- arnar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13" is a common symbol for inches
- bfirsh, on 02/13/2009, -0/+9... and ' for feet.
- hafe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I think same thing could be said about your comment.... apart from enjoyable that is.
Nice pictures. - fliped, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9These birds are almost the size of a penny.... never knew hummingbirds were really that small
- EternalDarkWing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Wow. The end picture sealed the deal.
- eN1X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's the sound their wings make when flapping so damn fast. I have a ton of them living and breeding in my backyard for some reason and when you go out there and sit on a chair, you can always hear them hum as they fly by.
- browwiw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Mmm...naturally bite-size.
- warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Why why why why why must religion be drug into everything?
Keep they religion to thyself
-George Carlin - SoccerBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And these "tiny little buggers" can flap their wings dam near 100 times per second... nature truly is a remarkable thing.
- redog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you put out enough feeders you will eventually get birds fighting over each. Sitting under a patio like this you will hear them hum by from time to time. Its great, mom has had feeders almost all my life and whle 'her birds' aren't as tiny as the ones in theses photos I have seen several nests. I managed to catch one once, brought it to class for 'show & tell'. Little bugger was anxious to leave by the end of that day.

Anyone else think that looks like a scrotum? I sure damn hope so, for my own sake - humanerror, on 04/03/2008, -3/+4They call them hummingbirds, but you never hear them hum.
- carlosglz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was going to say the same thing...
- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Nigel gave me a drawing that said 18 inches. Now, whether or not he knows the difference between feet and inches is not my problem. I do what I'm told."
"But you're not as confused as him are you. I mean, it's not your job to be as confused as Nigel." - thiagoleite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1:D
- djdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was like reading a children's book.
Cool Stuff though. - Luanialus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those particular type of hummingbirds are that small, when my wife and I went to Costa Rica they had something like 50 different species and one of them was literally as big as small squirrel or chipmunk or something. Not a "small" hummingbird, a small bird for sure though, but they were pretty large and definitely easy to notice.
- warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Very cool but I'll never find a pre-plumage baby bird anything but hideous.
- Stri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I like!
Its like having david attenborough on Digg :) - teeagesee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DUDE! What stuff are you smoking?!?
- Steeple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1god, nature, whatever, take a bow!
- MasT3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woooooow never knew about their size, thats amazing!
- akimbo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Then you going to get digg downed for being such an immoral bastard, whether the bird was a pigeon, crow or that defenseless hummingbird.
What did it ever do to you? - doctapeppa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Is it me or does that nest look like it's made out of fresh marijuana buds?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Some friends of mine have developed a pre-mixed nectar if you want to start feeding them easily. You will certainly hear them hum if you feed them! http://www.scenic-valley.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The symbol " when used as it is there, means inches. 3/4" is three quarters of an inch.
- thiagoleite, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4God and religion are two separate things
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I shot a hummingbird with a pellet gun last summer. It was sitting on a telephone wire and I thought it was a small sparrow, shot right in the throat. It fell backwards and hung on the wire for a good 3 seconds then fell to the ground. When I went over and saw it was a hummingbird I felt bad. Some would say a bird is a bird but there is a difference in my mind between say a pigeon or crow and a hummingbird or eagle for example.
- Seanpr123, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Too many amazing things in in this world to not agree with that statement
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Next...Next...Next...Next...Next...Next...
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7OMG PONIES!!!!!
- thiagoleite, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7God is awesome
- Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Oh! I didn't see those things. Those things always get me. (Thanks. I'll have to watch out for stuff like that next time...)
- AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1They kinda looked like dinosaurs in some pictures, which is kinda ironic :) .
- gandre, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Yes! It's a penny!
- Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -18/+1"For a size comparison: A toothpick is 2½" long, a penny is ¾" in diameter."
A toothpick is two and a half... erm... inches long? A penny is three-fourths of a(n)...?... in diameter. The pictures make sense, but the text is terribly unclear.
(Great pictures! I love hummingbirds.) - Zaelar, on 10/12/2007, -24/+2Nothing special, but still enjoyable.
