes - Crowforge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I want one, I'm not blind I want to enhance my vision with that thing as a third eye™ I bet I could tweek it better than some doctor, nightvision selftracking auto blaster here I come...
- DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Thanks, for some reason they didn't show up under the seach for dupes section, but those others are blog posts, this is a direct link.
- jesusfreak216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2geordy laforge!!!!
first warp drive then this!!!! - tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know about the rest of you, but I was thinking: "WOW! This is amazing! This lady could technically have multiple eyes, or we could literally start having eyes in the back of our heads. That'd be awesome! Obviously this technology isn't very advanced yet since you can only see light splotches, but as it advances and they can REALLY see things...I'm tempted to get implants myself for the back and sides of my head!! Boo ya!
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3She's the Borg Queen! Ahhhhhhhhhh!
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We can look forward to --a device that sends music directly into the brain...the new 'mind-pod.'
...Stores over a quadrillion songs, more if you are willing to forget everything else you know.
P-flop pop? - DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7There was another one likes this last year, but the tech have been improved.
http://digg.com/science/Artificial_cornea_lets_woman_blind_20_years_see - aegreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg--not just because this is a local article for me (News 14)--but this gets you imagining what things will be like in, say, 50 years. Very cool.
- pinkfireball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4reminds me of daredevil
- user, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is great!
Reminds me of that segment from Scientific American Frontiers a while back. You can watch it online:
http://www.pbs.org/saf/1509/segments/1509-2.htm - apache2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't wait until they perfect this technology, imagine the posibilities of virtual reality. Imagine running a computer in your brain, and if you want to see whats in front of you, plug in a webcam :D
- Hyperion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'd thumbsdown that last comment you made, but you're absolutely correct. It gets very annoying not having the ability to delete your own comments withing the allotted editable time.
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2get with the times!!!!
trust me theres newer stages tahn this - us3ecandme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I stumbled across this about 3 or 4 years ago but it was so much bigger then. It was called the Dobelle eye. The picture they showed was of a man on a subway pulling a tall filing cabinet on wheels. Great to see it's gotten smaller.
- absurdist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"but this device allows her to see, not with her eyes but with her brain!"
Which would differ from the rest of us how? The eye is but one sensory input device. All seeing... for that matter, all perception, comes form the brain.
Call me pedantic, but your eyes don't "see" any more than your ears "hear." - CJHtxGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol exactly what I was thinking too...be funny as hell to model those glasses after his visor, and sad in a way... cool stuff though.
- Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wasn't that supposed to say legally blonde?
- pils01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Borg...ish
- meijerpb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More information about this vision technology can be
found at http://www.seeingwithsound.com/etumble.htm
Any updates about the status of the Dobelle brain
implant and the experiences of recipients in 2006? - namit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Will they be putting xray on it also?
- account, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another step towards Darth Vader.
- gbeirne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"More than a million people in the United States are legally blind."
I think it's about time we cracked down on those that are illegally blind. - jacks0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How cool is that. Personally I'd prefer a camera inside my eye-ball socket that moves around from the impulses of my muscles in there.
- charmedguy18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amazing. But still, if only they could see fully...
- stumpadoodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ya rly!
- NoSalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL ... I was just thinking the very same thing.
